AC888 Diverting

Sat Feb 18, 2017 5:07 am

Just saw on FlightRadar24 that AC888 YOW-LHR has hooked a massive U-Turn. AirCanada.com and FlightRadar24 both still show the flight terminating at LHR however. Anybody know what's up?

Aircanada.com shows it diverting to YYZ. To redepart after 1:36 hr ground time. Doesn't say why, but it can't be too much of an emergency going that far back. I could guess some communications failure preventing the ocean crossing. But that's just a wild-ass guess. Swapping equipment makes sense at YYZ since there wouldn't be a spare 767 out there in Newfoundland. But another kind of mechanical failure or medical emergency would have put it down at the closest available point.
Worked for WestAir, Apollo Airways, Desert Pacific, Western, AirCal and American Airlines (Retired). Flight Memory: 181 airports, 92 airlines, 78 a/c types, 403 routes, 58 countries (by air), 6 continents. 1,119,414 passenger miles.

Just curious, what's the difference between a (regular) U-Turn, and a "massive" U-Turn . . . ?

Ah that famous aviation expression, the "massive U-Turn". One hopes the tyres escaped damage in such a trying manouvre.....

Why divert to YYZ instead of back to YOW?

YOW trips are flown on a W pattern as the 767's are based at YYZ. Depending on what's wrong with the aircraft, YYZ is going to be way better equipped to deal with it, or tailswap. There could also be crew duty day issues necessitating a crew swap.

All in all, makes way more sense to go to YYZ.

Everything has an answer. It may not be right, but there is always an answer! :-{)}}}
