Storm Doris hits UK

Thu Feb 23, 2017 12:00 pm

Sitting in my office across from MAN and I've seen a couple of scary go around so far and some brave souls taking off. Winds are gusting up to 60kts (it really is horrible outside)

Any other airports being impacted? I believe Liverpool is getting it worse.

EK17 - A380 has been holding for about 45 minutes now
VIR837P - B747 diverted to LGW earlier, now holding again together with EK17
QTR4N - B788 holding together with t he above 3

I'm assuming all 3 will likely divert to LGW

I'm just north of MAN and there's both a Ryanair and Easyjet flight holding over my workplace, it is bad! Noticed EK17 holding on FR24.

Is it not the same weather down at LGW right now?

A LH and an EI just landed. EK17 is going for it, going to go watch it.

It hit Ireland early hours of this morning. Was kept up all night. It was certainly a very strong storm. Over 50,000 lost electricity here and debris on roads even over turned lorries etc... Some structural damage to buildings.

DUB is a mess at the moment as you can imagine. Delays and cancellations. Baggage could not be off loaded and people waiting a few hours in reclaim. Passengers stuck on aircraft on the tarmac for a few hours with the most extreme being ET 500 which was re fuelling ADD-DUB-IAD and spent over 4 hours on tarmac.

Northern Ireland also got badly hit.

The VS 747 also aborted is landing. Next up are FR and EZY. Seems that conditions have not improved much yet.

It's heading for the hold by the looks of things over where I am, with yet another Easyjet flight. Cloud ceiling is pretty low so don't think i'll catch a glimpse.

Saw EK17 from our roof top, that was pretty drastic. You can't even walk outside with how strong the winds are.

At Amsterdam the situation is bad as well. EK147 diverting to FRA after trying to land twice. Some more go-arounds with winds expecting to increase.

AMS and possibly HAM likely to be affected later on today too. Sure it's windy down here in the south too but LGW is at 32knts straight down the runway heading not such a problem.

I count +10 aircraft holding for MAN. I feel bad for those on BEE2EF on that Q400. That will be a ride to remember.

Looks like we got off lightly at GLA then. A light dusting of snow on cars and calm as you like.

I wonder how much longer EK17 can hold. According to FR24 average flight time om DXB-MAN is 7h 23min, and so far today's flight has been in the air for 8h 48min.

Maybe that's why they've decided to divert. I'm not an expert but can't see them having more than 3 hours worth of fuel for holding?

The Virgin 744 is still in holding so no doubt they don't have any fuel constraints having already diverted once.

Meanwhile @ AMS/EHAM TK1961 SAW-AMS had a 2nd go-around. Let's see if she files for a third try :)

The BA Source web site is reporting that by 08:30 this morning BA had cancelled 31 of its scheduled short-haul rotations out of LHR today. I guess that this exceedingly high number is down to Doris.

It is actually higher . Around 10-11am I heard they had 59-60 cancellations and yes down to Doris. Although a LHR-FCO was cancelled and a PSA re timed by 4 hours due to Italians being on strike.

Pretty good to video, thanks for sharing. It was pretty pretty drastic to see, the sound was amazing!

Winds have calmed down a bit in MAN and it stopped raining. I'm sure all the diversions will be trying to make their way back now.

Weather wise it seems a tad worse - they're talking 100mph winds further up the Mersey, but just a handful of cancellations to and from the IOM and a couple of diversions as of lunch.

I don't live that far away and it's a bit breezy. Loads of fences and roof tiles down, including the fence and gate down the side of my house. The upside is it was a botch job my father in law did and I've been wanting to replace it for years, but knew it would cause an argument with my missus. On the downside I flew in to Manchester yesterday from a dry-ish country and am consequently halfway through a day long hangover, and can't face fixing it. Still, could have been flying in today.
Down with that sort of thing!
