airBaltic to launch Riga - Abu Dhabi service

The CS300 will allow airBaltic to launch Riga - Abu Dhabi later this year.

Latvian carrier airBaltic will launch non-stop flights from Riga to Abu Dhabi, starting on October 29, 2017.

The route will be served four times a week with airBaltic’s 145-seat Bombardier CS300 aircraft, and it will be codeshared with Etihad Airways.

“We are delighted to link Latvia and the UAE with our brand-new Bombardier CS300 that fly longer distances and reach airports that we were not able to serve with our fleet before,” Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer of airBaltic said in a statement.

According to the schedule it will be non stop in both directions so therefore I should imagine that the CS300 does have the range to fly from Riga to Abu Dhabi nonstop in each direction.

Once airlines realise the added value of it's range the CS300 could be a real game changer.

The CEO states it's a route 'which we were not able to serve with our fleet before'

Completely incorrect as they flew the 757 which is more than capable of getting to Abu Dhabi. I hate it when they say these things for marketing purposes!

According to some data, the 737-500 (which they currently run) can actually make it at a push too, anyone think it could?

It is not incorrect. While they had the 757 in their fleet, the type was retired a few years ago. Maybe the idea of RIX-AUH came after the 757 already was retired, hence the statement by the CEO.

Yes and he says 'fleet before' - I interpret that as they 'could have flown there when they had the 757'. Tut tut!. Infact they could get there with a DC3 if that had a tech stop but I'll let him off on that one.

you have to consider they could not serve it before because the 757 was to big for the route. if they cannot fill close to 200 seats but can fill 130 that would mean they could not serve the route before.
