KLM's Second flight to LAX

Sun Feb 26, 2017 3:44 pm

KLM has in the past operated a second flight to LAX for 4-5 days a week in the summers.
I just noticed KLM is starting this second flight to LAX this year on March 26. It will be 5 days a week.
Usually the flight starts in the summer but is it the first time they are starting this so early in the year? I have never seen this flight in March in the recent past. Both flights will be operated by the 747s (both in the full pax and mixed configs).

wow, that is quite a pax count a day. 800plus.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

I only looked at the March schedule. Did not go as far as the summer.

My flight is on a Saturday in July. Looks like on other days, the 747 is twice daily. I get the 777. Sigh!

Per http://www.routesonline.com/news/38/air ... f-11oct16/

Amsterdam – Los Angeles 13 weekly flights will operate for entire summer 2017 season (previously reported). Boeing 777-200ER will begin operating this route, replacing 747-400COMBI/-400PAX on KL603/604 Day 136 service, from 05JUN17

As the 747, both full-pax as combi, is being phased out of the KLM fleet, the number of destinations serviced by the 747 will be slowly reduced, with the longer routes getting the 777 or 787 earlier. S17 saw the 747 disappear from NRT; ICN and SFO were reduced. Currently, LAX and HKG are the longest two remaining 747 routes in the KLM fleet, both running combi's. For full-pax flights, the 77W is the airplane of choice for the longer routes.

KL has over the years been slowly extending the season and added more frequencies on the 2nd AMS-LAX flight. I believe this is the first time they are starting it so early. I hope it will do well for them, but LAX will see quite a few more flights to Europe this summer, OS to VIE, LO to WAW, VS adding 3x daily LHR and so on. Quite a lot of new capacity with many carriers going after the same type of markets.

Plus so much capacity out of SFO being added too including UA's recently announced MUC flight. And Norwegian's OAK/LAX additions

KLM has (for its network) been growing relatively quickly to/from California in recent years.

In S16 KLM operated both KL601/2 and KL603/4 AMS-LAX-AMS daily in peak summer for the first time.
The airline will again operated both flights daily in S17 and is extending the season to March -October, so a significant increase.

In S16 AMS-SFO was increased from 7x to 9x weekly and this will again increase from 9x to 10x weekly in S17, also for the entire March-October season.

So yes, California will see more of KL this summer.

Predictions are that both routes may be see further growth again after 2020, once the slot limitations on AMS are raised to a higher maximum.
So a 3rd DL frequency LAX-AMS is not impossible, but give it a few years.

Eventually, will KL operate LAX with a 77W year round for their daily flight, and for the second flight during peak periods, will they utilize another 77E/77W or a 789? I was hoping we would see KL/AF purchase or lease a small number of 747-8 for their flights requiring more capacity than the 77W can handle. AF has said the A380 is too large for the majority of the routes they use it on, hence the 747-8 would be a much better fit for both AF & KL.

Save for the fact that they, like nearly every other airline, seem to want nothing to do with that model. ;)

You weren't hoping that seriously any time in the last 5 years were you?

The amount of extra passenger revenue on a 748 vs a 77W does not warrant the extra headache of the extra type. Playing around with additional frequencies and the plane size is much more efficient for an airline like KL if they want to carry a few extra passengers. Just remember that quite a few flights to LAX are/were with the 744 Combi, which in passenger count is the 2nd smallest airliner KL has. (I am ignoring the additional freight capacities of the Combi here, as going forward that option will not exist on any type).

I will miss the Sky-blue 747s too, but they have had their time in the sun.
