Which Chinese carriers had Soviet aircraft?

Thu Mar 02, 2017 5:29 pm

After CAAC went who all operated Antonov, Yak, Ilyushin and Tupolev as well as types from eastern Europe? were they gained from CAAC or their own purchases and leases from outside? I do know China Xinjiang had IL86 and Tu154 probablly Sichuan Airlines had Yak42

On the breakup of CAAC, the ones I know of:

YaK-42: China General

IL-62 - all retired/sold prior?

IL-86: China Xinjiang

Tu-154: China Xinjiang, China Northwest, China Southwest, Sichuan Airlines, (Air) Great Wall (Airlines), others?

IL-76: China United

Does seem like a waste. According to Planespotters it is stored, or at least showing in the Historic listings of the fleet.

I still remembering flying Xinjiang's Il-86s. Still was a kid back then. Think we boarded through the cargo hold? Very unique experience. :weightlifter:

Those went to Xi'an Yanliang Airfield, operated by Xi'an Aircraft Corporation as an aerial refueling testbed, together with the Russian Il-78. I think the Y-20 prototype(s) is(are) also there. Not sure if the Tu-204 is still flying tho.

To some extent. The Tu-154s are now flown by the Air Force, some as transport, others as ELINT aircraft. I don't believe China United has any Soviet/Russian planes now.
However, any planes with registration B-4xxx are operated for the Air Force/Government. I believe China United has a couple A319s registered like this. They often do touch-and-go training out of Beijing Xijiao Airport.
