American to need visas to EU?

Fri Mar 03, 2017 10:49 pm

If if happens, which I doubt, it would not bode well for TATL operators.

But given the atmosphere in the White House, anything is possible...

Euro lawmakers press EU to impose visas on U.S. citizens

Sat Mar 04, 2017 4:05 am

This is in reaction to the USA's failure to waive visas for 5 EU countries over the last 3yrs (i.e. pay attention before any reflexive blaming of the current Administration).

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 09406.html

Apparently, this will be enacted within 2mo, if nothing changes. :(

Seems strange. Would this not have the effect of killing US travel to the EU for the summer? That's a crap load of tourism dollars. The EU seems to be cutting off its own nose.

What a stupid idea. What business does the EU have telling the USA which countries it should require visas for? Trump will probably react by slapping a visa requirement on the whole of the EU.

None!

But if the US requires citizens of some EU countries to get visas to enter the United States, isn't it expected that the EU will react in this way? In other words if your going to make our citizens get visas for the US then why should you be able to travel here without doing the same.

We just might find out what it's like to be on the outside of the tent after a lifetime of being inside. It's easy for us to travel the world, smaller jurisdiction yields to someone more powerful. Maybe withdraw our troops from Europe, e.g. Germany and see what happens. I'd say countries like Poland specifically didn't speak up in part because we also protect them and guarantee their independence. If Brussels wants to that going forward, let 'em.

IIRC we had a discussion somewhere on this board a couple days ago how US restrictions hurt tourism stateside with various opinions on whether tourism dollars matter as much for industrialized countries like the US as they do for many developing countries. It is not unprecedented the failure of reaching reciprocity results in Americans needing visas, this was a common issue we had with South America just a couple years ago, and notwithstanding special events reciprocity is alive and well in places like Russia or the communist-occupied portions of China while the non-occupied portion remains visa free for example.

As it stands, the EU will probably come to an agreement with the US, if South America was able to do it, so can they.

ROTFL. ESTA already functions as a visa of sorts for EU citizens who travel under the visa waiver program.

What business do we have telling the EU that we want all their passenger data in advance plus ESTA? Even if we continue visa free, they could easily come up with an ESTA for their own for US citizens.

@ua900 - ypou don't have troops in Germany, they are gone Long ago. What you have are 2 airbases plus an army airfield whoich serve US global policing purposes. Some troops have just been located into the Baltics and Poland, which is one of the countries the US requires Visas. Germany assists BTW, providing bases and troops as well. All in line with NATO.
I am against VISA requirements for US travellers, but an ESTA similar procedure would be OK. After all, we want to know as well who is coming to visit us.

Following a notification of non-reciprocity on 12 April 2014, the Commission should have acted before 12 April 2016 but it has yet to take any legal measure.

I don't believe EU would reintroduce visa requirements for US citizens, as it surely would lead to US reintroducing visa requirements for EU citizens.

Actually, this is EU retaliation for 3yrs of the US not living up to what it supposedly agreed to do.

Just a couple of points: this relates to an agreement in place between the US and Europe that the US has failed to enact in full, hence the requirement for the EU to consider lifting visa free travel for US citizens was built into the legislation for this when it was agreed - i.e. the US has not delivered on an agreement and not the EU (which has), it is not some regressive anti-US step. Secondly the vote is non-binding in the way the EU works. I am sure it will be resolved.

How does this effect non Schengen countries like the UK and Ireland? Does the EU have the ability to make US citizens visiting these countries get a visa?
