OAG Changes 3/5/2017: AA Drops LGAYYZ,3M out of Cuba?,DL Adds DTWSNA, UA Cuts Flights

FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

A route AA has flown for decades, and AA can't manage a few CR7s per day. Pathetic.

This is also a must to keep corporate contracts in NYC, quite surprised that YYZ is gone but YUL still has LGA.

Yep. AA needs to get its act together in NYC - no YYZ, single-class RJs to competitive business markets like CLE and RDU, etc. So much potential - wasted. Pathetic.

AC and WS/DL have greater advantages with AC hub at YYZ and Canadian point of sale, and DL with more slots in LGA and more NY FFs for the LGA business traffic taking flights operated by WS. There is likely no path for AA to stimulate traffic on to its' flights on that route. AA can re-purpose the slots for something else.

I'm wondering how this MAN operation is going to work out for VS/DL. Fares are fairly low in coach especially with MT on both routes (the most underrated deal to Europe btw) but it does appear the low J fare buckets are sold out for the start.

A DL 757 would have been perfect for BOS with daily or worst case 4 weekly.

Yeah, that is surprising. I wonder if they somehow misfiled it or it's some sort of negotiating ploy. I guess it's more likely they just gave up.

To me Silver exiting Cuba is the big news.

We also got our answer on UA. They just trimmed the hell out of everything else. No capacity increase, as I suspected.

I don't understand the MAN operation either. The big problem with the VX LHR operation is that it doesn't have any real connection ability. MAN is just the same in spades. I wonder if it is operated for political reasons or something similar.

I think it was a JV experiment and/or playing defense against MT or possibly DY/D8.

VS/DL do take feed from BE in MAN but MT gets it on both ends - B6 in BOS and BE/LH/SK in MAN. Even though going from E to A sucks I'm surprised WS isn't feeding MT in BOS since they they take BOS-YYZ/YHZ feed for sister company DE's Canadian Ops.

Looks like it is flown on E145's and the fares are under $150 (sometimes only $110), so with no F class to prop up the route, those fares probably don't make it very profitable, if at all.

I'm not sure why that would be such big news. Given what we've seen more broadly with the scheduled service between the U.S. and Cuba, some of Silver's flying to smaller markets seemed even more implausible than it did when they applied (and some of it seemed pretty implausible even then) and Silver's SAABs don't seem particularly competitive up against the larger jets competitors are flying in some of the larger markets.

It looks like UA also upgauged and started later banks. SFO-HNL lost a frequency but will run 3 77G. In upstate New York, ROC is going 3x mainline to ORD which is a nice boost. BUF will send an RJ to both EWR and ORD after 8PM which is unusual. These are just a few small examples but I'm sure they extend elsewhere. Those late banks that US ran in the summer seem to be creeping over to UA with Kirby.

251MY is still in FLL awaiting all final litigations, and releases from the insurance company for she is scrapped.

Here is the JFK-GEO schedule update for 2D:

Dear passengers,

Due to winter schedule optimization, we had to make some schedule changes
on our flights between New York (JFK) and Georgetown (GEO) from January 16th until February 28th, 2017.

Passengers traveling on Mondays will be moved on our flights on Tuesdays
and passengers traveling on Fridays and Sundays will be moved on our flights on Saturdays
only in January and February, 2017.

This announcement and schedule change concerns both of our flights
between New York and Georgetown, 2D401 and 2D402.

We sincerely apologize for any inconveniences this schedule change might have caused.

For more details and information, please check our schedule or contact us via
email [email protected] and our Call Centers +1(336)790-8176.

Thank you for your understanding, patience and continued support.

Sincerely,
Dynamic International Airways

There have been some DoT delay requests from Silver -- I haven't kept track closely enough to know if they have requested to delay or seasonally suspend every route they were awarded, and of course I can only find one this morning. But it appears they are not throwing in the towel on Cuba at this point.

I'd guess there are a bunch of new summer changes coming. They announced a handful of new routes at the end of January mostly starting 4/21 (around an 80 day lead) and there's nothing on the horizon after 5/22. That's really unusual for them, and with red-eye and less-than-daily frequencies they can don't need much capacity to launch of flock of routes. Considering they only announced the 4/22 routes with about an 80 day lead, it would not be out of character for them to not have quite announce summer additions quite yet.

This was actually AA's first international route; AA has flown it since 1941.

It seems strange that AA would go from five frequencies a day to zero, rather than reducing it to 2x or 3x day.

Commavia, what's the likelihood that this is a misfile, because the flight is switching from one AA Eagle operator to another, rather than a true market exit?

I'm thinking accidental misfile. It would be ludicrous to:
A)go from 5x to 0 without trying a reduced frequency
B) exit it super slowly. Look how they do 1-2x a week for three months. That seems odd.
C) end a 75-year-old route between the two most important corporate markets in their respective countries.
None of this makes sense. I'm betting they are switching Eagle operators or aircraft types and it got messed up.

That the route is not showing up as zero in subsequent months is a big clue in support of this idea. You'd expect a true pullout to be 0.0 in August, September and October, not 0.1, 0.2, 0.1.

We've seen something similar (but not as severe) in other markets including DCA-BDL which was much discussed. A route which routinely has flown around 7x (reduced to 4x on Saturday) was reduced to something like 3x on weekdays, nothing on Saturday and 1x on Sunday if you looked about 5 months out. The cuts were not legitimate and when the schedule was firmed up 90-120-ish days out the traditional frequencies were back.

Maddening that AA sometimes has this happen, and because some leisure travels books several months out they will miss out on some traffic if LGA-YYZ is not cut. If LGA-YYZ is staying hopefully they fix this quickly...and ideally this is a sign that this is being upgraded from E145 to something a little better.

Complete misfile IMO. I am an YX for AA Eagle/AA Shuttle Flight Attendant based out of LGA and I can tell you YYZ is not going anywhere. That is one route they will not be dropping. AA does face stiff competition from AC, DL/WestJet on the YYZ market out of LGA but it is one of those markets that they will continue to serve.

The first initial Eagle carrier swap took place this last month with all YYZ legs operated on 50 seater RJs being switched over to MQ and away from Trans States and Air Wisconsin. That remains that way for the time being. I could see AA perhaps going from 4x daily to 3x daily and bringing back YX 175 on the last leg of the day. Making it 2x E145 1x E175.

If AA is indeed dropping YYZ from LGA (which would be a shocker) then they must have some BIG plans for those remaining slots. We've been hearing rumblings of new markets out of LGA on the E175. Just like they said AA would NEVER put E175 on AA Shuttle and we've been doing AA shuttle right along mainline 190's and 319's since November.

A DL 757 would have been perfect for BOS with daily or worst case 4 weekly.

I think fares are high on BOS-MAN. Economy is around 1300 one way and first class is about 5 grand. This is compared to $1500 to LHR and $300 to LGW. Most people are willing to pay the premium to go to LHR (business) but i doubt that exists for MAN. This is begging B6 to enter

Add me to the chorus above that immediately thought "misfile" when I opened the thread. While AA certainly does not appear strong on this route (I am constantly shocked they can't even support RJs with F cabins on this route), AA has shown that it is important to them to serve key business markets from LGA. As an example, see the return of service to LGA-ATL, a route that DL obviously dominates.

In my experience, by the time this thread is posted, the correlating changes are loaded into the AA schedule on AA.com. Checking November, I still see 5X Envoy E145 in November on AA.com, so I'm pretty certain this is a misfile.

I've ran a bunch of searches and the first week is around 1300 (late March/ early April) and there's nothing coming close to $900 after that. I did a 3-6 day search of BOS-MAN nonstop on VS using Google's ITA Matrix engine. MAN originating is a bit higher a couple of $1000 fares but also has lows of $444 in June! Who needs DY/D8 when you have these fares. If you are a very flexible traveler (i.e willing to eat a night in MAN to save some serious cash) and want to do a Europe trip this summer you are insane if you do not consider these BOS-MAN flights.

That's weird because Google is showing me $1322 every Wednesday and Saturday April-September. The VS website is also showing me $1322. What dates are you seeing anything less than a grand?

edit: Condor is way cheaper. VS is $1322 but Condor is about $260. It looks like Condor is using a leased A330 that was made for the RAF. Never seen that before!

Yeah, that is surprising. I wonder if they somehow misfiled it or it's some sort of negotiating ploy. I guess it's more likely they just gave up.

All of the AA adjustments in this thread are reflected on AA.com's booking engine right now. Except for YYZ, which is still showing 5 daily nonstops. This looks like a filing error.

With regards to AA LGA-YYZ, YYZ's main runway, 23/05 is undergoing construction this summer forcing closure for extended periods of time. As a result, Airlines are being asked to consolidate flights wherever possible to reduce frequency while they are capacity limited. This could be a result of that, where AA is shifting these flights to a larger type with either mainline or another subcontractor. Furthermore, YYZ as of the past year or so has experienced a lot of US carrier flights switch to mainline equipment, as YYZ is over capacity at certain points during the day, adding frequencies is no longer an easy option to meat growing demand, hence upguages. This could also be an explanation.

Summer wide has decent fares on VS website. Are you doing roundtrips or one-ways?

YYZ still has two parallels 6/24 on the south side of the field.

No need to cut flights drastically. Lots of excess capacity at that airport.

I will also go with a misfile on this one. This is a very old route that I myself have flown many times. No way they would exit the market imo. Especially since they have no better use for LGA slots.

The southern parallels are too close together for simultaneous movements, and 24L/06R requires crossing a runway to get there. There is no excess capacity at YYZ, it is operating over capacity during large portions of the day. Essentially, unless they get their 60 arrivals an hour form using the three parallels, things get delayed. This is straight from the mouth of controllers/airport administrators who are friends.

Furthermore, even if the arrival flow is running smoothly, gate space is a serious issue. There is a dire need for T1 pier G to be built, but funding is insufficient at the moment.

So to finish off, no, there is actually no excess capacity at YYZ. There is a lack of capacity.

Not directly. There is a lot more at play.

Entire bank structures at United hubs are being recrafted.

IAH for example will go from 10 to 8 banks, ORD will go from a very defined East-West flow to include 4 omni-banks, and EWR will get additional banking.

Net result is that some markets will get less frequency while others increase. Big work in progress over next year or so...

I enjoy the OAG threads as much as anybody, but misfilings and related errors are fairly commonplace and even though they're corrected fairly quickly, they're discussed to death on here until the next weekly installment.

AA is not ending LGA/YYZ -- the flights are clearly for sale through the end of schedule, and changes on AA's website generally preceed what's captured by these threads.
We don’t care what your next flight is.

I checked AA.com and the flights still appear for August which indicates it's a misfile, BUT only full coach is available for sale. The lowest price is $2432 RT. So, that's broken. That means either they are cancelling it and have basically closed all the inventory, OR it's just screwed up.

that is awesome!! about time UA mainline comes back here on that route. Would be nice to see AA step up with a mainline flight to DFW, then all 3 legacy carriers would have mainline (DL runs 717's to ATL)

Where did these SNA slots come from? Mid-year allocation, or did I miss a reduction in service from other flights? I assume that the Slot reallocation has been complete.

Southwest.

DL is also adding SNA-LAS which starts in April.

It'll probably change to a 319, which is arguably more comfortable anyway.

The 73G are the rarest birds in DL's fleet; DTW has never had regularly scheduled service nor are there any scheduled into SNA. As it stands, no flights bridge the 73G to DTW.

Going through the IAH schedule reductions, for the most part, this has a great deal to do with the reduction of ERJ 145 flying. Were seeing more ERJ 175 flying at lower frequency in mid-sized markets. That makes the most sense to me.

They have one runway for arrivals and one for departures. They have 456000 operations per year with unrestricted airspace around them.

By comparison, JFK has a similar amount of operations with 12 million more pax per year (more widebodies) and a horrendous airspace situation and they routinely operate with parallel operations. As a matter of fact, they have a runway closed for the next 3 months forcing a 2 runway parallel operation.

Will YYZ be a breeze during construction? No. Not a horrific situation though.

AA.com is showing for mid June 5 RT's on Trans States @$224. Mid October it's 5 RT's on Envoy for $274. Looks like a misfile.

I have noticed this. I wonder whether it has anything to do with how much competition is on this route. Since DL has been on it for a year now, on LAX-DEN, there's not just UA+AA+DL, but there's also still WN, F9, and NK. Then again, maybe the 1x frequency on the 777 HD offsets the slightly reduced frequency...
