OAG Changes 3/12/2017:3M to Exit Cuba in 3 Weeks; F9 Pushes HAV; AA Drops DFWMEI, Adds DFWGEG; UA Cuts CME

FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

And Cuba is now gone in 3 weeks.

This is a pattern change that difficult to write out but results in PIB and MEI each going from 2 DFW flights to 1 DFW flight and 1 ORD flight. It's probably a net positive for the Mississippi cities.

Doesn't VX still have the NEOs announced in late 2015 coming this year? If so, it should be about 7 frames by the time these routes start. Maybe they can cover this schedule without cuts.

I believe AS announced they were trying to avoid taking all but a couple of those. Regardless, I'm sure they don't all arrive at the end of peak season when airlines typically drop routes. HINT...HINT.

Interesting. This is the first time B6 will fly 2x from FLL to RDU/RIC. Good way to open up more connection opportunities.

FLL-NAS jumped from 3x to 5x as a reaction to WN entering the market. 4x should be sufficiently competitive to WN's 1x

F9 already flies MIAHAV so if it's being dropped a ton of airlines are going to chase that frequency.

Cuba continues to rival the HND hype/bust situation.

I do agree though alot of airlines will probably want mia-hav so they can drop their longer flights but only for that reason. F9 is really number crunching these days must be really bad for them to bail so quick not even fly in summer.

Odd, in last week's OAG thread, UA expanded ORD service including going 1.9 to 3 on ORD-MHT in Jun. This week, UA takes that away and actually reduces Jun service down to 1.2 (down from the original 1.9). July is still at 3. A low priority Jun add? Lacking equipment? Consolidating to a larger aircraft?

Also very strange to see UA cut PVD during peak season and in the middle of a growth push at ORD.

Love these threads!! Thanks for doing them every week!

PVD-ORD still shows 2x daily in June on united.com and in fact now shows both as E170's. Maybe a filing error?

It looks like Virgin will take at least 5 NEO's, and DAL isn't going anywhere...

It was only a bust in the beginning, because the DOT chose suboptimal gateways, JFK and DTW. Additionally, the Japanese market suffered immensely because of the Tōhoku earthquake few months after the flights started.

According to the AS website (as linked to the USAToday travel section) all of these flights will be flown with "320 family" aircraft.

Didn't realize they were actually flying it. Then I'm guessing it is going to be a seasonal suspension. The same kind of seasonal suspension they did in all those stations that are still waiting for the season to resume from 3 years ago. ;)

Thanks. As for the frequency changes, it could just be multiple people are working on the schedule and they are over-writing each other's work. Not very professional, but things like that happen.

Those are all their Cuba routes. So it appears they are leaving. Thy had cut the routes in the Fall a week or two ago, so it is unlikely to be a filing error.

Not exactly! The DOT could have gone with UA at SFO, CO at GUM, AA at LAX and with either DL or a second daily HA at HNL. Even DL at SEA would have worked if hadn't receive any frequencies at LAX.

It is clear that the choice should have been:
HA - HNL
DL - SEA
UA - SFO
AA - LAX

Instead a lot of time was lost with frivolous proceedings.

It is also timed for connections from DEN: DEN-MIA-HAV. But it's not timed for connections from PHL or ATL, markets also serviced from F9 in MIA, albeit less than daily from May through the summer.

No really comparable. HND was a very limited entry long haul market with arrival/departure restrictions into a 1st world, 38M person business market vs Cuba as a leisure oriented, developing world, communist Caribbean market. Not much in common other than a few unrealistic expectations.

I love this report every weekend, but OAG is not the gospel and they clearly make mistakes regularly. When you see things that look strange like that I recommend just going to UA.com or to orbitz and just checking the actual schedule. If you look at ORD-MHT in June for example you'll see 3X daily.

Not really. The bust was not because of the locations, it was because the initial HND offerings were nighttime slots. The initial HND nighttime slots didn't work for any airline at any location (outside of LAX or SFO) in getting the business traffic needed for profitability. Once the HND slots were shifted to daytime slots, they became (very) profitable. Both JFK and DTW would work very well with daytime slots at HND. However when the DOT was awarding the HND daytime slots. DL felt they had a better chance winning with MSP than JFK or DTW, even though the later two would have probably been more profitable.

Those have been around for a few years. They just got a new owner in November I think it was, probably with the hopes of Cuba high. Wouldn't be surprised!

You just don't understand the process at all which is the problem. You do realize the price of airline tickets change something like 1 million times daily, but you seem to expect that the airlines file a schedule and are done with it. As much as you would like this report to be current whenever you read it, it is in fact static. It is a point in time the data is captured. I don't set the time. It gets changed just like you editing an Access database as it is edited. The airlines usually upload a mass schedule change in fell swoop, but they also make tweaks and corrections frequently. OAG may be archaic, but if the data is submitted according to their very exact rules it's fine. It's just a database. If somebody puts an invalid value in a field it drops out. Last week with the AA LGA-YYZ we know it was AA's error as the fares also went to $2400 RT at the same time that happened. Regardless, it's not me. I don't correct anything here, it's just as it is and the logic doesn't change from one week to the next. When things drop one week and reappear the next week it's not because I do anything other than post the new update. You probably also think UP adding and dropping TPA over and over again is just my mistake?

Someone will want the HAV frequency. United's EWR and IAH flights seem to be doing OK at 1x weekly. Maybe they'd want to take one of them daily or split the daily frequency between EWR and IAH (ie going from 2x weekly to 9x weekly - 4xIAH 5xEWR or something like that), especially if they ask to start in December or around then and don't have to operate it

OAG is apparently extremely bad at reconciling changes between regional partners for major airlines, that is just a fact of life. I'm not saying your report is bad, I'm just telling people when things seem odd, they should double check. In addition, I know many of the people at several of the airlines you just called "not very professional" and all I could say to that is you have literally no idea what you're talking about because if you knew any of the people you'd know how seriously they take their jobs and they are good at them.

Interesting that ALB, a mid-sized market, will now have five daily flights to DCA.

The expansion by AA at ORD also is very impressive. Seems to be a clear signal to UA that the competition will be heating up. One has to wonder, however, that as the CPE rises at ORD whether additional flights will be forthcoming, whether from AA or UA.

I am amazed that AA is adding a 2nd DFW-BOI flight. I am assuming it is only until summer travel season ends. I had read where the BOI airport director stated AA was going to up-gauge the DFW flt (from current A319), but looking at future sched after this 2nd flight begins (E170), seems the addition took place of bigger plane.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

Also, check out how Cathay is moving frequencies from LAX to SFO. Both will now be at 3x daily.

OAG is apparently extremely bad at reconciling changes between regional partners for major airlines, that is just a fact of life.

What does that even mean? OAG doesn't reconcile anything. UA/AA/DL file their whole schedule including the regionals. If they gave OO access to their filed schedule and allow them to monkey around in there than that is a formula for disaster. I seriously doubt they would give that access to any of the regionals.

In addition, I know many of the people at several of the airlines you just called "not very professional" and all I could say to that is you have literally no idea what you're talking about because if you knew any of the people you'd know how seriously they take their jobs and they are good at them.

I know probably know a lot more of them than you do. If you've looked at this report long enough you see patterns of who screws up what. DL is usually perfect except some of the EAS at risk flying is sometimes screwed up. OO probably gives those schedules to DL who slaps them into their schedule without much verification and sends it all to OAG. AA has had more errors lately, and it could be as simple as hiring somebody new or one of the regionals who give them schedules having hired somebody new. Same at UA. Your comment about "reconciling schedules between regional partners" tells me you don't understand the process. The "professional" schedulers are the ones reconciling the regional schedules, which probably consists of slapping the file OO/YV/whatever send them on to their own SSIM and sending it onward to OAG.

It is as if you believe that you pulled the data this morning, then UA went into the schedule later this morning and added those flights back in. That doesn't happen.

You also don't realize there is a lag between the time I post the schedule update and the time OAG captures it.

This is another one of those moments when I question why I waste my time doing this report.

Maybe you should just put in a disclaimer about this issue like you have on every other regular issue so we don't have to have this conversation every week?

The issue is that all other sources are lined up and don't show these changes. This is the only place these "changes" show up.

Also just FYI your description of how the prorate schedules are done is incorrect.

Again, I thank you for your report, but there needs to be acknowledgement of its limitations and not just blame the airlines for OAGs mistakes.

Enilria,

Thank you as always for the great, FREE info. I appreciate all the time you spend each week bringing us this data.
Most of us understand the method you use to compile the filings and understand that it is a simply a snapshot.
Please don't be discouraged by the few who cannot be pleased. Looking forward to next weeks post...

Agreed, thank you enilria. While we don't always agree on things, I appreciate this thread. I, too, am getting tired of the bickering over whether to take the information as gospel. We all know there are errors and will be changes - so why does it happen week after week? And as a lawyer, I don't want to see lots of disclaimers on an a.net thread; I see that enough in real life.

Enilra, this report is the main reason I still visit this website. I'm really tired of all the "DL is the world's greatest, most perfect airline", and "DTW does not have enough flights" threads here, but I love your report. Every week, I can count on a quick summary of what the new and cancelled flights are, thanks to your hard work.

Like 99.9% of the people who view your reports, I understand the limitations of the data you use. What I remember most is that virtually everything you share is accurate the first time, and if there are inaccuracies, they are almost always due to airline employee errors.

PLEASE do not stop posting this thread!

What is a prorate schedule? This is the only use of the word prorate in this thread.

If you have another place to get schedule changes that is up to your standards, I would like for you to switch to that.

There are two providers of schedule data (one of which is OAG) and these identical issues exist in both thus proving the cause.

I love this report every weekend, but OAG is not the gospel and they clearly make mistakes regularly. When you see things that look strange like that I recommend just going to UA.com or to orbitz and just checking the actual schedule. If you look at ORD-MHT in June for example you'll see 3X daily.

Spot-checking ORD-MHT for June, I see anywhere from 1 to 3 daily flights, with ExpressJet operating the flights early in the month, replaced by Trans States and GoJet later in the month. So it looks like things continue to shift. With UA in the position of coordinating/communicating those schedules and changes among 3 different regionals, apparent shifts seem quite understandable. Maybe it will eventually settle at 3x daily, and maybe it won't--but blaming OAG or enilria for the changes doesn't make any sense to me.

As an outsider to the airline industry, I've found this report tremendously interesting and the explanatory text at the front was very helpful in understanding it. I'm at the point now that I just skip past the explanatory text, and that's very easy to do. So it might actually be a decent idea to add another Q&A after the answer to "THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?" Something like...
"THIS LOOKS LIKE IT'S JUST CORRECTING AN ERROR FROM A PREVIOUS WEEK?"
"As mentioned, the carriers file the schedules and do make mistakes. They also correct these mistakes, often in a later week's report. This provides something to discuss below."

enilria, I definitely appreciate the effort you go to to post this report. I think it's a great service not just to current insiders, but also to those like me who found themselves curious to learn more about the business of aviation. My suggested addition to the Q&A is not because I think you owe it to us or need disclaimers, but because it's something that I genuinely have learned through following this thread and might have picked up on more quickly if it was stated right up front--and maybe there are other users like me who don't understand OAG but can still glean meaningful information from these discussions, and who might benefit from seeing it laid out.

I think these weekly threads are great information and discussion fodder. Considering the huge amount of information that needs to be processed to make it understandable, I don't take the effort for granted. I think most readers understand it may have quirks and errors, but isn't the interpretation of this information half the fun? Heck, even the booking sites have errors all the time. Besides, I haven't seen anyone post better weekly schedules updates than Enilria.

One thing AB is good at - driving EW off routes!!!! I'll repeat what I said last week - Make BRU the LH Group LCC hub!

That will take care of itself over the next year or so. Much of AB will become EW, where the AB 320s will prop up EW in short / mid haul and AB 330s will be added to the EW long haul fleet. SN will become part of EW no matter what, that's settled, but it will act in conjunction with DUS and TXL for LH Group once it's 100% with the AB integration into EW (everything except the TuiFly 737s, but including Niki). It will be interesting to see what happens to AB's ex-LGW Dash-8 ops, whether they'll end up, I'd say CL but they don't fly props at present.

OAGs systems must be archaic. This report is the only place these changes show up. They are normal on United.com and normal in all the GDSs. This is an OAG problem or a problem with this report, but its certainly not that all of the major airlines (it impacts DL and AA regularly as well) just have people doing their schedules who are "not very professional" as Enilria would have us believe.

I love this report every weekend, but OAG is not the gospel and they clearly make mistakes regularly. You state you love enrila's reports, but suggest he cross check OAG. I'm impressed at what he does. So what if some of the data turns out incorrect. Would you take what I assume is a lot of time to use OAG, then look up other sites before posting? I think not.

This expansion at SFO by VX is impressive. Will the new flights be around in a year is the question?

Interesting that ALB, a mid-sized market, will now have five daily flights to DCA.

The expansion by AA at ORD also is very impressive. Seems to be a clear signal to UA that the competition will be heating up. One has to wonder, however, that as the CPE rises at ORD whether additional flights will be forthcoming, whether from AA or UA.

Hard to say on the VX routes. They all have competition, but Alaska doesn't seem to mind mixing it up, and more transcons are what they need. My home airport, BNA, will be interesting. It's only been recently we got our first nonstop to SFO, now two. People here are begging for a PDX flight, so I could see that moved from SFO, but who knows.
