Celeberties in Airline ads/marketing

Sun Mar 26, 2017 4:42 pm

From time to time, we see celebrities used in airline advertising and marketing. They may be big USA stars or more from the home country of the airline. Actor Robert Redford did voice overs for United Airlines ads a few years ago and apparently a regular user of UA. Sometimes there can be issues from their endorsement or participation. Beyond the big money and in some cases, like with USA TV/Movie star Jennifer Aniston and Emirates Airlines, some may be offended as not for an American airline, and the political, labor, ethical, religious and related issues Emirates has to many people.
I would like to see other examples of celebrities use in airline ads and marketing in the present and past along their success or issues.

Some that spring to mind: Morgan Freeman, Kobe Bryant and Lionel Messi for Turkish, John Travolta and Christopher Walken for Qantas (they also used two cast members from the old TV series "Dallas" in print ads when they started flying there, IIRC), JAL has used a J-Pop band and a couple of baseball players in ads I believe. US carriers have used famous people to voice commercials (Donald Sutherland for Delta, Matt Damon for United, Jon Hamm for American) and I think I once saw Neil Patrick Harris in a promo for American's LA-JFK service.

National sports teams are used often, and my impression is that airlines that sponsor European football teams use players in advertising a fair bit.

I have no idea if it's effective or not.

Forgot about Rachel Weisz for BA, though maybe that was just promotional images when they introduced their new First class some years ago.

Jack Nicklaus had an endorsement deal with Eastern Airlines.
Serena Williams and CC Sabathia have an endorsement deals with Delta.

David Ortiz has an endorsement deal with JetBlue.
John Travolta had an endorsement deal with Qantas that included flying his 707 in Qantas livery.
Kevin Costner and Kobe Bryant had endorsement deals with Turkish Airlines.
Richard Simmons had an endorsement deal for Air New Zealand.

Airlines usually don't need brand ambassadors I would say. Price and Service give the best word of mouth advertising and that's more than enough. Not much point in spending $$$$ on brand ambassadors, which could be put in discounting tickets or improving service.

For Braniff, there were print ads featuring Andy Warhol and Sonny Liston, and one of a woman who was a Playboy centerfold (forgot her name) as part of the 'If you got it, flaunt it' campaign.

Ansett had a celebrity filled ad as it relaunched after its 767 grounding in early 2001. The ads were quite attractive but didn't turn the airline around and it shut down on Sep 11 2001. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwSElUc7obY

Peter Sellers did TWAs 'Taste of Europe Flying In The USA' spots in the 1960s. Later they had NBA stars promote Ambassador business class.

Matt Damon is the voice of United (or was just recently).
Ethel Merman and Audrey Meadows were at separate times, the spouse of Bob Six, the CEO of Continental Airlines. Not sure if that counts.
Susan Summers was in an ad for CO in the 70s

Not a visible presence, but The Fifth Dimension and TWA for the "Up, Up, and Away" promotion in the 70's.

Already mentioned by the OP :spin:
I wonder when people will understand:
Embraer 190 or simply E190, not ERJ-190. E-Jets are NOT ERJs!
Boeing 747-8, not Boeing 747-800. Same goes for 787.
Airbus A320, not Airbus 320.
Airbii does not exist.
