Some of the latest info:

    - ITA offers €90 million for the Alitalia brand (and website). They first only offered €50 million, and were told no by Alitalia. Closer to the €110 million valuation.
    - The decision on the sale of the brand should be made official tonight.
    - Sale of the aviation branch and sale of the brand are considered a single package. Not separate, as it was previously planned. The aviation branch includes the Alitalia fleet and airport slots.
    - The urgency of selling both together is to pay the second half of the salaries of Alitalia employees for September.
    - Over 7,000 Alitalia employees will be made redundant.
    - The maintenance and handling branches remain in Alitalia and will be sold later.

ITA managed to acquire the AZ brand, the uniforms and the website. So nothing changes. It is business as usual tomorrow.

Looks to be official.

Italia Trasporti Aereo has been awarded the Alitalia brand for 90 million euros per Leonard Berberi the aviation journlist at Corriere della Sera

May AZ live on for another 75 years :duck:

What a farce…
All it means is that the old AZ don’t have to reimburse €900m euros of illegals state aid to the Italian Govt.

Tomorrow Alitalia-ITA will have a streaming presentation called "ITA.Born in 2021". That's when we will officially know how the future will look like. According to this article, Alitalia-ITA joined SkyTeam.

MilleMiglia survives the Alitalia-SAI closure. You can still earn miles flying Air France, KLM and MEA, and some non-airline partners. SkyPriority will still work with those airlines if you have status with MilleMiglia.

Also curious, the Alitalia logo is now gone from the Alitalia.com website, replaced by the text "ALITALIA IN AMMINISTRAZIONE STRAORDINARIA"

So on AZ website they state they've ceased to exist but they don't even redirect you to ITA's website ?
Where are ITA's tickets sold then ? If they purchased the website for 90M€, they should update it with their (temporary) name.

ITA paid €90M for Alitalia to not use it. ITA Airways will be the name of the new airline, and the Alitalia purchase was to prevent others buying it. Similar to how SWISS bought Swissair.

The new airline will be called ITA Airways.

ITA did buy the Alitalia brand, but to prevent others from buying it and using it.

I don’t understand the blue in the livery. It looks like it was designed by someone who thinks color = great design (eg half of A.net).

The Italy national football team is called Azzurri, which means blue, and the jerseys are that colour. So ITA is trying to associate themselves with other Italian things apart from the obvious Alitalia.

The livery is terrible though.

The livery is ugly, but blue is a symbol of Italy. Azzuri. It is much more than football though most closely associated with the sport.

... and the Azzurri's blue colour was, in turn, a homage to the House of Savoy (the ruling dynasty until Italy become a republic in 1946), whose traditional colour was - you guessed it - Savoy blue or Savoy azure. Blue was a thing in Italy before Italy even became a country.

I don't mind the new logo, but I agree that the livery is an eyesore.

Livery looks like a bastard child of the Etihad A330 Manchester City special livery and old Alitalia. I fear it will look even worse in real life.
Anyone know when they will start selling tickets, launch operations and so on.

My God. What a p!ss-poor cock up this is.

You go to http://alitalia.com and you get a non-functioning website. You can't book on the landing page (at least not on a Mac running Safari or Chrome) But if you dig a little, and go to the 'Destinations' section, you can book ITA s.p.a. flights.

Go to http://www.itaspa.com and you get a half-legacy Alitalia, half-"amateur hour" website. For example, look at the ITA logo - it's so low resolution, it barely renders in a readable way. It also bears no resemblance to any of the fonts and marketing on the rest of the website. There are links on the page that simply do not work. There are banners that do not display properly. You can book ITA s.p.a.tickets there though.

The whole approach is just so unbelievably amateurish. How could anyone book with any confidence? Would you?

Marketing classes in future years will point to the ITA/Alitalia saga as "how not to undertake a takeover/rebranding"

The new livery will feature a BLUE airplane with an afterthought Italian tricolor on the tail.

What a shame, replacing Alitalia’s livery with this joke.

I will :duck: to avoid the tossing of rotten tomatoes, but I have seen FAR worse liveries in my time. The done-with-crayons American Airlines ones; Pan American post 1958, and, there was a United livery with white fuselage, red and blue stuff here and there, and four stars slapped on the vertical stabilizer; it was all a hopeless jumble.

I for one, like the blue.

Well, no.

In total the airline will be starting much smaller as Alitalia was yesterday. They will only start with 52 aircraft, which is 25 less than Alitalia had. They also employ 2,800 people instead of the 10,500 that were on Alitalia's pay-roll. ITA Airways route-map is also much smaller than Alitalia's.

This is a bigger break with Alitalia than everyone expected.

Cheers!

I am bit surprised... AFAIK, ITA AIRWAYS AOC contains officially only a handful of planes. In my own opinion impossible with this small fleet to fly the schedule (I checked the FCO homepage). Makes me wonder, whose aircraft AZ uses? Have all "old" ALITALIA frames been transferred overnight to the new AOC? Any more infos?!

I for one think that it is a great pity that they have decided to phase out the Alitalia brand, especially since its replacement looks like an afterthought. "Ali" means wings in Italian, which makes the old brand interesting and distinctive, at least to Italian speakers (and I say this as someone who has no love for the airline itself).

It is a pity that one of the few things worth preserving of the old carrier became collateral damage in the latest instalment of this farce, but as Italians know well, "everything must change for everything to remain the same".

I agree. People complain when it’s euro white, and they complain if there is colour, so hard to find that balance it seems.

ITA Airways isn’t exactly an amazing name, but it was likely time to retire the Alitalia brand. Air Italy could have worked, but that brand was tried and failed by a competitor so that wasn’t going to be an option. A pity really.

The contrast of the underwater blue of most of the livery and the primary colors of the Italian flag at the rear - who could have allowed this to happen?

I am - and they also did the 2015 refresh. Both great liveries, just as most of the others they have done. This is one of their worse designs though.

I've never weighed in on liveries. It always a personal preferrence. But this? It breaks a few design fundamentals. Not harmonious at all. Just way, way too much going on here. Many elements fighting for attention.

The poorly done livery and name do go with the story that ITA management was saying a week ago, when they were trying to get the Alitalia brand. They claimed that they didn't know what their name would be for when they launched, or what to put on the TV advert. It just looks like rushed design with little thought put into it - Inspired by Italian athletes uniforms and a French luxury brand (Louis Vuitton).

I was hoping for them to use the Alitalia name and livery, but the hopes for that happening are low now. They do need to find a way to use the trademark or it will becoming void through disuse. Swiss is protecting Swissair by letting an aviation club use the name.

Which is why it boggles my mind that they didn't use the quite obvious Azzurri name, instead making do with the clunky ITA.

It was on RAI that ITA joined SkyTeam. I guess they are working on an official announcement and update the website when it happens?

ITA still doesn't have any social media presence. No official Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Also curious to see that the domain they are using was registered on October 4th, so the turn around of the name was rather quick.

Interesting link, thank you. Makes me wonder why they decided to stick to a mix of A319 and A320. Wouldn't it make more sense to keep the Embraers in addition to the A320? Seat difference between 319 and 320 is not that great.
