Air China suspend its flight to Pyongyang.

Fri Apr 14, 2017 12:46 pm

According to Air China, they will suspend flights to Pyongyang starting from next week, and the last flight just back to Beijing from Pyongyang a few hours ago. After the suspension, there are no Chinese airlines flying between the two countries anymore with service only provided by Air Koryo. Before the suspension it was flown three times a week by 737, although reports said it is common for these flights to be cancelled due to low load factors.
There are also some speculations that this service cut could be linked to Air Koryo's launch of Pyongyang-Dandong route last month, which is flown twice a week and its first flight used a 73-seats An-148.

Logical choice. A war is imminent, better to stay away from North Korea for the time being.

Who knows if there will be a working runway at Pyongyang next week.

I bet Pyongyang is getting non airline jets with officials these days. We let those crazy men go on & now they're able to produce bad bombs & missiles. Everyone rational seems brainwashed or executed, it took 40 years. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-02-2 ... craft-guns

:checkmark: Beijing probably doesn't want to make any statement to support either side in a potential war yet. Beijing is only about 500 miles away

This service had just restarted two weeks ago as a seasonal one.

Seriously... Do China have some specific intelligence or info that a war is indeed imminent? They recently sent back North Korean coal as well.

I'm not sure a war is imminent, but this is definitely political gamesmanship.

The airline has clarified that the report is wrong. They are merely cancelling some flights due to poor demand, and will likely only fly on demand.
It's huaiwei...not huawei. I have nothing to do with the PRC! :)

Yeah, I never really understood who used this flight. Chinese consultants and government workers providing aid? Pretty much every other visitor to the country is set up with a flight on Air Koryo when they get their visa.

From what I read, this statement is not from the airline directly, but is instead from an Air China communication team member when questioned by Reuters.

Because Pyongyang could be a smoking ruin by this time next week?

Nah, I don't think it's about "imminent" armed conflict -- if that were the case they'd drop service to ICN given how very close that airport is to the dividing line between the Koreas. Rather, I think it is yet another message from Beijing to Pyongyang that the latter needs to behave better. Having the flag carrier of the PRC end service to FNJ is a loss of face for the DPRK.

The demand is always poor. The flights will resume when Beijing is happier with the DPRK government's behavior.

There is simply no demand for Air China service at this time. And China is simply unhappy with Pyongyang.

While the tension is reported in headline news everyday on global news network, lives are actually quite normal in South Korea. I was just back from Seoul yesterday after spending a week there. I even visited the DMZ and it was very calm there. Tourists are still flocking to the DMZ and it's business as usual across the country. I think when the South Korean military is calling up reserves and the South's government starts to evacuate key functions from Seoul (which is just 60km from the border), it would mean real business. For now, everyone is posturing.

However, it should note that the South has been preparing for the doomsday for a while. For the last few years, the government has instructed large businesses to move some of their operations to cities further away, including Cheongju, Daegu and Busan.

Air China has since clarified that it is not suspending any flights, just canceling some.

According to media report, the April 12 CA flight to Pyongyang, the second last flight before the suspension/temporary cancellation, was "almost full", with most passengers being reporters from around the world heading to Pyongyang to report about its celebration on Kim's festival

Depends on the travel agency you are with. My agent put me on Air China by default, I had to request the Air Koryo flights specifically.

You can choose to fly Air Koryo or Air China. The latter is a little bit more expensive, but you are free to choose carrier.
Moreover, for every "western" tourist, it seemed to me there were 20 Chinese tourists. Though it might seem there are few tourists, Chinese are a crowd (comparatevely speaking).
Next flight: IAH-DBX-MRU-ANT
