A340 To be scrapped

Tue Apr 18, 2017 1:43 pm

Hi there,

On the 27th of April a A340 will be ferried to EHTW to be scrapped, is there somewhere a list to see which aircraft is going to get scrapped and where?

Thanks in advance!

Do you mean EHTW? It's a small civil airport in the Netherlands called Twente Airport, in the past an Dutch Air Force airbase.

sad to see such a beautiful plane go away, love the four engines but twins are the way now even at LH.

Yes, AELS, is a scrapper that is already in operation on EHWO, but because of the large runway, they got permission to scrap 12 widebody airplanes on EHTW(Enschede Airport Twente).
The cockpit section of the A340 has already been sold, to a manufacturer of Aircraft Simulation Cockpit for training on A330.

There are rumours going around KLM might send one (or more) 747-400's to Twente, but those rumours are very vague. Don't pint me down on this one.
Other than that; they've said they want to disassemble more planes here. Which or when I don't know.

A340s has been scrapped progressively for over a decade now. Why is this single airframe noteworthy?
People are saying. Believe me.

1) We had a source for it 5 months in advance; there's something to be said for that
2) If I understood correctly, the facility scrapping it doesn't scrap many WBs
3) Looks like we got some pretty good photos of the scrapping.

Does anyone have more history on this plane? How many cycles and when was it delivered?

It is Serial Number 167 with a first flight 08-Apr-1997 and delivered to Austrian Airlines on 23-Apr-1997 as OE-LAK. It was transferred to Swiss within the Lufthansa group on the 17-Dec-2007 and flew with Swiss (HB-JMK) until retirement in April 2017. No idea on how many hours/cycles I’m afraid.

I heard the next plane might be a 345/346. Already contacted my sources at the scrapper but they don't have any more information on this.

I don't have the number of cycles, but I don't expect to be high either back in 2007 or even ten years later since the a340 was mostly used on long-haul to Asia, South America, South Africa, and U.S. West Coast over its career.

Are any A340's being kept at a museum or a the factory?
While perhaps not the most beloved wide body, I've always found them to be a very pretty bird. Plus all those flights from SEA- CPH over the years with SK gave me plenty of time to bond with this sexy plane.
I understand why they are going away, but I don't have to like it (ditto for the 747).

Agreed. I'm rather fond of the A340-300. I find it to be a really elegant and well-proportioned airplane. And I flew on HB-JMK (named "Aarau") ZRH-ORD once back in 2008.

I would have to check my old vacation pictures, but there is a big possibilty i just realised i flew on this plane 11 years ago, and for it to be scrapped in my hometown, just wow, the coincidence!

KLM's PH-BFR that was retired last Saturday will be the next aircraft to be scrapped at Twente. She will arrive at the end of this month.
