Surinam Airways returns twice to Amsterdam Schiphol after flaps issues

Wed Apr 19, 2017 10:07 pm

A flaps problem on this Surinam Airways Airbus A340-313 registered PZ-TCR from Amsterdam to Paramaribo, forcing the pilots to return twice to Amsterdam Schiphol!

Seems strange that they tried again so soon afterwards considering it must have been a fairly serious problem, I would assume this is due to the airlines little fleet, needing that aircraft later on

May I ask what you base those assumptions on? An in-depth knowledge of aircraft systems and maintenance? An inside line to the OPS department of the airline? Or, are you just offering ideas as they pop up?
Signature. You just read one.

He's just offering ideas as they pop up. That fact that Surinam's small fleet means they lack flexibility when an aircraft has a technical problem has very little bearing on when they put a plane back into the air. If it's got something wrong with it, they ain't gonna fly it.

It was the first flight of the A340-300 after a C-check in Malta and also one of the first (9th code share flight) where they code-shared with TUI.
(Tui will start flying to Paramaribo from July 3th on a weekly basis with their 787-8 and the SLM A340 will be used on TUI flights to the Canary Islands this summer)

So they combined the bad track record of SLM and TUI and got this.

One assumes they had no issues on the Malta to Amsterdam flight?

(not to pick nits but that also means this would be the second flight..and the third flight...;))

This may be on who did the heavy check. Would a test flight have located this problem?
