Qatar airways new destinations

Mon Apr 24, 2017 10:26 am

Qatar Airways has announced plans to fly to Cardiff, along with a raft of new destinations including San Francisco, Cardiff, Malaga, Lisbon, Chittagong, Kiev and Mombasa.

The carrier has yet to publish a press release confirming the new Cardiff route, but Business Traveller‘s Middle East edition is currently at a Qatar Airways press conference at Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, where the news was confirmed.

What - no return to LGW ?
Cool for CWL, but I reckon that had the runway been longer at BRS they might have preferred there instead.

The previous thread talked also about Mykonos and Pattaya.

What happened with the thread and those destinations?

Well, looks like I won't have to say "where's QR at SFO" on any thread anymore

Hey guys,
What about Canberra? Qatar had announced it's intention to fly there, possibly via Sydney (which seems ludicrous to me...)

London market is enough served by QR. 6 Daily flights to DOH, are a lot, and all with widebodies: 2. Daily 388 + 2 Daily 359 + 1 Daily 77W + 1 Daily 788

Doha to Cardiff 3,360 miles (around 100 more than Norwegian's Edinburgh-Stewart), 737 Max-8 range quoted as 3,700 in lowish density two-class configuration. First deliveries to Qatar 2018. Hmmm... Wonder if Boeing has a few more miles up its sleeve??? Or maybe A321NEOs that the airline still has on order...?

It is; a perfect fit for closeted GCCs. Ying and yang.

I would expect Ibiza in the future. IBZ is a way bigger market.

I'm surprised this comes before Thessaloniki, which could most likely sustain a daily flight year-round. There were strong rumours about QR flying there but it looks like they are focusing on Skopje in the broader area for now.

I'm stunned that JMK has got one of the ME3 starting there.
Surely HER & RHO - if they want to dabble in seasonal leisure routes - would be bigger markets.
About time AGP had a ME3 connection though - loads of serious money down there.
Agree that IBZ and possibly PMI could be on the QR route map too in future.

Mykonos is much more of a premium destination and it's a lot more popular with Arabs and high net worth tourists from around the globe. Think St Tropez, Marbella, the Hamptons, etc. Crete and Rhodes are more mass tourism oriented and mostly attract European tourists. If this works out I expect Santorini to be next.

I'm pretty sure BA also launched JMK (and JTR) from LHR before HER and RHO.

Heraklion and Rhodes are European destinations.

Mykonos (and Santorini) are global destinations with tourism from Asia, Middle East or Australia.

Other "global" holiday destinations in the Mediterranean I could see are Olbia (and Qataris have investments there), Dubrovnik (TK flies there) and Ibiza.

I wonder if CWL is a pre-cursor to a maintenance deal with investee IAG/BA...rotate frames through CWL for checks. In which case makes sense as a new route but don't expect multiple daily frequencies!

So they announce SFO without a start date and delay the already announced LAS service. Who wants to wager that they start day of week cancels to the US soon .. due to technical reasons of course.

Pattaya is a way to serve more Bangkok, I presume? It'll be interesting to see how this one goes...

Also, they didn't serve Chittagong yet? I thought that they would have, buy maybe i just figured the ME3 were bigger in Bangladesh than they are.

Thats a great coup for CWL. Dont think this has anything to do with BA Maintenance. Will be interesting to use EDI as a benchmark for QR smaller regional ops. 5 times per week 787? (although hopefully with routine loads a little higher), at least they wont have EY competing.
Great for locals. CWL becoming a OW focus! (just a shame BA only use it for one thing). Would be surprised if another UK route/announcement ie BFS was fone separately. Cant see this being operated by a 737 in future unless loads dire.

I understand this is ATM, noise has to be made. But this is the second time over a couple of months that QR comes out with a list of new destinations with no start date. So, what happened to GIG and SCL? LAS now delayed for technical reasons?

Too much noise and hardly any facts? Is this Al Baker's own brand of "Panem et Circenses"?

Probably 4 weekly to start with. CWL has an excellent relationship with IAG through BAMC, Vueling and IB Express. Though they might have to spend the winter upgrading the terminal and executive lounge and check in area! It's a great coup for the airport!

I'm surprised any ME3 is considering adding US service in light of all the travel and electonics restrictions. EK just cut back quite a but.

Extremely good news for CWL after the years of doom and gloom. BRS management must be shocked at this news. :D

Kiev (I assume it's KBP?) seems an interesting destination to add given that EK gave up on it after less than a year (albeit with the political problems that occurred). I guess if QR use a smaller aircraft they'll be at an advantage.

I know QR have been rumoured for a number of years of trying to get into MRU but it hasn't worked out. One rumour is that EK (who also have a codeshare with MK -majority owned by the Government) aren't keen to have an ME3 competitor muscling in, so have put pressure on the government not to let QR or EY for that matter, in.

QR has A320 to A380 and everything in between. They will have B737MAX to B779. So it has lot of flexibility. With less than 1/4 of ASKMs QR serves more destinations than the largest competitors.

Hmm, Qatar plays in a very different universe to EY and I dare say EK. There seems to be a lack of interest in being a numbers run airline. But for the consumer that can add options so we shouldn't whine to much about it..
It would be interesting to know when QR plans to become profitable. I am not even sure that's important or a concern to them. Scale and all that but well, when EY bankrolled by an Abu Dhabi that has huge, huge pockets has to be reigned in, you struggle to see how QR can expand like there was no tomorrow.
QR has also struggled with keeping staff, due to a rather special work culture and a less appealing host city. Doha needs to pay a premium to retain certain key expats compared with many of the competing Gulf cities. Ah well, why bother with those concerns, QR is going for it and well, we passengers get cheaper airfares so I really shouldn't complain.
Ive been an expat for soon 20 years and well, the airfares back to London have never been cheaper than now. Thats progress for me.

Pattaya is hmm the biggest brothel in the world. Would assume there will be 80% male passengers going there. Do they fly to Clark too? well Clark probably sees plenty of OFW demand so the passengers probably aren't similar but the marketing one can do with those two destinations on the map...
Mykonos Europe's premier summer gay destination. Fabulous says everyone except my mates Greek family who have lived for a few hundred years on the island but struggle to adapt to the modern realities that descend on their island. QR to a premier gay destination. Maybe there is a market and the flights isn't that long so who knows but I didn't see that one coming.
South Wales, Cardiff, has a population of around 2 million. I assume they expect some traffic from the English areas bordering Wales as well but from Bristol they will face competition from LHR. Its a 2 hour coach ride on the M4, probably 15 minutes less if you drive. The M4 is a decent motorway. The coach sees hourly service from several locations in Bristol. There is also the train. South Wales is not the most prosperous part of the UK nor is there a huge Indian/Bengali population. In short, its not the first UK destination I would have thought of when it comes to missing links from the UK to Asia.

They do have two A319LRs in an all-J configuration that would comfortably make CWL-DOH nonstop, if they are impatient.

I can't see CWL being a narrow body especially if you take cargo into account.
Everyday there is 2 lorry loads of air cargo that goes to LHR and MAN plus add on in 2019 Aston Martin starts production at St Athan and TVR starts this year in Ebbw Vale. Mostly likely it'll be a 787 8 at 4 weekly to start with.

BRS really needs this, it has a lot more demand in the SW region that Cardiff airport. I always wondered why EK, QR, or EY don't fly a 787 from BRS. Most people from BRS have to travel to LHR in order to fly as BRS airport mainly has leisure destinations.
I make videos about my airplane travels.

Emirates don't have the aircraft. Etihad do but BRS has no cargo and logically BHX would be next for them. It looks like CWL was able to put together a better overall package than BRS.
Now people from Bristol will now have the option of travelling from Cardiff!
