When did BA reduce LHR-EWR to 2 x daily (from 3) and why?

Wed Apr 26, 2017 8:34 am

Anyone know when BA reduced their 3 x daily LHR-EWR service to 2 x daily and why? Are there any plans for them to increase to 3 x daily again? Guessing most people prefer to use JFK...

Preference for JFK over EWR aside, BA can connect onto AA flights (and from AA onto BA) from throughout USA & Latin America at JFK which isn't an option at EWR given the limited AA presence there. It makes sense for BA to focus on JFK while still maintaining a presence in EWR

True, although for some reason I thought AA routed most of their connecting passengers via ORD, PHL and MIA - mainly, I'm guessing, as all 3 of these airports are much bigger AA hubs than JFK and serve more destinations.

Dropped from Summer 2015 when BA186 EWR-LHR was dropped.

I think they upgauged the later flight from the 788 to the 789 at about that time, but ICBW.

Interesting an VS also dropped down from IIRC 3X daily to a single flight a day either on the A330 or 789?

I remember VS for years had an AM flight and 2 evening flights EWR-LHR for quite some time.

BA is now 2X daily:
6:20 PM departure 772
9:30 PM departure 789.

Air India also is running an 789 on EWR-LHR (Although I would not recommend it)

EWR is a Star Alliance hub, whilst BA is One World so very little connectivity. 2x daily on sub-250 seater has remained to serve local market on that side of town, (plus offering more connectiivity onto Europe via LHR than Star can now that BMI is gone).

Yes I thought VS had reduced theirs too. What's the reason for the overall reduction of BA and VS though? Why were they able to both sustain 3 flights previously but can't now?

BA are just there to keep that market under control, to keep virgin under control and there will be a certain amount of flyers who prefer EWR over JFK.

Has UA (CO) increased as much over time. I belive UA is up to 6x EWR-LHR now.

Yes. I cannot remember the exact progression through the UA/CO merger, but I think once CO got access to LHR they were only at 2x EWR-LHR

4/26 schedule
6x UA 763
1x BA 772
1x BA 789
1x AI 788
1x VS 333

I would be interested to see how AI is doing in getting NYC-LHR passengers on that. I would have guessed most continue to Ahmadabad, or transfter to another AI flight to another destination. Unless AI can price EWR-LHR really competitively can't see too many taking them for that route.
