HNL Changes Name To Inouye Int'l ?

Fri Apr 28, 2017 3:22 am

Aloha All,

Was scrolling through Instagram today and a pilot I follow posted a picture of the latest Jeppesen airport diagram for HNL (effective today, 27April) that lists HNL as Inouye Int'l. I hadn't heard of any plans to officially name the airport after the late Senator. I checked several of the local news outlets and haven't seen anything mentioned. Has anyone on here heard of this plan? Surely Jeppesen did not take it upon itself to change the name. I wonder if this has anything to do with the bill going through state legislature to transfer ownership from the State to an proposed independent airport corporation.

Well I'm just extremely happy it won't be "Barack Obama International Airport".

Dan Inouye is likely the only person for a very long time that will/has earned a big enough status in Hawaii to get an airport named after themselves.
Airport (noun) - A construction site which airplanes tend to frequent

How strange - not even a whiff of the possibility in the news (and you know how the news here is so desperate for something to say), nor at the airport where I practically live. I wouldn't surprised in the long-run but sounds like someone's jumped the gun or some wishful thinking. Another example is how there are so many references these days to the Roman Tmetuchl Palau International Airport when that name was a Palau senate bill that died 6 years ago in committee.

I would agree, the late senator did more for Hawaii & has always been a champion of the "little guy". He leaves some very large shoes to fill. A selfless soul who dedicated his life to public service for the land & people he loved.

Ditto. The greatest Hawaiian Senator deserves this recognition

I also have not seen this in the news... guess just too much news these days. :white:

An event like this would have involved a ceremony attended by many dignitaries and would have been reported by our local news stations. There was nothing of the sort reported. As far as I can tell, a Senate resolution was introduced last year, but was deferred in committee.

The official website for HNL still calls it "Honolulu International Airport," and there's nothing on the Hawaii DOT Airports Division website (or the Governor's website) about renaming HNL. Say what you will about the state government, I think they'd have mentioned something somewhere about one of their airports being renamed if that were actually the case. :spin:

(Never mind that Dan Inouye should have a high school named for him instead of renaming the airport, but that's another issue.)

Maybe since the HI State Government/HIDOT is unable to maintain/remodel/upgrade the airports to 21st century standards (e.g. Free wifi) maybe the thinking is that renaming the airports will do the trick.

For example, KOA was renamed as of Jan 1, 2017 to Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole.

I guess the resolution was passed last year. The official website now says Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in the title banner.

For what it's worth, the airport privatization bill died in the legislature today so that's done...for now

You are happy? Naming an airport after Obama hurts your life? That is embarrassing to admit on a forum, at least you can stay anonymous.

No worries of that, they wanted somebody who was born there. ;) KIDDING!

In general, I'm not a fan of this airport political renaming [email protected], whether it be Reagan National or Little Rock Bill and Hillary Clinton.

You are right, Obama clearly hurt their feelings by being uppity.
