Qatar Airways planning another acquisition

Fri Apr 28, 2017 5:35 pm

Company CEO, Mr. Akbar Al Baker has stated that his company will be acquiring a stake in another foreign carrier which he did not disclose. He said that the world has much potential for QR expansion.

QR will be finalizing its acquisition of 49% of Meridiana Airlines in the upcoming days.

Any idea which carrier would be QR's next target? I say it would be in South America.

Alitalia? That way it would own the main Italian market.

I would say it's in Far East Asia.
I believe Qatar owns part of the LATAM Group.

Maybe they changed their mind with SriLankan Airlines?

On the same page there is another article: "Malaysian Airlines CEO is on track to revamp the airline"

MH has great growth potential and desperately needs the credibility of a premium airline.

Qatar doesn't own any part of the LATAM Group as far as I know.

QR bought a 10% stake in LATAM back in December.

Complete guess but Flybe? It would give them a European regional carrier that could feed there network and Flybe itself does need investment to move forward and the Qatari government did mention before they were interested in investing in the UK.

I don't see QR investing into Flybe when they have a 20% stake in IAG.

I see this as the best guess. Increase LATAM stake to 25%+

Maybe they could get them to put in shorthaul J to match AV :duck:
I like the Finnair Idea. Europe to N/E Asia over HEL and South Asia/ Australia over DOH.
How about JL? Do they still need capital?

My guess would be bigger stake in Latam .. Albakar expressed his interest in the South American market during many interviews + the recent news about law changes in Brazil that allow 100% foreign ownership of airlines

Could we see Qatar investing in China?

Very reasonable assumption.

MH is also in oneworld.

I believe they just reported 1Q losses and until they improve for 2Q I don't think anyone would invest in them currently.I know Qatar bought into other loss making airlines or airline groups.Norwegian results will improve but until then no one will probably invest in them.

I think they will buy an Indian airline since they can't get more seats to India, but I hope they don't do what EY did and go on a spending spree buying failing airlines.

I doubt losses are a big deal for QR...

As I've stated before, QR has to be watching whats going on with AZ. While I don't think an outright purchase of AZ will happen, I believe offers for any desirable AZ assets will be made.

It would be nice to see an increase in OW's stake in CZ.... maybe tipping the balance to a OW conversion.

That would be awesome. OW needs an African carrier.

Thanks Polot for the correction. With the new law in Brazil foreign airlines can fully take over a Brazilian airline, is that correct? Even though I don't see LATAM allowing that to happen.

The timing is perfect. Should the Italian government indeed end its support for Alitalia after the summer, Meridiana could turn out to be a great investment.

Please not Virgin Australia....
I could imagine Etihad's new leadership wanting out of VA, and offering a great deal to an expansionist Qatar.
Quite what Singapore Airlines and Hainan would think of it though....
No, won't happen.
I agree that LATAM would be a good bet, with some kind of Italian deal involving Alitalia and Meridiana an outside chance.
Cheers,

I actually think the Cueto family are clueless about what to do with Latam Brasil. So I would not be surprised if they decided to sell the former TAM.

How about EasyJet? Soon no longer restricted by EU ownership limitations, yet broad Euroland coverage and profitable.

Maybe SK? I know that politically Scandinavian mentality and Sharia ones won't get along very well, but some partnerships could work. Still I see the merger SK/AY even though 4 hubs would be a real problem...

Could Indigo sell out? They could demand some great valuations right now.

There was talk on Turkish media this week about QR. investment into TK, but the TK chairman who happens to be in DXB for a travel conference laughed it off.

I think QR is planning an Indian acquisition. Yes, Mr. Al-Baker had said multiple times that he wanted to start a new airline in India, but I think QR will take a share in Indigo. Yes, there are thousands of denials from both sides, but in the end, there are some behind the scenes talks, and probably if the price is right, QR will become a partner in Indigo or perhaps another Indian airline.

My 2 cents on Air Costa(India). Active Pan India AOC, no fleet, 49% QR and 51 % Qatari sovereign fund. A off the shelf brand new airline, ready to start ops in couple of months.

New AOC takes 12-18 months, investing in existing requires management culture change, couple of years.
