Laurinburg–Maxton Airport (MXE). Either the salvage company that owns the aircraft has very light security or the whole video shoot was pre-arranged with permission.

For those who can't see the video - try using an American-based proxy. I think they've limited it only to US IPs

That has always been my number one fantasy exploring an airplane boneyard like that...not just seeing the planes, but getting to explore them inside and out! I'm pretty jealous of those guys.

Having been to that airport several times 16-18 years ago, the people working there were extremely friendly and welcoming. They love cheap beer and are kind to point out the places where several cottonmouth snakes were found (including one in the women's bathroom).

It is NOT a place I would recommend wandering around unannounced. Considering the guy whose truck I rode in had a two rifles in it and probably a pistol or three, I wouldn't want to startle them.

The first time I was there, I was told to "do whatever you want, but watch out for snakes and ticks."

Yeah I remember seeing that video a while back. Definitely cool stuff and for sure something all of us a.netters would love to get the opportunity to do. Not sure how current google earth satellite images are, but looks like those planes are all still there.
Looks like the video was filmed in the southwest corner of the field which it looks like the two 747s and 727s are still there along with two DC9s and a 732. In the northwest corner I see two DC10s, four 727s, and that 757 that was shown in the video. That airport looks really tiny with little to no activity... I bet it wouldn't be hard to get access...legally.

Well since D.B. Cooper walked down the stairs of a 727 and they walked up the stairs of the 727, wouldn't they be D.B. Cooper's antecedents instead of his descendants? Image

Video is good and looks like fun but climbing out onto the top of the 747 is a no-no. This is a slip and done suicide mission. It is 5 stories and old paint, slippery shoes, condensation or any other problem and you are done and so are future tours of the boneyard.

As was noted, the video was shot at Laurinburg-Maxton Airport in North Carolina, a couple of hours east of CLT. I stopped by a few years back. I didn't try to access the area where they shot the video, I'd been told the folks there didn't appreciate strangers wandering around, but I did get a few shots from the fence with a long lens.

They have several old Northwest DC-10s and 727s on the ramp near the FBO/Terminal. A friend and I did shoot those - we told the guy at the FBO desk that we wanted to shoot them, and he didn't seem to much care.

I'm jealous! Not sure about climbing up and standing on the roof though, dangerous with no safety harness.

This video is fantastic. I liked the way it was compiled, but it is short and you need to pause to look at any of the detail.

 Agreed!

Well, a fantasy for sure, particularly when I was younger. Loved exploring. Not lucky enough for airplanes like this though. More abandoned buildings, and railyards.

Yes, a high degree of risk. Great video, but could have so easily been fatally injured there. :taekwondo:

No problems viewing video for me (Australia).

Thanks for sharing!

:hyper:

Not to take away from this, but I found this freaking awesome video taken in Bali, Indonesia. It is actually two aircraft found! I like the way they've done this, including the use of drones. High risk stuff again though, I think that is what makes watching this all so exciting, as the armchair traveller.

I am unusually sentimental, by nature, but when I see planes like this, I can't help but think of that day when the last passengers disembarked, when the crew pulled power and shut down the engines for the last time. Machines are just machines, and yet, to me - well, they aren't.

I completely understand. It's almost eerie seeing that 747 and knowing at one time it mightily cruised over the Pacific and Atlantic with hundreds of passengers onboard...now just sitting abandoned, sad and creepy somehow.

What model of 737 had a full-size exit door over the wings? I've never seen that before.

Thats because it was added after it was retired. ;) (or at least i have never seen a picture of it flying with the door, just the standard -200 over the wing window exit)

Its a 737-2E7A, PK-RII.

I was there the end of October. There were 2 727's and 2 DC-10-30's on the ramp. I see on FB that they are scrapping the 727's on the ramp, now.

What's to secure? The aircraft are gutted.

Very cool; would be fun. Going to Marana/Pinal AirPark for the tour this coming Friday, but we sure won't be able to do any of what those guys did!!

Fun doing manual weight and balance calcs on those birds. (Somebody had to know in case the computers went down, which they did frequently).
Is just me, or is flying not as much fun anymore?

Haha I was thinking the same thing - I wouldn't normally do something like this, but when it comes to abandoned aircraft, well, I'd be there too. Thank you for sharing! And another HUGE thank you for the grammatically correct thread title! I'm sorry but I get seriously triggered every time I see the horrifically poor use of apostrophes (or should I say apostrophe's) on this forum. So thank you!!! 727s and 747s!!! YAY!!!
