I was just in Nice and was surprised to see a DY 787 land last night. I had to check the timetable. DY operates the 787 on the OSL-NCE route 5 times a week (Mo-Th-Fr-Sa-Su) alternating with a 737 (Tu-We).
Why this type on this route? Any other European airports seeing the DY 787? I've seen one at CDG I believe.

OSL-BCN as well if I'm not mistaken.
Norwegian flies a couple of transatlantic routes from CDG, that might explain the one you saw there.

fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

I have a direct view of the western part of the runway and happened to see DY 1406 landing yesterday evening as well, a 788, and asked myself the same question.

It will be a 788 today as well, then 738 so I think it might be because of the long weekend, perhaps more capacity needed?
Lately, BA has been using their aging 767 equipment here as well.

Like I said in my OP, I checked the Summer 2017 timetable (valid until October 28) and DY1407/1406 OSL-NCE is available as a regular service with the 787.
For those interested: arrival 20h05, departure 21h05 (Mo-Th-Fr-Sa-Su).
I understand that it increases capacity but the 787 is not really designed for medium haul.

According to the same timetable, BA operate the B767 on two of their 7 daily flights to LHR: BA346/347 and BA348/349. All other flights are A320.
This has always been the case in the Summer months I believe. BA used the L1011 back in the 70s/80s.

I believe it is to squeeze the largest amount of flight hours out of the aircraft, plus these flights have a demand for more than the 737...
Fairly sure it has nothing to do with crew training, as most of the captains entering DY on the 787 are already typerated and all of the FO's are eligible for simulator only training.

So the original question was: DY 787 European routes? The demand to Côte d'Azur is great in summer and Norwegians seem to prefer direct flights regardless the price. Any other European destinations? Canaries during the winter perhaps?

As I mentioned above BCN + AGP both get the 787 to OSL. There are some really cheap OW's in September on the 787. Couldn't find any Canary flights.

Nothing to do with direct flights, the B737 also fly direct and non-stop OSL-NCE. But more capacity, certainly.
