At the time of the episode, ANA Flight 6 NRT-LAX was delayed due to thunderstorm activity. It eventually departed one hour and 40 minutes later than scheduled.

Clearly, this individual will be looking at spending some time in prison if what's being reported holds true. The Japanese do not take kindly to this kind of behavior, to say the least. The American Embassy might be able to get him an earlier release, but it will be a stretch. Prison time in Japan can be tough as there is strict regimen and rules. Break the rules and it gets ... much tougher.

All the American Embassy will do is to follow the trial to ensure that the Japanese authorities properly follow their own procedures and may connect him with a lawyer. The State Department's website is pretty clear on this:
"We cannot:
Get U.S. citizens out of jail
State to a court that anyone is guilty or innocent
Provide legal advice or represent U.S. citizens in court
Serve as official interpreters or translators
Pay legal, medical, or other fees"

Basically, if you're an American citizen and decide to be an idiot and break the law of the foreign country you're in, by, let's say, getting into a drunken brawl on an airplane, you're SOL from the US Embassy's point of view.

It's not, but thanks for the generalization.
