SOFIA Flying Around FAT

Mon May 08, 2017 8:21 pm

Does anyone know why SOFIA was flying around Fresno today? I almost crashed my car driving back from my lunch break.

You HAVE to be an aviation nerd to understand that title....LOL

FAT is used a lot for wake turbulence testing. Maybe that?

:rotfl: You'd have to switch planes at LAX and somewhere in Europe since PMD / Air Force Plant 42 doesn't currently have scheduled commercial service.

Unless you meant that the capital of Bulgaria became airborne and somehow floated around in the skies above FAT.

I heard they have a little underground city in FAT, but high above is news to me :rotfl:

Kidding aside, here's more on SOFIA, ex N536PA with PanAm and ex N145UA with United, hard to believe UA had a bunch of SPs flying the globe for the ULH routes of that era.

I heard something flying past Hollister this morning, looked up and saw it. Found it on flightaware, and was curious what they were doing.

Back in university I'd be too old to laugh at that.

The flight didn't go high enough for observations - it needs to be in the 40,000'+ band to get any worthwhile science from the telescope, and the telescope door isn't opened during daylight anyway as the sun can damage the mirror and optics. However, they have just installed a new science instrument - an infrared camera and polarimeter. But SOFIA doing a daylight flight at lowish levels - I'll take a punt on some sort of training or testing onboard equipment ahead of the forthcoming New Zealand deployment.

I believe it's the only 747SP with a glass cockpit, albeit with a flight engineer position.

My apology.

Anyway, from a proctical point of view, since Uranus is smaller, I just assumed the probe has to be closer.
