No, they were not the launch customer. United was. They were an early customer for the type, though.

757-300 has common pilot type rating, similar number of seats & burns a lot less fuel. Delta got 16 757-300 in the NW purchase & they had 14 767-200 at the time. So it was easy to swap them if they wanted the same seating on a route, but the shuffled the fleet around instead.

Nope, the 752 sat slightly more people than the 762 in CO's configuration. CO's 762s were fairly premium heavy for its size, hence the lower number of seats.

I think DL flew the last 762 flight in 2006 or so. Merger didn't happen until the end of 2009.

Actually, the 757-300 is quite a bit bigger seating-wise than the 762, at least in current configs. Max pax capacity is 289 for the 762 vs 295 for the 753 in high density.
To put things in perspective, at CO at least, the 762 sat *I think?* 3 pax more than the 757-200, and operationally cost just as much as 763. The 753 is even bigger PLUS cheaper.
...But the merger and the acquisition of NW 753s happened later.. after the demise of the 762 fleet.
But, yes, I know, the 762 was a lovely airplane.... sweet...

I flew the 762 ATL-SLC and ONT-ATL in Feb and Mar of '05...they were retired around May-June.

I don't remember when the 762's went.

I miss seeing the 762's...I always liked them over any other 76 variant

FYI, N103DL is the one that almost went into the Pacific on takeoff from LAX back in the early days. Fuel feed had two large toggle switches mounted on the back of the center pedestal. By mistake, the PF reached back and inadvertently cut off the fuel flow. Could have been Surfing USA.
A protective semi-cover was later added to make the fuel toggles less exposed.
