What is the absolute farthest a 777-200LR can fly in a pax config with restrictions?

Sun May 28, 2017 10:13 pm

Hello A.net,

SQ was unique amongst airlines in that it had a special pax configuration for ULH routes as it had a weight penalty needed to make those routes work. With the advent of the 777-200LR, we now have a plane that has way more range than any airline currently uses. Before anyone flames me, I am more than aware that this has a snowball's chance in hell of happening, but it's more out of curiosity than anything else. Assuming a similar premium only config like SQ and a weight penalty, what's the closest a 77L could get to Boeing's advertised 13,422 miles on the record flight with a pax load? Specifically, would it be able to make a routing like ATL-PER or would that be pushing the range of even the 77L too far?

I would say a 77L could comfortably make LAX-PER in a premium-heavy (but still 3/4 class) config. Anything further is probsbly a stretch.

I think SYD-JFK eastbound may be possible, westbound not so much (considering SQ SIN-EWR was already "restricted" with only 100 seats).

Ai occasionally flies DEL to SFO direct....not great circle route to catch a westbound tailwind. They report the flight is 15,000km....the longest in the world.

How far the 77L can truly fly with a full load? I don't know but I would guess at least 8,000nm.

Qatar operates DOH-AKL, AKL DOH (daily, 77L). That's 9032 miles or 14535 km), considerably longer than SFO-DEL. Flight time is around typically about 16 hrs eastbound and 17 hrs 40 west bound although looking at actual sector times on flightaware over the past week you will see that on one occasion the AKl-DOH flight was 18 hrs 9 minutes!

DEL-SFO flies EASTWARD to take advantage of the tailwind, not West.

You are correct.....it was eastbound. And according to Air India the longest in the world non great circle. Here's the link.

I thought it flew eastward only seasonally. When DEL-SFO was first launched it was a westward route similar to DEL-JFK/ORD.

DEL-SFO would, more accurately, be described as NORTHWARD, followed by SOUTHWARD.

Back in 1986, when the Voyager flew around the world, I had similar questions. I wondered if fuel replaced all payload on any existing aircraft, if an around the world flight was possible. If it was, then the flight was not a technical challenge, just an economic one to make it happen.

With the state of engine technology back then, in restrospect, it almost certainly was not possible. Today I'm not so certain, but have no idea what the numbers would generate.

Cheers!

Boeing's payload/range chart should provide several answers:

Does premium heavy config result in weight reduction. You may be carrying fewer humans but, those F/J suites weigh a ton and galley cart requirement per F/J pax is way higher than avg Y passenger.

I was told by an EK skipper who was dead heading back from AKL that in EK config at a reduced MTOW, you could fill it with 8F 42J and 216Y, put 16 Tonnes of cargo on, and arrive back into DXB from AKL after 17hrs with 8 tonnes of fuel onboard.

Rumor has it a 777F with bladder tanks on the main deck and taking off over MTGW could theoretically make it. An engine failure on takeoff would be a bit of a problem however.
