That's wonderful news!! Congrats GMH...

Ha. Yeah, I thought it was going to be something like an American 757 to LHR.

Didn't DFW do something like this recently too? Huge announcement coming!!!! Then it's something like changing the catering company for the soda pop in the restaurants. :)

A frickin' 5K? Boy, ever since our previous mayor left office (the one who made getting more service/carriers at CMH a priority), things have been mundane at best. CVG is cleaning our clock with their re-dedication to expansion...while we make plans to run around a runway.

Oh well, I guess I can hope my home airport will get their act together in the near future.

I don't know how important the mayor is in getting new service, but CMH has to hit a home run with their new director. Whomever it is must put route expansion at the top of their list and be very aggressive in pursuing it.

It's not so much of the mayor being important, it's just that Mayor Coleman put a lot of effort into getting more cities/frequency into CMH. In his 16 years as mayor, he worked extensively on making Columbus a much more attractive city, which led to his last years being about bringing more service to CMH.

Mayor Ginther, on the other hand, is busy focusing on neighborhoods...and not the airport. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it's quite obvious that he's placing considerably less priority on the airport.

As for the new director, you're right. They need to get someone who is dedicated to taking CMH to the next level in bringing in new service, and expanding what is already there. CMH still has room to grow with its current layout...they just need to work on filling that space.

The great news for CMH just keeps growing and growing. Look for a mid-summer opening of a Sam Adams bar inside Concourse C to whet your whistle plus a new Donato's if you want some pizza to go with it. We may have shitty flight options, but at least we won't starve waiting on our connecting flight through ORD or ATL.

Donatos is an upgrade over Johnny Rockets. Be real nice if there were a new airline using C46, 47, or 49 to go along with it to take an individual Donatos pizza on, though.

Most of the kids on a.net local to CMH think an AA 757 would be the starting point to LHR, to be fair.

But if Austin frigging Texas can do it...

So, just to add even more comedy to this whole deal, VS is doing a flight from LGW to LCK today?

Which makes zero sense considering AA has no vested interest in nowheresville, Ohio nor do they have a strong track record of launching transatlantic routes from non-hub/non-focus cities.

But if Austin frigging Texas can do it...

Austin has a lot more going for it than Columbus, Ohio does, sorry.

At any rate, if BA were to launch another US city, I would think CMH would be pretty far down the list of potential candidates:

SAT
STL
BNA
PDX
BDL
MCI

Throw MSP, DET, and SLC in there too, if BA ever decides they want to go head to head at a fortress hub.

BA is not going to launch SAT when Austin is right up the road.

It would be really amazing to see a BA aircraft at Detroit City Airport. However, (1) the runway is much too short, and (2) DET's terminal does not have customs.

DTW, however, would be feasible, and I still think BA is likely to resume service there in the next few years.

On the plus side, this may be the longest running page one thread having to do with CMH in A Net history.

Anybody know if the Columbus community has been pooling funds for transatlantic? I have heard that some second-tier TATL carriers are very interested in opening up smaller US gateway cities if the revenue guarantees are there. I'm not sure carriers like British or Lufthansa are interested in that segment, but if someplace like Columbus ponied they might get Condor or WOW to readily jump in. The trick, of course is to gather the funds, particular when it is for something like lesser than (say) daily BA to LHR.

Really, "revenue guarantees" for overseas flights ? Does this actually occur anywhere?

Its quite common in second tier US cities. PIT-CDG and BDL-DUB for example both received heavy funding from private businesses in order to secure TATL flights
