FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Thanks as always Enilria.

PHX-STL x2? That's pretty low and caught my eye but there a quite a few PHX frequencies cut elsewhere as well. Even for September its getting pretty thin in some markets ex-PHX.

Thanks Enliria, always interesting. On another note, enliria you predicted not long ago when UA added the AUA stop to CCS, you predicted this might be the beginning of the end for that route. How right you were.

thanks Enliria, as usual.

At this pace, looks like AA's YYZ-LGA flights will be dropped sooner or later.

A broken clock is right twice per day! :)
But yeah, there are hints. The B6 BUF-LAX going non-daily is another, but I don't think anybody thought that would be very good.

I don't think anything AA flies with RJs at LGA is that great, so it's possible. I don't think AA's NYC strategy is very good.

What about AA's LAX-IAD going less than daily? LAX-MCI and LAX-OMA are taking a hit by AA as well. Could it be a matter of gate congestion that AA just can't absorb during construction or do you think these markets are on thin ice as well?

Yeah, that's pitiful in a transcon business market. I know it's SEP, but it will lose them some business travelers longer term.

Last year it was 3-5 daily (varying by day) at this time. Sometimes they add in flights later but, it may just be further reductions in the phx hub

Now that DL has successfully ran AC out of the SLC-YYZ market, I expect we'll see them drop the route again soon also.

LAX-IAD is somewhat superfluous for AA since it has 2x daily LAX-DCA, and with DL also now on LAX-DCA that may have sapped demand for IAD just a bit more.

Not surprised really - while the morning runs tend to be quite full, the mid day ones are empty and even the late night ones have few elites on them ( I've been on those flights where C+ is a ghost town and F might go out with an empty seat or two ).

ATL-CAK was a route served by up to 8x CR7s at one point - and has been around 4-5x M88/M90 for the past few years. I think this is probably the right number of seats for the market, and is DL trying to force more logical connections thru DTW ( which stays at 4x CRJ - for the stage length isn't a huge deal ). Net-net - CAK is looking at being more effective as a convenient business airport and less as a leisure focused airport.

For comparison, ATL-CLE is 8x M90 and DTW-CLE is 1x 717 and 4x CR7/9.

I think a lot of DL's CAK-ATL capacity was to be competitive with FL/WN. Yesterday was the final Southwest CAK-ATL flight so DL now has a monopoly route with lower capacity.

Not surprising AC dropped SLC. Was a matter of when, not if. Did that run for one or two years?

Ahh a nice slow death for two more PMUS routes

Time for B6 to add BOS-ROC. This will help them possible squeeze a subsidy out of ROC.

BOS-AUA - can't believe DL is not in this one yet

BOS-PAP - smart move lots of short VFR trips with the Tues/Sat schedule

BOS-UVF starting later 12/16 than the other seasonals. Maybe its to keep PAP running with 2 weekly.

Interesting cuts in PUJ especially in DEC along side a surprising increase in SXM (appears to be daily from 12/21 to 1/3) then goes to 3 weekly (2 Sat and 1 Sun). Seems like they want to protect SXM and not compete with DL (who is going daily for the holidays) and to a lesser extent AA on PUJ

BOS-PLS - weather can be spotty in Jan.

It's not surprising AC is cutting YYZ-SLC. But, DL only has one flight a day, so I could possibly see them drop it...even though it is run with just an A319. I'm pleased to see the jetBlue reductions in SLC, though.

haha we will have to wait and see i was thinking the same exact thing! Delta gets the o&d anyway on this route anyway they could pull again and do the same thing. IIRC delta pulled pretty fast last time they ran them out of SLC. I get why AC went back, the numbers are truly there for it to work with all the connection power in YYZ, the problem is that the force is strong in SLC and Delta did respond immediately. AC was probably just hoping they could sneak in there with an addition since its an un-served route that would work without Delta. Delta not only price matches on the non-stop but also have seen MSP and DTW even cheaper too to load cheap seats into the market.

So recent history AC re-launches YYZ Delta responds immediately in next OAG with their own SLC-YYZ route. B6 launches SLC-BOS redeye, DL adds a redeye. B6 adds MCO redeye delta adds their own additional redeye, B6 adds FLL delta moves route from MIA to FLL. Delta is clearly out to protect its turf. They don't like seeing other airlines get comfy in their very profitable fortress hub. The force is still strong in SLC, deltas message is basically add with caution people.

A while back I was finding one-ways on DL via ATL (the 830AM 763) to YYZ for as low as $198. It's not surprising AC cut and run with DL protecting what's theirs. I just wish they'd do the same thing against AS in SLC. I'd love to see them pull up shop.

I can't see AA dropping this route. AA's strategy at LGA, while a mixed bag, has been to ensure service (within perimeter) to key business locations so YYZ is a must. That said, I was stunned recently to learn this is back to all E145 crappy planes, so AA does seem weak on the route. Still, dropping it seems a bad idea.

Reading these threads each week, it seems to me that AA has been cutting 1 frequency out of many routes from CLT/PHL/PHX for some time now. Obviously, these are old US cities. My question is, are they putting the aircraft that would normally fly these frequencies onto different routes, or are they just parking them RON and having less fleet capacity utilization? I don't really see large across the board adds to the ORD and DFW schedules, but maybe I'm misssing something? Not a huge day to day follower of AA, so if I've missed the obvious, go easy on me, ok?

It's SLC not SCL; but don't worry, you are not alone confusing both. I've heard horror stories about luggage destined for one and ending up at the other.

Re: AC breaking up SCL and EZE and making each a non stop flight, I understand that is the plan, but not before 2018-19.

The frequency drop for AA DFW-GSP is due to the market switches from Eagle to mainline on Aug 22. AA did this in Apr and May as well but switched it back to Eagle on Jun 2.

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm curious as to why you are wishing for the failure of other carriers at SLC? I know how terrible it is for consumers when airlines compete against each other and there are more choices at lower fares.

So frustrating seeing airline after airline unable to sustain NYC-TUS service. B6 tried and failed, CO tried and failed from EWR, and now AA. Clearly not enough pax willing to pay the premium to fly this route non-stop. Besides DL, I'm not sure who is left to give this route a go.

What about AA's LAX-IAD going less than daily? LAX-MCI and LAX-OMA are taking a hit by AA as well. Could it be a matter of gate congestion that AA just can't absorb during construction or do you think these markets are on thin ice as well?

Construction has to be playing a roll. The experience at LAX last summer was awful I try to put 10 pounds into a 5 pound bag. Growing against faces then you have the time in the operations are ready to go

There's a term used around here called "fan boys". It refers to those who won't tolerate any criticism of their preferred airline/airport/aircraft because they relentlessly adore it and believe it is the best in all ways. Any criticisms are considered an affront to their personal identity. You see similar attitudes with people and their favourite sports teams.

Some of the PHL cuts are a product of the inconsistent plan for 50-70 RJ's. Many PHL markets see an increase of frequency only to see a decrease in gauge but then see the reverse a few months later (one of the extreme examples...PHL-RDU has been RJ's for years, this fall there will be 2x 319's). Also with the DH8's leaving the fleet, many PHL markets have seen a decrease in frequency but an increase in gauge DH8>145.

I haven't looked into it much for other hubs, but I've noticed a number of 738's entering PHL. PHL-SAN/BOS/LAX/DEN/SLC/SJU/CUN/AUA have all see more and more 738's and they are generally a downgauge from 321's.

AA drops JFK-TUS! Most cities the size of TUS do not have flights to JFK when a large hub is a short flight away like PHX. B6 tried a red eye years agouti JFK; CO attempted EWR; US had Charlotte seasonal service; UA ran a tag to Washington, DC through PHX. ORD, MDW, ATL and MSP are the most long range flights that make out of TUS.

No offense to the JetBlue lovers out there, but B6 runs some of the weirdest routes in the country (ex. ANC-PDX/SEA and BUF-LAX) and doesn't have flights to HNL, SNA, STL, MCI, SAT, MSP, and IND just to name a few. Not to mention the fact that they don't have TATL service yet, when two of their hubs are both the ideally placed for TATL service, but that is a discussion for another thread.

Isn't that seasonal? It's been so before and its listed as such in Wiki.

It was loaded and now it isn't. Also, quick drop timeframe.

The B6 BUF-LAX going non-daily is another, but I don't think anybody thought that would be very good.

BUF just sucks I'm sure.

At least airlines keep trying it! Hope springs eternal.

BUF-LAX was pretty much less than daily all winter this year. I'm not sure where the link to the article is, but the head of the airport mentioned the route is performing well.

The glory days in CAK seem to be unwinding
*DL ATL-CAK SEP 4>3 OCT 4>3 NOV 4>3

Yes - very true. But I think it speaks to the overall decline of leisure travel at CAK now that CLE is price competitive.

This always struck me as kind of an oddball route for JetBlue .... what was the logic behind starting this one ?

No offense to the JetBlue lovers out there, but B6 runs some of the weirdest routes in the country (ex. ANC-PDX/SEA and BUF-LAX) and doesn't have flights to HNL, SNA, STL, MCI, SAT, MSP, and IND just to name a few. Not to mention the fact that they don't have TATL service yet, when two of their hubs are both the ideally placed for TATL service, but that is a discussion for another thread.

What is so strange about ANC-SEA? B6 runs one of 27 daily nonstops between the two cities.

July 15th seems like an odd time to end a seasonal route.
As we celebrate mediocrity, all the boys upstairs want to see, how much you'll pay for what you used to get for free.

Because it is a p2p flight and B6 doesn't have a hub in either of those cities. 27 daily nonstops????? First of all that isn't possible, B6 in BOS-JFK only has 6 daily nonstops, so how would SEA-ANC has 27????

The poster means, all of the airlines combined have 27 dailies on SEA-ANC with AS of course being the dominant carrier.

So I checked and B6's BUF-LAX is operating on x246 this winter. I think that's the same as last winter. It's interesting to note that on days 246 without a nonstop, the lowest available fare is $114 higher than the nonstop.

He's saying that B6's sole flight is among all of the Alaska and Delta flights on the route.. Not that B6 has 27x daily frequency on ANC-PDX/SEA.
