As I wrote elsewhere:

I will be flying LAX-DTW on 9/5 and I noticed the 744 as an option a couple weeks ago. I've been debating whether or not to book this flight -- the other redeye is better timed for me and will save a few bucks; I'd be sorely disappointed if this flight changed to a 737/757.

What's strange is that you cannot select a seat assignment, although somebody who did book themselves onto this flight reported one was assigned to them (they cannot change it). I heavily suspect that this is the retirement flight of N662US, which is scheduled to end service that day after 29-years with NW/DL, and the seats are being blocked for employees.
We don’t care what your next flight is.

Is this the final 747 flight for Delta? Or do they continue for months after this?

No; currently, the last scheduled flight is December 17, ICN-DTW. Currently, seven frames remain - two are scheduled for retirement during Labor Day weekend whereas the other 5 will be phased out in December.

Hawaii / Japan 747 service ends September 5; this is probably part of the journey to get it "home." There's a poop ton of seats blocked on the LAX-DTW flight -- I ponder if it's routing NRT-LAX (not open to the public) - DTW (a handful of seats open to the public)?

Just looked on DL's website, and they're all blocked off to be precise.

This would be my best guess too as I haven't heard of DL using the 744 for NFL charters.

I have no idea what your routing is, and obviously prices are different for everyone, but I just searched LAX-DTW 9-5 under "pay with miles" and the 744 flight was only 11000 miles, (tied for) the least of any of the flights that day fwiw.
Edit: I also have no idea if you're a skymiles member, but now it's out there if anyone is interested. :D

And the DL site doesn't show an F fare available at all.

Actually, an F fare is not available because they are all sold out. The Diamond Medallion Facebook group is having a meetup for this special flight and booked out the entire cabin. :)

It is not a special retirement flight for employees.

No, the Facebook group didn't buy out all 48 First Class seats.

And I didn't suggest it's a special retirement flight for employees, but rather I speculated blocks of seats may be withheld for employees.
- I've skimmed through thousands of seat maps through the years (including domestic 744 flights; e.g. the DTW-SEA flight that operated earlier this year) and this is the very first instance that I can recall in which DL blocked seat selection for the entire cabin, instead randomly assigning seats upon booking.

- The flight's almost undoubtedly related to bringing the 744 operating NRT-HNL "home." Labor Day Weekend isn't exactly peak travel for t-pac -- DL could've just as easily cancelled a DTW-NRT inbound flight, then operated the aircraft NRT-DTW). Other scenarios would've played out better than this one, which -- at this point -- appears to have the 744 operating non-revenue NRT-LAX then a redeye (not exactly the most desired time of day) LAX-DTW.
We don’t care what your next flight is.

My guess is that DL is just offering seats on this aircraft. More than likely it's just a repositioning flight and well...they may as well make a few $$$ from it.
Remind me to send a thank you note to Mr. Boeing.

I'm not sure if DL uses the 747 for NFL Charters anymore, but they used too, as we had a DL 744 bring in the IND Colts to DEN a couple years ago.

O it could be that a huge group of DL platinums and diamonds have booked on to this flight and more are jumping on and let me say sorry now as this is turning into a party flight.

Edit : I'm on a tablet right now and quoting multiple posts is a pain, but yes, the Facebook group is having a little get together on this flight, I would be surprised if there are any Delta one seats left as the price wasn't to bad for cash and there were plenty of seats open for miles.

Booked and got allocated an aisle, not letting me change it either. Perhaps locked seating chart as aircraft subject to change? Better not be but factored that in when I booked....

I'm very tempted to book this (when I get paid) but seeing as I would make this trip solely for the 747 I'd be highly out of luck/disappointed if there is an aircraft change.

That wouldn't be a good idea on DL's part.

I think they are in the loop with the fact that a great number of their big spend customers have booked this flight and would not be happy about an equipment change.....of course subject to nothing mechanical.....Though I will say if there is an equipment change there will be a whole lot of cancellations.

I remain skeptical that 48 F seats were sold within a matter of hours.

I actually have to fly a redeye LAX-DTW on September 5. There's two redeyes -- if the latter was guaranteed to be a 744, I'd take it, otherwise the earlier one works out better (it enables me to see my kids off to school). I'm leaning toward purchasing the earlier flight, since I'm not confident in the 747. I'm sure many road warriors would agree.

It's not sold out, every seat in Y is unavailable until you book, they've simply locked out the seating charts.

As far as I know all 48 seats are sold, someone at DL should be able to confirm one way or another.

The Diamond Medallion FB group has over 2,000 members, once they got word of the flight, it's not inconceivable that 48 of them booked F seats. I can't think of any other reason DL would be selling Y and Y+ seats but not F, unless they're blocking them for employees.
I also just don't see a reason DL would have loaded this flight into their res system as a 744 if they intend on subbing it for a more mundane type. I wonder if there are any DL employees on here that know anything about this flight who could shed more light, that would be helpful.

The upgrade/standby list within the app shows the number of seats remaining in each class for flights you're ticketed for. More details are added once you check-in.

Interesting coincidence that the last commercial 747 flight for both UA & DL originates in ICN: one to SFO and the other to DTW - albeit with a couple of months' difference.

DL 1352 is a regular daily redeye, though usually it's with a 739 and occasionally a 752.

I booked it because I've only flown on a 747 once before (the 744 from DTW-SEA that ran one day last September, managed to snare a first-class upstairs seat that time), live in Socal, have family in the Detroit area, have the miles which I probably won't use anytime soon anyway (I'm primarily a Southwest passenger), and this falls during a period when I have no teaching obligations at the university so I may as well take advantage of it. I got seat 40C, but I'd prefer a window seat; I wonder if I'd have any luck cancelling during the 24-hour window and rebooking.

Interestingly,flightmapper.net lists it as a 753.

I'm assuming flightmapper pulls its info from a GDS.

Class: Available for purchase / Unassigned
F: 0 / 2
Y: 212 / 250

NRT-HNL does operate as a 744 this day. Assuming it eventually ferries up to LAX (surprised they aren't putting it on a revenue flight).

Routing for this segment shows as follows

DL 576 NRT-HNL 9/5
DL 1284 HNL-LAX 9/5
DL 1352 LAX-DTW 9/5

DL is now offering tickets on the HNL-LAX segment which solves the mystery of where this flight is coming from.

9/5 is the final day of HNL-NRT 744 service in addition to the currently last scheduled day of service for N662US
This also leaves all remaining 744 to be based out of DTW.
DL 1284 and 1352 are almost certainly repositioning flights to DTW to move the HNL-NRT frame to DTW via LAX to replace N662US for the last couple of months of DTW to NRT/ICN/PVG service
Somewhat creative planning to use the 744 instead of usually scheduled 757 service on flights 1284 and 1352 that day.
Unless DL or UA goes out of their way to do something special this will most likely be the final domestic 744 flight by a US carrier.

Still a mystery why DL is blocking seat assignments on these flights but plenty of seats currently available on both HNL-LAX and LAX-DTW

Has anyone managed to get a window seat? Talked to res and airport staff and no one can change my seat. More than a little bummed to be in an aisle seat.

I'm ticketed on this flight too and was worried about this as well, when I called reservations I was told that the reason the seat assignment is unavailable is "because the seat assignment is under control of the airport for this flight" It's interesting you say you called the airport and they said they can't help you, but I should also add that the reservations agent I spoke to, specified that I would need to talk to a gate agent when I am actually there at the gate to get on that flight.

I must say I am more than a little bit concerned about getting a window seat as well - not only that but my fiance, dad, and a coworker are also going with me and it randomly assigned us all seats that are nowhere near each other with one thing in common - All of our seats are in the center column of seats on the map, none of them are outboard of the aisles. This corresponds with what I'm reading from other people.

That would really suck if we all had to keep our currently assigned seats....

Update: Wnt to Delta's counter and was able to switch to a window seat with no problem. My advice, drive to your local airport and makenthe request there.

I remain skeptical that 48 F seats were sold within a matter of hours

Actually we DDMF purchased the entire F cabin in a matter of minutes. I personally learned the day before it was loaded. Called and set it up! So yes. Two people remain without seat assignments because they are unsure if attending. Entire cabin is sold. Be warned. There is a closed party on the upper deck... it will be Loud.
