AA repaints N951AA 737-823 retro jet

Sat Jun 10, 2017 1:07 am

I thought American Airlines would keep the retro Astrojet paint job on N951AA.But it has been repainted in the current paint job.The Boeing 757 that was painted in a retro paint job Is that 757 still in the fleet or has it been retired,My only question is with all the other retro jets in AAs fleet why did they repaint the retro Astrojet 737.

Not sure if you've read the AA Fleet Repaint thread but the new retrojet is now 905NN, 951AA is getting up there in age and won't be around as long.

Fantastic they are keeping an Astro Jet, now are they keeping an aircraft (presumably a 737) in the former livery?

Aircraft 5EL (N679AN) is still in active service and has not yet been repainted into the new colors.

I would be shocked if they didn't, considering that they kept 838 in HP colors and 578 in US colors.

The last aircraft delivered in the bare metal scheme was 3KG (N921NN).

N951AN is an old unit, approaching 20! It's perfectly within the realm of possibility that the first -800s will be leaving service within the decade.

N905NN ensures the livery will be enjoyed for many years!

Not for long. Anything that is unpainted at this point, besides the 738, is being retired in the immediate future, 679 is one of those.

I want a clAAsic retro jet! Hopefully not on grey, but with the New American logo in place of the text.

Maybe on a MAX 8! It'd look slick!

I remember back when the newly merged AA/US did their livery vote that regardless of the outcome, 1 aircraft would always remain in the classic AA livery as part of the heritage fleet. Would only make sense that it's a 738 to keep the bare metal.

I miss that retro scheme. Personally, I think the 757 - especially pre-winglets - looks good in almost any livery ever, but it was always particularly awesome to see that 757 taxi by and I always thought that retro scheme in particular always looked so cool and fit the dimensions of the 757 so well. I remember when they rolled that out in January 1999 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first nonstop transcontinental jet service and concurrent with the JFK terminal announcement.

That would be cool. But I don't see that happening anytime soon, at least not within the next ten years, because the clAAssic AA livery is still too recent. Note that some of the 738s, although not too many of them, are still wearing the old livery.
A 737-8MAX or an A321NEO repainted in a US Air retro scheme, 80s three tone rust scheme, early 90s blue/red cheat line on silver or late 90s/early 2000s US Airways navy blue scheme, that I see happening. Just like they did with three of their 738s, N915AN, N916AN and N917AN for Reno Air, TWA and Air Cal respectively.

5EL was a sight, indeed. Wasn't it the first retro themed livery? It would be great to see this scheme resurrected and the jet preserved, especially with the rapid retirement of the 757s by AA. Oh well, a guy can dream.

I wouldn't hold my breath. I think we are lucky they repainted the Astrojet livery, that is probably because there are still plenty of jets in the old AA livery. The retrojet of America West's first livery (painted because at the time there were plenty of HP livery planes left to repainted) did not survive the merge.

I believe that, around the time of the merger, AA stated their intention to keep one 737 in the Silverbird scheme. Plans might have changed, however.

AA said they're going to keep a plane in the pre-2013 livery.

AA couldn't keep that livery due to licensing issues. They don't own the rights to it and would've had to pay to fly it.

The "Jurassic Park' retro livery was also kept, so there is still an AW retro jet in the fleet.
