I guess all those nervous golf games that Boeing was apparently having with UA or whatever according to Keesje paid off. Do you think the one scheduled next week is still going to occur?

Also I'm not sure that it is UA's entire 737-9 order. Remember that they have 61 Maxs from the 73G deal, which appears to have been ordered under Unidentified back in December the same time as their 73Gs were cancelled. Swapping the entire -9 order means a ~3 year gap with basically no new domestic mainline narrowbodies coming in, since they were suppose to get their first 737-9 next year. My guess it is that 61 plane order + the last 40 737-9s that probably would have been delivered after 2021 anyways.

This has been a great show for Boeing and we are only on day 2. All the naysayers are shocked at how well the 737 MAX-10 has done so far, always shooting it down, yada yada. You are going to find that it really holds its own against the A321NEO. It will very efficiently move people from coast to coast in the USA and similar distances across the globe. I'm fairly certain it will be a much bigger success than most on here thought it would be.

Just saw an announcement of United purchasing up to 100 737-10 Maxes.

It will certainly make the A321-neo more humble, but the way I say it is that Airbus knew that what they got doesn't have a competitor, hence having the upper hand when it comes to price negotiations. Airliners pushed boeing to develop the 10 to restore balance to the market. Boeing went ahead after it gathered enough convening launch orders. What drove me to this conclusion is that a significant part of the orders so far are by leasing companies who had expressed their annoyance with A321-neo pricing. Whether it's gonna be a success is too early to tell, the specifics of the trailing wheel addition and weight figures are yet to be seen!

United still has those to 737 MAX converted 73G orders. But we don't know if these 61 planes are MAX 8s or MAX9s, am I right?

They never specified, and Boeing doesn't break down variants on the 737MAX. At the time the conversion Boeing was probably starting to float the idea of a 737-10 to better compete with the A321 to customers like UA, so UA likely knew there was a good chance something new was coming hence why no decision on the variant was ever announced.

Good point. It would be nice if we can see what the breakdown of the original 100x 737-MAX9 and 61 737-MAXtba will be after the conversion. UA still needs new narrowbodies the next couple of years. I can see them replace 752s with 7M9's until 2020, UA will probably keep their aircraft until they fall apart so resale won't be the biggest issue for them.

Unless of course UA decides to halt 752 retirement and start replacing the A320 with 737-MAX8s (from their 737MAXtba order).

The top up order of 77W's should enable UA to complete their 744 replacement. And will surely fuel more speculation regarding the future of their A350-1000 order.

so, net orders for Boeing are around 170 (including B787s)

Airbus already has 202 genuine new orders.

They have not swapped entire MAX 9 for MAX 10. They currently have 161 MAX's on order with 100 swapped giving a net now of 100 MAX10 and 61 MAX 9 on order. (The other MAX order was a swap from B73G)

UA never disclosed the breakdown for the B73G swap. But the original MAX 9 order is completely gone.

I do agree. They will take MAX 9s oder MAX 8s. The 320s don't get any younger and since there are no 320neos on the horizon (or even the possibility to get some in the next few years) UA will operate at least one otherMAX model besides the MAX 10.

Same thing applies to DL btw and they haven't ordered any MAX or neo yet. Maybe they'll get some nicely used 738s or 320s.

It is still early days yet - most of the firm orders are conversions from previous Max 8 and Max 9 orders. The rest are just commitments, MOUs or LOIs.

What is certain is that Boeing needed the Max 10 badly because of the lack of success of the Max 9. On that front, it would appear that the Max 10 is well on the way to achieving its main objective.

That requires us to have a firm understanding of just how many 737-9s there are on order in the first place. The answer to that question is difficult, as Boeing does not break down 737MAX variants on their website, and not all customers specify in their PR the exact variants with their amounts when they order planes.

I would be patient with the 777X. The Vistara rumor may hold true, as the owner of the airline is there, but if it doesn't, I'm not going to worry.

When everyone said UA could very likely order more 77W's they said no way. 3 months ago. Plus the MAX 10 conversion is the second most predictable thing in the show, just behind the launch of the MAX 10

I must admit I'm shocked at the number of orders the Max 10's have secured so far,
but the airlines must like the numbers they've seen from the flight test program.

Congrats to Boeing. Now if UA would have a new livery ready to apply
when these new Max 10's arrive :)

I would think so. As another poster mentioned, the gap between RJs and the MAX9s and 10s is huge. I just can't see the US3 not having new aircraft going to fill in there.

Boeing touches on the "797" and even teases with an image!

keesje must be crying into his beer right now.

I eagerly await the spin. UA was probably forced to do the conversion (after all, the small stretch 737-10 is of no interest to an airline like UA) because Boeing no longer wants to make 737-9s in the future so they paid money for UA to convert. UA (an airline that keeps planes until they run them into the ground) is also of course incredibly vain and concerned about other airline's orders so they converted since everyone else was doing so and they did not want to seem out of the loop. Guys at Toulouse are currently scheduling what will be an uncomfortable golf game with UA execs for next week.

Looks great! Like a smaller 787 with different shaped engines. Congrats Boeing with all these orders on day 2.

Edit: Guys, please stop making potshots at Keesje. I like his contributions to these forums, and he's one of very few who actually makes them interesting.

It's alright, as long as the fly doesn't drop in it. Seems the MadMAX has gone really mad.....

Assuming that image is more or less to scale, it looks like they're going for a single aisle after all!

I swear that is a 757 Max, or at least it looks 757-ish.

Well, since it will be occupying the space left by the 757-300 and 767-200, its going to have to have a lot of their proportions...

I hope that teaser is just a quick sketch because that looks very ill-proportioned and old... I would have hoped a more dreamliner-esque fuselage would be used.

I'm quite certain it's just a generic design with a nod to the 757 perhaps. In other words, a slot holder drawing.

MAX’d out on MAX threads. If you are starting a thread, and it’s about the MAX - stop. There’s already a thread that covers it.

This has been a great show for Boeing and we are only on day 2.

Only? As far as orders go the first 2 days are usually it. I'm not expecting any significant orders tomorrow and absolutely none on Thursday but would like to be proven wrong.

I must admit I'm shocked at the number of orders the Max 10's have secured so far,

Have you looked at the A321 order book? The only shocking thing is that it took Bowing so long to offer it. The 10 will sell very well.
