Air Mauritius - 50 years old

Tue Jun 13, 2017 12:50 pm

Thought it would be worth noting that tomorrow (14/06/17) will mark the 50th anniversary of Air Mauritius.

Given the number of African carriers that have gone to the wall over the years. Its not a bad innings for a small carrier in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Growing older, but not up.

The way I see it Mauritius is more comparable to a Caribbean island than to an African nation. Big difference is their location which means an orientation to Asia, Australia, and South Africa and not to North America. Its long distance from Europe reduces the level of competition from major carriers, though the arrival of the ME3 clearly changes the competitive environment.

Just to note that both LH (FRA-MRU 3x/week) and KL/MK (AMS-MRU 3x/week) are new Europe-Mauritius routes in 2017, while Condor (3x), AF (7x), BA (5x), OS (2x), LX (2x) have been operating from/to Europe from MRU for years, in addition to Air Mauritius' own services from MRU to CDG (7x), LHR (4x).

So significant NEW non-stop competition for the ME3.

Would love to see MK back in MEL, even seasonally, there is definately a market for non stop flights. They did try, however I think they will be able to capture a large VFR market operating during the December/January peak.
A world built upon connectivity.

Won't happen, tried both there and Sydney
They have just increased Perth flights to three times weekly with good connections with Virgin Australia

I'm very excited to see how MK's new A350' work out.

Some of their A340's are getting very, VERY, tired in the Y cabin.

Even their A330s seem to be taking a bit of a pounding.

My last flight from PER with them, my tray table didn't have a latch and was attached with duct tape, and the window shade was stuck in the open position, no matter who tried to get it down.

I mean, obviously there are other little things but I guess that's what happens when an aircraft is busy shuttling holiday makers to and from (what is almost say) is paradise!

On the plus side, service is always exemplary, and their route network is really quite excellent, especially for connections from Southern Africa to Asia.

Congrats to them!
Durban. Melbourne. Denver. Hong Kong.

MK have plans to refurbish their entire fleet by 2018.

Looks like the staff had a jolly good night out at the 50th Birthday party.

Also they've added a special livery to some of their planes:

Interestingly, 2 of the A340's are going to get a cabin refurbishment according to this article:

Moreover, the cabins of two A340, two A330 and two A319 will also undergo refurbishment leading to an alignment of the standard of equipment across the fleet.
