Reason FR move from GRO/REU to BCN ?

Sun Jun 18, 2017 3:06 pm

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering why FR has moved his operations from GRO to BCN and same from REU to BCN.
Obviously BCN is where mainly of the passengers of those lines wanted to go but is this the only one reason of this move ?

Does BCN fees where attractive with the old terminal (the actual bcn Low cost terminal) that convives FR to make this move ?

Does REU or GRO stopped giving "marketing support" to FR and then FR decided to move to BCN ?

Or is this a Mix of all those reason ?

It's interesting that they no longer think it's worth operating to the "holiday airports". I would've thought there was plenty of money to be made...

In my humble opinion, FR is changing their game, they're becoming more mainstream!

Ryanair operation into and around the castilian region are driven by demand and all three airports create differing traffic flows

Gerona remains heavily used by Ryanair bringing tourists to Loret De Mar and right up and across the French border .
Reus remains to entry for Salou and surroundings

Barcelona is used for an extensive Spanish domestic operation tapping business and leisure market in direct competition with IBERIA/VUELING and others and for connecting to major northern European business cities .

The passenger profile of each airport operations really do differ and Ryanair is a company that makes the most of these differences for profit.

Their business model flexibility which includes virtually zero hour contracts for crewing allows each route to operate totally independently. No legacy mega crew bases to feed through hubbing etc....

Ryanair has not left REU/GRO, they just reduced ops there and move routes to BCN.

In fact some airports like STN or CRL are connected to all three.

Catalan, actually.

But in other areas in Europe, Ryanair also moved some operations from secondary airports to more mainstream ones, such as CRL to BRU or HHN to FRA, and I suspect that was the same move as GRO/REU to BCN.

So, in the actual Castilian region, Ryanair operates in VLL and also operated in CQM, as secondary airports, and eventually opened a base in MAD.

They won't entirely leave Girona and Reus, but they are shifting some flights to Barcelona because there's more demand for Barcelona than there is for Reus and Girona. Also, Barcelona is a year-round destination where Girona and Reus are far more popular in the summer than they are in the winter.

That might be one of the side reasons, but I doubt it's the main reason.

The original Terminal at BCN has not been converted into a LCC terminal, it remains the same as it was when it was the only terminal at the airport but is now predominantly used by LCC carriers, it wasn't converted for them.

I don't think you understand how Ryanair is gradually moving from secondary airports into mainstream airports such as BCN and still keeping a presence at the former.
