BOS has runway construction issues, plus storms headed their way. (this is not going to be a fun recovery)

DL has 9 either already in or headed to BOS, with another 15-20 going to other airports. PVD got AGP-JFK, and it looks like there's more to come. Diverting as far south as RDU and as far west as MSP.

I got in from LAX around 2:30PM, we had to go around a lot of weather over Virginia, descent into EWR was quite bumpy, although no storms yet at the time over EWR.

For DL270---does TF Green have customs facilities to process those passengers? It will be a fun night and tomorrow with so many planes out of position.

Except for the fact that the airspace in the Mid Atlantic and Northeast has significantly more traffic to manage with a lot less space to work airplanes! One issue just compounds on another, and next thing you know, airplanes end up holding from New Jersey to South Carolina. The front that moved through today was pretty severe and affected ops from about New York to North Carolina, so it made for a pretty interesting day for a lot of people.

I saw earlier UA85 from TLV was diverting to BOS, but it shows both JFK and BOS on FlightAware... anyone know where she finally ended up? Pretty sure that crew timed out!

I took quite a few screenshots of crazy flight paths on FlightRadar24. Days like this are always interesting to watch. Especially when the TV in the doctors office is showing some soap opera.

I'm baffled as to how BOS can/could handle all of these diversions. Not only due to the runway construction, but also the lack of apron space and gates at the international terminal.

I was optimistic for some international diversion up here in Maine. Although weather wasn't much better.

Only flight was

JBU1528 POP-JFK diverted to BGR.

Assume the crew timed out? Aircraft arrived at 7:50 PM and hasn't yet departed. Another jet was flown up from JFK at 2:00am, and immediately returned to JFK before dawn.

For SYR: there was also a Delta flight B739 from SLC going to Boston and it stopped in SYR.

My guess is that some parked on runways (e.g. 4L/22R, as I believe ops were on 15R/33L and 9/27 during this time).

Surprised that none went to BGR. Sure, it's out of the way, but they have customs officials on hand IIRC and a lot more space.

I don't know much about apron space, but I share some of your amazement. While BOS is a pretty ideal diversion location normally, with the runway construction delays (and the storms headed for BOS), I knew some of those flights were in for lengthy BOS visits.

Bangor might have made sense but the storms were marching in their direction and planes might have been worse off there. Same with MHT. Listening to the radio chatter the controllers were asking each flight whether they were a diversion. In the majority of cases planes that were had to sit and stew. One AA 767-300 from MIA actually was given a gate, and I believe one Shamrock one was, too. And the whole congestion issue really came to the fore when BA 45B (the A380) had to squeeze himself between all the transients to get out.

AA 64 from Miami

I was on that one yesterday. I stayed overnight in BOS, I slept in the terminal! I flew on a 767-323ER, registered N391AA, yesterday Monday from MIA to BOS. After holding for a while on the coast of New Jersey, the captain decided to proceed to BOS as thunderstorms were coming close to JFK. When we left the hold, he was not saying anything on the PA but instead of continuing descending he increased power and we climbed, I knew at that point we were not going to JFK. It was obvious we were diverting. Then he announced BOS.
After staying overnight in Terminal B, I flew back this morning Tuesday to JFK on the same aircraft N391AA and same flight number AA 64. We had already left MIA an hour late.

Yes BOS was a zoo last night.

I've been at MDW, trying to get to EWR for 20 hours and counting (arrived last night from BNA). WN says the next confirmed seat available is at 1030 pm tomorrow, and every flight today was full or overbooked and couldn't take any stanbys from two canceled flights yesterday and one this morning. Total zoo.
