Anyone know why Air France/HOP! are ending their GLA-CDG route?

Wed Jun 21, 2017 4:06 pm

According to Wikipedia (yes, I know it's not always right), it's ending on the 28th October 2017 - anyone know why? Poor loads?

Could be that Flybe may take it over. They operate several UK routes to Paris and codeshare with Air France.

Bear in mind that easyJet is also on that route with a daily flight, providing tough competition with their 156-seat A319s. HOP!, operated by Régional, seems unable to make money using their 100-seat Embraer 190s.

IMO they should have persisted longer and actually increased frequency. 2-3 times daily timed for connections would have been targetting a different market to EZY. They could have evened out the KL AF AMS frequency to increase capacity overall and stop everyone routing through the highly successful AMS route.
It certainly wasnt for lots of advertising as there was plenty.
Perhaps Ryanair will offer a Paris service as they can really boost a route as seen with GLA-Berlin
Disappointing as nice to have a mainline legacy carrier. Odd that other routes easily support AF even with competition

That doesn't seem terribly logical. If 2/3 daily flights timed for connections (presumably at the Paris end, not with Loganair) are what would make the route viable, why welcome Ryanair, who will offer at best one daily flight and no connections at all? And why would AF-KLM want to divert traffic away from Amsterdam to Paris, when they already have the traffic anyway at Amsterdam, and the KLM part of the business tends to have lower operating costs?

illogical where its only about profits. It is logical to wish to promote inbound and outbound growth (which FR can provide). And as im sure you are aware often these (low cost and long haul connecting)are completely different /seperate markets. I would think it also logical to give the flying public enhanced connection opportunities that are offered from CDG and not AMS without further connection. AF/KL already share in the transfer of pax over these routes so why not adjust to make their efforts/advertising and input more viable? Nothing illogical there.

They would be going for different type of passengers. HOP! is their to provide a link to Air Frances long haul services. KLM go head to head with LCCs to AMS at many airports with the same type of aircraft and it doesn't effect them.

That's only partly true as there is certainly an O&D market between GLA and PAR which HOP! isn't getting enough of. Furthermore, for tickets sold with a connection at CDG, the GLA-CDG or CDG-GLA sector must still make money from the allocation of trip revenue, otherwise the long-haul sector of the trip suffers diluted yield.

The once a day early morning schedule was never going to win friends and gain influence. Air France could really take a leaf out of KLM's book in terms of how to run spoke and hub services successfully. Maybe one for Loganair... ;-)

Air France and KLM are different in many ways, in the fact that KLM does really well in regional markets compared to Air France. For example, regional routes in the UK, Norway, etc do really well for KLM. Air France flies to less regional cities and KLM can handle Glasgow better. Just a point to add.

This is the 3rd time AF have dropped GLA-CDG, it's their own home base as well. Shows the difference between the GLA and EDI home markets as well IMHO.
Glasgow is still outbound sunshine whereas EDI can do inbound tourism at levels GLA cannot.

I still believe an extremely dominant EK is not doing GLA's chances of alternative hub routes any good at all. Of course that is only part of the story though.

The overlap of useful AF network (particularly Euro, African and Westbound) and practical EK connections from DXB I would imagine are narrow.
