COPA adds its fourth destination in Argentina, Mendoza MDZ

Mon Jun 26, 2017 11:00 pm

Beginning Nov. 16th, COPA will offer a 4x w nonstop service from PTY to MDZ. This new service is possible thanks to the new bilateral between both countries. Schedule is as follows:

CM420 PTY 15:40 MDZ 00:21+1 1357 738
CM421 MDZ 01:34 PTY 06:30 1246 738

In the coming days COPA is expected to announce its third daily nonstop to Buenos Aires, up from the current 17x w to 21x w.

Not even remotely surprised. Copa is the Emirates of the Americas. Give it 10 years and Copa might be serving every secondary and many tertiary cities in Latin América and the US/Canada

Well Vancouver will have to wait for the MAX, and even then it'll probably be restricted. YVR would be the longest non stop route from PTY.

Well for COPA's sake. here's hoping it does not get the sniffles that Emirates is now feeling.

Back to COPA in Argentina, word on the airline circles is that because COPA still has unused frequencies under the new bilateral, a second daily PTY-COR is in the works.

Still a ton of mid size destinations left for them to link into their system. PBM, MID, BGI, SAT, AUS all come to mind

Great news for MDZ and CM.
Hopefully Argentine cities like SLA and TUC could soon get PTY flights also.
I'm not on CM's payroll.

Possibly in the mid term future. At this point in time CM has said that they are interested in service augmentation to both EZE & COR in the near term. So that means a third daily to EZE and a second, day time daily to COR.

Their hub airport does not have the ability to remotely match anything like DXB. PTY is pretty tight as is (and will be even with the terminal expansion), and it's a pretty long flight from a lot of places in the US. Yes, the 737 can do it, and the MAX will do it even better, but the business case for further expansion into smaller markets in the US and Canada may be dicey given stage length and the unknown direction of future fuel costs. And the business model really only works if they can find sufficient feed on both sides of the PTY hub, so it's not like a stall in North America means full steam ahead in South America.

More the Turkish of the Americas.

Turkish flies to many secondary destinations in Europe and the Middle East with B737/A320. Icelandair has only B757 and despite all the buzz here, there are many markets where Icelandair is marginal (e.g. Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal).

Turkish is a Global airline
Copa is just a regional airline ( the Americas ) they are indeed more like Iceland Air one or two fleet type and that's it but kudos for them for helping cities connect better in south and central america

If Venezuela wasn't such a train wreck, we could be talking CCS as the IST/KEF of the Americas instead of PTY. Of course, it would probably require a new or greatly expanded CCS but I think it is a little better situated geographically than PTY...

I've been waiting since 2006* for CM to start a BGI service... I am not holding my breath any longer. AV does BOG-BGI 2x week since December 2015 and seems to be doing just fine - I've flown it eight times now and only 2 of those flights were less than 50%.

CM will continue to expand, but I don't think BGI is on their radar.

*2006 was when it was announced that CM would start BGI service "soon"

Only for the East Coast of the Americas. PTY is better situated as a connecting point from the Western US & Mexico to South America. especially to points such as LIM & SCL and v.v.

Seems timed to connect with their earlier SFO flight, which has more business connections with MDZ than any other North American city I believe.

Great news! I´ve waiting for this service for years. Being able to fly to MDZ from MTY bypassing MEX, SCL or worse, ANY hub in the US is a blessing. I look forward to using this flight many times.

That has to do with the wine industry biz traffic. This is the sixth international service for MDZ, (LA to SCL & LIM, G3 to GRU, H2 to SCL and H8 to SCL).

G3 is also doing seasonal MDZ-GIG flights. I've heard it will stay year-round from next year.
