SNA closed to arrivals- Cessna 310 down

Fri Jun 30, 2017 5:33 pm

Looks like SNA is currently closed on arrivals due to Cessna 310 crashing into the southbound 405 short of the runway.

If anyone can gather the ATC audio before the crash that would be awesome

Appears that arrivals have resumed. Local news is playing ATC audio and a driver has posted video of the actual crash. Sounds like the pilot declared a MAYDAY after loss of power in right engine and was attempting right traffic to return to land.

And just for a change, the 405 is of course a mess

From flight data, looks like C310R Reg. No. N87297 (42 yrs old), no indication of an IFR Flight Plan. Took off around 9:23 am PDT KSNA Rwy20R, made immediate right turn, up to 300’/108 Kn GS, then right turn before Hwy 55 to N-NE, then speed reduction to 94 Kn GS at 300’, followed by speed reduction and altitude loss to 100’/74 Kn GS (below the clean stall speed) and then descended to impact with Interstate 405. IMO looks like potential engine failure after takeoff followed by loss of control.

Holy cow, that cell phone video is crazy. A violent crash hit the road/median hard..and with fire. I'm not sure how anyone survives that. Sure hope the occupants will be ok. Reminds me of the I-285 crash in Atlanta a few years ago. Those poor folks did not survive.

The two people on board the plane, a man and a woman said to be in their 50s and 60s, were conscious immediately after the crash. John Wayne Airport spokeswoman Deanne Thompson said they both survived the crash and have been taken to a Orange County Global Medical Center with major injuries.

“Information that we have is that their injuries were not life threatening and they were transported to hospitals,” she said.

An off-duty fire captain was there when it crashed - his car was clipped by the airplane. He said the woman was already out of the aircraft when he got to it, and they got the man out as well.

Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz *(not the off-duty captain mentioned above)* said both the pilot and the passenger were conscious when they were pulled from the aircraft. “Both of them did have good vital signs when we were transporting them to the hospital,” Kurtz said.

Holy crap. That was very intense and it seems no one was seriously hurt.

They were conscious when first-responders arrived, and transported to a hospital. The pair’s vitals were good, said Capt. Larry Kurtz, of the Orange County Fire Authority.

At 9:35 a.m., the Cessna collided with one car, with debris hitting at least three others, Fox said. No one in the cars was injured.

It looks like the aircraft stalled, there was very little forward velocity from what I could see in that video. Wow, talk about fortunate to be alive...

These type of accidents make me so sad. It didn't have to happen. As a ME instructor I would instruct my students. Fly the plane, feather the prop, and fly straight ahead until getting enough altitude to maneuver to another or same airport. There are plenty of nearby airports and there are no obstacles. Judging by the mayday calls the pilot panicked, got slow and we know the rest. It didn't need to happen.

It's a miracle they survived and were no ground injuries or fatalities.

Hello all,

I hope the people on board will be ok. Watching the video, I don't know if the initial impact with the road or running into the cement g wall was worse. Clipping a fire captains vehicle was one in a few million and have him help them is reason to thank our first responders daily.

Being it was not a stall spin event contributed greatly to a survivable accident. Looking at the video had the aircraft been higher it probably would have spun. You can see it was on the verge of breaking into spin.

Tough to see, because I only had my cell phone and the closest overpass is about a quarter mile away, but anyway:

Shame. I always thought the Cessna 310 was a cool looking airplane.

You forgot " gear up " . All kidding aside a 310 should climb on one engine especially at a light weight. People should know it takes the same basic skill to keep a light twin flying on one engine as it does an airline jet, it's not a toy.

Flying AA1119 DFW-SNA right now. My dad flew earlier and his flight was delayed. Should be an interesting approach!

I thought the tail number sounded a bit familiar, turns out I got a shot of this one a few years ago:

Hope the two onboard turn out okay.
