OS to resume NRT and CPT routes

Thu Jul 06, 2017 2:53 pm

Austrian Airlines has confirmed it will relaunch flights to Tokyo, Japan, and Cape Town, South Africa in 2018.

Beginning May 15, 2018, Austrian will offer up to 5X-weekly Vienna-Tokyo Narita services and carrier also plans a return to Cape Town, South Africa, with 2X-weekly seasonal services from Oct. 27, 2018.

The new destinations are made possible by the addition of another 777-200ER frame in spring 2018

Too bad OS can't access HND where LH has consolidated it Tokyo services and also access NH domestic hub connectivity.

They will probably do what Vietnam and Garuda Indonesia airlines have done with LGW and wait there for slots or access to HND.

OS cant access HND because Austria is not an authorized bilateral service point. Same reason why Swiss also remains NRT.

I don't see this changing until post 2020 if/when new international slots are authorized at HND, but this would require a Japanese airline desiring to operate a corresponding VIE service in return, which I don't see at the moment.

AerCap Aviation Solutions, per the linked article.

Congratulations to Austrian on their return to Japan and South Africa--while I do not believe OS has ever served Cape Town before, they have previously served JNB:

They did indeed fly VIE-JNB-CPT (as well as VIE-JNB-HRE) in the early 90s. How times have changed...

Thanks, I wasn't interested in the lessor, it actually comes from Aeromexico Manufactured in 2001.

Didn't they also got a 777-200 ER this year from Aeromexico? When are Aeromexico retiring the rest of their 777-200 fleet and might OS be interested in even more?

The NRT service will be seasonal too, offered only in the summer schedule. So we can't talk about a full comeback.

Yes OE-LPF and OS might be interested in expanding their fleet more.

So glad to see OS expanding and doing well. I've done 3 long-haul and 3 short-haul segments with them this year and found them an absolute delight. 10-across seating on their 777s is a bit tight, but good legroom and great service.

Austrian Airlines is doing pretty good right now. They axed (and are now re-introducing) NRT. Flights to PVG and HKG were also launch. Air India took over VIE from Austrian. I also believe CMB and MRU were relaunched as well.

Still, the airline has cut routes such as KTM, KUL, SIN, SYD, and MEL. Would KTM, KUL, and SIN have a chance of coming back in the future? SYD and MEL would never return.
