I have a thing for prototype aircraft. They always look smart in their creator's house liveries!

Boeing is truly the exceptional example! Each of their current commercial aircraft families sport a different color!

737 MAX 7/8/9/10 - Teal



747-8i - Orange



777-8/-9 - Red



787-8/-9/-10 - Blue



So what color could be next? At Paris, a teaser showing a '797' sketch is seen in the lineup, sporting a Steel Grey livery?

Blue is the way to go. The red on the 747 is a dog and a pathetic attempt from someone to appeal to Chinese based on what they saw in a Indiana Jones movie. Person probably is a 'cultural enlightened' liberal who does not know the difference between China and Korean

If Sunrise Orange was such a Chinese-friendly color, you'd think Boeing would have used it on all their planes as the standard house livery.

Which 747 are you talking about?

The 777X may not necessarily end up in red, remember the original 747-8 renders all sported the 787 blue livery and was only unveiled in orange shortly before 748I rollout.

I'm pretty sure it will, I remember a post on Randy's blog that talked about the Burgundy color of the aircraft being selected.

Not just the renders, Boeing has a beautiful giant 777-9X model occupying a place of pride in the center of Future of Flight Museum at the Boeing Factory in Everett, also painted in the same dark red livery. This makes me believe they will actually launch the first plane in that livery too... they seem committed.

The blue is old hat. It has been on so many planes, even customer planes. The sunrise colour scheme was a great change.

The best colour scheme is the simple white with the blue stripe down the side as worn by a number of recent new Boeing planes. It is simple, and it won't offend anyone by apparently pandering to China, Middle East, Europe, or anywhere else.

I think the dark green would also look good, especially if it were a metallic dark green. I could give it a go, I painted a B747-8 in MS Flight Sim X with the Sunrise colour scheme, I could easily do a dark green.

From an artistic POV these two colours would usually work better as accents and not as the main colour.
Yellow is even harder since bright yellow would be incredibly eye-burning (see Spirit's A320), but darker yellow would look rather drab and lacks the "depth" that dark blue, teal and red have.
I would imagine gold would be rather... Superfluous looking

I think a very dark blue or grey tinted green would look quite nice.

That's what had in mind also. Like the dark green EVA has in their new livery.

Yes I see the symbolism in an environmentally sensitive green to reflect the environmental 'sensitivities' of the 797 ... but it must be the right shade of green!
Metallic steel grey would also look awesome I predict ... and dare I say 'environmental' as well, reflecting the local weather in the area (most) Boeings are built lol...

Silver/gray/black and shades of green are all they have left. Yellow won't work, pink and purple are not suitable, gold would evoke the wrong imagery and have a psychological impact.

I'm down for green. Moving from SEA to PHX, I'm having green withdrawals. However, the red would be nice as well.

The teal hasn't appeared on a 777X rendering since before Dubai 2013, and the 777X has appeared in red ever since.

So while it may not be "set in stone", seeing the 777X in red is pretty likely at this point.

I agree completely with you. That colourscheme was awesome and the perfect shade was chosen.
I applaud Boeing for the differing colours between aircraft types - an inspired idea.
What is the most number of prototypes in the different shades that have been photographed together? I don't recall ever seeing a photo of 787, 747-8, 737MAX prototypes together, displaying the common scheme in differing colours. Such a photo would be fantastic!

I personally find the orange on the 747 and the red on the 777x very stylish and striking. There is so much blue in commercial planes as it is, why not try a different color for a change?

As for the 797, a poster's suggestion of purple would be great and the steel grey suggestion would be an interesting choice.

Steel grey or battleship grey? Are they even the same color?

Remember that the 748i actually had red at the front changing to orange at the rear. So maybe a similar scheme with blue and purple?

Did you actually just refer to the flagship of Boeing as a "red headed stepchild?" I'm in a minority, but the 747-8i especially is one of the most beautiful planes out there.

The beauty of the orange livery is jaw dropping. In my opinion, orange is the best colour and the 747 is the most beautiful aircraft. Combine them and you get something very beautiful! I also like the 737MAX livery.

Sounds a bit strange but light pink would be a great demo colour.
