Frontier Airlines has announced a significant network expansion adding 21 new cities which will increase the number of destinations served by the low-fare carrier by 30 percent and double the number of total routes. By next spring, Frontier will offer low fares to 90 percent of the U.S. population, which is expected to bring more than $1 billion dollars in savings to consumers through lower airfares. To celebrate the announcement, Frontier is offering limited time fares from $39*.

“We are proud to announce the nationwide expansion of our unique brand of Low Fares Done Right which will empower millions more people to afford to fly,” Barry Biffle, president and CEO for Frontier Airlines, said. “We project this will save our customers over a billion dollars annually on their flights. These new flights will allow us to serve even more of America and make flying a truly affordable option.”

Highlights of the announcement include the following:

Twenty-one new cities (eight on sale today), about a 30 percent increase in cities to 82 cities
Eighty-five new routes (forty-nine on sale today)
Nonstop routes nearly double by Summer of 2018 to 314
Total routes (including connections) grow to well over 1000 by Summer 2018 (more than double the current number of total routes)
Expansion of winter service to warm weather destinations with significant growth in Tampa, Miami, Orlando, Fort Myers, Fla., and Cancun, Mexico

Today Frontier has also extended its schedule with all flights on sale through April 7, 2018.

I know at least some of these are resumptions rather than completely new routes. PSP is definitely a resumption.

As F9 keeps on expanding outward it's going to be harder and harder for DL/UA/AA to pretend it doesn't exist. Some of these routes are a direct shot at the legacy carriers.

Do we know the frequencies on the routes? TPA sees a huge boost. I wonder if it'll become one of their largest stations. Are they adding new aircraft to be able to do this massive expansion?

I think the most interesting route of all is DEN-YYC! If I recall correctly, none of the US based LCC and ULCC fly directly to Canada. So that right there is huge if they do indeed launch Calgary!

I'm both amazed and confused.

The P2P is clearly to look for the weak spots where OD demand exists for an alternative carrier however for many years F9 reiterated that DEN focus was a three way battle not worth the time or money. Yet they seem to be retrenching

Nice. Buffalo is getting 5 cities. Plenty more folks from Southern Ontario will be flying to Florida out of BUF.

My guess is that many of these routes are NOT daily, so it's easier to spread the aircraft around the system.

From what's bookable so far:

Islip has

RSW- 1 daily
MIA- 2 daily
MCO- 2 daily
MSY- 4x weekly
TPA- 1 daily
PBI- 1 daily

ATL/CLT/ORD/DTW/MSP not yet bookable so I don't know what their frequencies will be. I'm assuming all except ORD will be less than daily.

I am surprised PHL has not gotten LAS yet, but F9 already has a rather extensive warm weather network from PHL so not all that surprising that there weren't any additions.

Today, July 18, the ULCC Frontier Airlines announced 8 new destinations from AUS on top of their existing 8 destinations currently served.

That's the key question, PGD is already gone and it looks like the flights have shifted back to RSW. There are undoubtedly cuts but so far that's all I have found.

Are all of these nonstop or are they counting one stop? Seems like F9 is doing a lot more one stop routings, for example MSY-SAT/AUS-SAN.

With the exception of frequencies, everything is on their site. (https://www.flyfrontier.com/news/). A lot of that MKE stuff is not listed.

No date has been set to start of service with routes with no date in parentheses.

How much capacity can CLE-MKE take? It will have 2x daily UA RJs + 2x daily WN 737s + 1x likely not daily F9 A319/320. I guess we'll find out.

Although the article missed the CLE-MIA add so I'm already taking this info with a grain of salt.

Not sure why they would drop them, CVG-SFO already has UA and DL on the route, so that probably is part of it. It had to be doing well though, I mean it is operating daily right now. So many Canadians and Western New Yorkers fly back and forth to Florida. It's just commonplace now for Ontario people to cross the border for cheaper fares and less hassle than YYZ. I'm sure the new flights will create even more customers.

I agree. I sure hope this is only step 1 in liberating transborder markets from what are generally ridiculously high fares that has seen traffic out of the likes of YEG, YOW, YWG, YHZ and others plummet since merger mania in the US. I certainly hope that this one succeeds. Frontier did serve YYC for about a year a decade ago on CR7s.

Percentage wise, with these new announcements today, I am sure that the DEN based flying will now be below 40% of the F9 system, maybe even 35%. This reduces the economic impact in the event of a major weather event.

As you say this strategy is paying off in dollars $$$ to the owners.

Looking at some random dates I pulled up on F9's web-site, MKE-MIA operating as F9 flight 1511 departs at 8:13pm and arrives 10:33pm. MIA-MKE operating as F9 flight 1508 departs 6:29am and arrives in MKE at 11:05am.

Took a quick look at the March peak and here's how it looks:
Miami daily (new)
Tampa daily (new)
Fort Myers daily (was 4/week last year)
Orlando daily (same as last year)
Las Vegas daily (same as last year)
Phoenix 4/week (same as last year)
Denver 4/week (was daily last year)

Nice year-over-year bump from 29/week 2017 to to 43/week in 2018.

Wow! Wasn't expecting Pensacola to get included in F9's expansion. I guess F9 saw the Northern Gulf Coast as a hole and decided to test the waters.

WN is actually testing weekend service DEN-PNS this summer, so it'll be interesting to see if they respond next year. Given the O&D between PNS and DEN, plus connecting flows, at least one carrier should be able to make it work at a less than daily frequency. However, I'm not sure the route can support two carriers.

I'm a little surprised on F9's re-emphasis of connections at Denver. Given the low fares inherent in the ULCC model, it could be tough to make money on connections. But maybe F9 can pull it off! How many gates does F9 have at DEN?? It doesn't seem like that many these days.

Granted a few of these routes will be tough even on an O&D basis. I think PVD-CLT will be brutal.

There are a few very odd adds. CLT-PVD will be a brutal battle for F9.

The database on the app must not be complete yet. Lots of peculiarities. Price options for PDX are greyed out; the last day with clickable price options PDX-DEN (and coincidentally SNA-DEN) is 1 Nov. (The app is buggy?) I don't think all cancelled flights have been deleted yet in the database.

Also, with only one flight a day (if that?) operating out of PDX beginning in the fall, connections to/from PDX to lots of cities are impossible unless you want to sit overnight at DIA.
