Who still flies the DHC-Dash-7?

Tue Jul 18, 2017 12:49 am

Hardly anyone talks about this amazing aircraft. I'd imagine there are some still fighting up in Canada?

Who operates the dash 7? Fleet size?

Thanks

I think there are some still in military service as well as some other branches of government work such as science and exploration. There may be a few up in Canada running freight as well.

According to Wikipedia (not a reliable source, I know) Airkenya Express still has 2 of them in their fleet. Sure there are a couple more of such small airlines in Africa that still have them, it's a good aircraft for bushflying.

There's Berjaya Air in Malaysia with a few of them. Not sure how active they still are as they now seem to only provide charter flights.
I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences.

FYI though, the formal model number is DHC-7 - the Dash-7 name comes from the spoken form.

Are Petroleum Air Services of Egypt still operating them? Saw them flying in 2012 in CAI but that's a long time ago...

I think Air Greenland might still have one active on their charter division.

Air Greenland sold the last DHC-7 in 2015

Air Kenya fly at least one of their DHC-7s on most days. I logged 5 flights in one earlier this year.

Viking Air brought back the Twin Otter...I wonder if there is any demand for the Dash 7 on bush services, especially in Canada, Alaska, Scotland, and Russia.

The DHC-7 is expensive to operate. The Dash 8-200 is smaller, but as capable on a short field, the Dash 8-300 same size and nearly as capable as the DHC-7 on a short field. Both are not as expensive to operate.

Fond memories of the prototypes passing overhead during acceptance flights, back in the 1970s.

Didn't see another for many years, until I caught sight of the Petroleum Air Services frames, shown above, whilst taxiing at CAI one year.

Absolutely not, no one is interested in flying a 4 engine turbo prop up here in the bush.

The US Army has 9 DHC-7s designated RC-7B still flying around. They have some extra sensors and do reconnaissance flights.

I saw this aircraft in Equatorial Guinea a few years ago, pretty neat with the EM loop on it.

There are still several DHC-7 at YTZ with Trans Capital. There are 6 or 7 at the airport being used for parts but a handful that still fly. Looks like they still use them for UN work around the world. We see them up on test flights from time to time after maintenance.

They just donated a DH7 to Fanshawe College's aviation program a month ago: http://globalnews.ca/news/3540123/trans ... -programs/

That one won't fly again.

What I find so amazing about he Dash-7....when landing, after touchdown, that rollout is practically nil

Any video of a landing?

I remember many years ago when an A310 Captain flying from Vancouver to Amsterdam, a passenger came up to the cockpit to ask a question. He asked why he flew on a four engined aircraft on a 20 minute flight from Victoria to Vancouver only to get on a two engined aircraft to fly 9 1/2 hours to Amsterdam.

I don't think he realized it was a portent for the future ... and a swan song for the Dash 7.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

A very nicely made private website about the Dash 7 is this: dash7.at
Made by a former Tyrolean Dash-7 captain who now flies with Austrian Airlines (albeit no more Dash-7 flying ...)

Still, I don´t know how many Dash-7 are in scheduled airline ops now.
Since Berjaya Air stopped all scheduled ops (but continues charter work) I believe only Air Kenia is left.
Flying is not inherently dangerous but it is very unforgiving in case of carelessness, incapacity or neglect.
