BA releases worst safety video ever?

Wed Jul 19, 2017 3:53 am

How did this get approved? What were they thinking!?! I was cringing at the dry humor and could barely finish the video!

Well, if you read the notes you would have noted is for Comic Relief, a major UK charity event which is comedy based... So this probably won't be the normal BA safety video used after the event.

I can't say it's the worst safety video I've ever seen, but definitely lots of British humor, which isn't to everyone's taste lol.

I personally don't find it that bad. Not as flashy as some other videos, which could be a plus. Anyways as others stated, it doesn't appear to be permanent.

Oh deary me. I see it is a 'directors cut' (6mins), but I started to cringe after 30secs...and only endured the remainder of the video to see if it got better.....it didn't. I love British comedy, and I am aware it is for 'comic relief', but....nice try!!

Not that bad, I rather liked it.

Better than some of the older NZ one - although their new one is good. VS had a shocker not that long ago - VA still have the worst in my books.

Still feel AF, QF, and VX captured their different brands the best, while being informative and entertaining

I find it pretty funny. Being part British made me enjoy it even more.

Also reminds me of a safety video from a roller coaster

That's true, it's not to everyone's taste. I know quite a few of my friends who would find it funny. But my issue with it is, the longer the video, the more people you lose. People's attention spans are not that great. There a quite a few who will tune out after a couple of minutes and the entire purpose is lost. I used to like the 80s and 90s, The FAs would do the entire safety demo every flight.

Dear fellow av geeks,

Please lighten up. At the very least it this video engages a significant portion of the traveling public that a video with a bunch of actors pretending to be flight crew would certainly not.

If it is effective in getting the message of the safety video across to the majority of the passengers on an aircraft, this is a win.

If satisfying those of us who indulge in every aspect of air travel is the objective of a safety video, I would expect that the result would certainly be a failure.

How about celebrating a corporate entity's attempt to partner with a non-profit that brings in celebrities to benefit the homeless while getting the attention of the knuckleheads who would otherwise be trying to escape in an emergency through the door that is 45 rows ahead of them, clutching their garment bag and roll-aboard.

Feel free to disagree.

I don't think it's that bad, just too long. When I compare it to the extremely bad, trying way to hard to be funny but missing the mark by a million nautical miles video on United- it's great. The best part is the emphasis on the loose change envelope initiative, which is something every airline should do!

I thought it was funny in parts. This is the "director's cut" - obviously not what they're showing on planes. My guess is the parts with the "director" were all added for this version.

Definitely not cringeworthy. At its worst, it was just "eh...."

Agree with h last 2 posts.

As an Irish person, even though it is long it grabs attention as to who was going to appear next

Will get a good chunk To watch and some of those will be people who usually ignore so it will Achieve dual purpose of delivery of a message to the audience and raising charity awareness.

Same same videos result in people just ignoring.

Anyone got any stats on %people who actually watch the video?

I like it! It may not be the funniest ever, and there are a few flat moments, but it certainly has some good laughs throughout. I think the reactions above may well betray the somewhat different senses of humour prevalent either side of the Atlantic. Anyone who has seen the film Gosford Park will remember this particularly gold line that captures the issue:

Henry Denton: You Brits really don't have a sense of humor do you?
Elsie (Head Housemaid): We do if something's funny, sir.

Was anyone else immediately transported back to Mr Bean's unfortunate exploding sick bag at the end?

Ha! Love it. Totally appeals to my sense of humour.

As mentioned, this video is titled "director's cut." According to this article, the final video won't be released until September. It's quite possible the final cut won't be quite so long.

Just for clarity you have NOT watched the new BA safety video. You have watched an extended Directors Cut/The Making of version which is not the product for release on 1 September on board.

And yes it is about promoting YOUR safety AND raising awareness of Comic Relief.

May I respectfully suggest you wait until you see the new safety video before making commentary, bad or good....

I think the point is that its different and is more likely to engage the attention of the passengers. Even if you think its bad, passengers are still likely to pay more attention.

I like it. Anything that can add some humour to what is usually a fairly boring (though important) few minutes is good news in my opinion.

I kept watching, mainly to see who else they got in to the video.

Nope. Pretty bloody good. Using famous faces, using a different format, adding 'British' humour - people will watch it, just because of these. It gets the message across much better than a lot of run-of-the-mill corporate vids

Oh boy how miserable you all are ... has it's moments of humour and I'm certain the actual version on board will be snappier than this cut. As said, best to try to understand the context (Comic Relief, BA charity, some famous UK comedy faces) and if you don't culturally get it, stick to what you do!

I can't watch it properly as I'm at work but I don't think it's as bad as everyone claims it to be, you aren't watching a comedy show so it doesn't matter if you find it funny or not, it's just a interesting way to present a safety video. Just like other airlines have their own ways (e.g. QR use a football game).

Then again, I am British. But, "British" Airways, "British" humor, deal with it or fly with someone else :).

I'm not quite sure I understand all of the negativity. Yes, quite of a bit of it did feel forced, and they could have done without the "audition" theme, but it had its funny moments. To be fair, they could have done better considering the talent they had at their disposal — some of the biggest British actors and entertainers in the business — but it wasn't a complete flop. I don't think I'd want to see it multiple times, but it's not nearly as painful as other safety videos I've seen (e.g every United safety video with Jeff Smisek on the intro).

It's also for Comic Relief so that version isn't for international consumption per se.

I can't see the final edit having Gordon Ramsay effing and blinding, bleeped out or not.

And where was Joanna Lumley?

Sir Ian McKellen
The average EU official - he has the organising ability of the Italians, the flexibility of the Germans and the modesty of the French. And that's topped up by the imagination of the Belgians, the generosity of the Dutch.

I think it is quite good actually. It is for Comic Relief so it will not be round for long (I guess...) so I hope that, when it gets replaced, it is for something similar.
Even I that am a real dud for actors and films, could recognize most (if not all) of them so the ones that can't in what planet are you on? Even the Americans - not knowing Gillian Andreson or Sir Ian McKellen???????
For the ones that do not see it as funny or well made, what about the dosh that DL used to present (I am not sure it still does since I fly other airline to the US now...) round in 2013/2014???
And the KLM one where the stewardess is in the middle of a Tile Factory???
We need these safety videos but people usually do not pay attention to them so thumbs up to the airlines that try to dish out something that is funny (with or not dry honour and sarcasm...)
