American up retrofit the A330-200s with Main Cabin Extra seats

Fri Jul 21, 2017 11:48 pm

Link/Source: https://thepointsguy.com/2017/07/aa-a33 ... t-details/

"Update 7/20/17: An AA representative clarified that the airline will be installing 50 Main Cabin Extra seats on the A332s, though two will be reserved for customers requiring special assistance."

"Over the weekend, there were big changes unveiled for American Airlines A330s. In short: Starting soon, you’ll be able to fly in a premium economy seat on one of AA’s wide-body Airbus planes."
"Over the few months while the fleet is being retrofit, these premium economy seats will be treated as Main Cabin Extra — meaning elites get to choose these seats for free."

"Effective January 15, premium economy will officially be launched on the A330s."

Will these Y+ or main cabin extra seats come with additional legroom, and maybe a bit bigger seat, and any other amenities that will come with it.
Currently DL offers a complimentary drink, and priority boarding .

Not sure what United offers.

JetBlue offers early boarding, and the ability to get to the head of the TSA security screening lane, while other
people are stuck in longer cues.

Aside from a bigger seat and legroom, not sure what else Spirit offers.

JetBlue and Spirit also don't go to Europe.

Did you read the link you posted?

Wider seat and more legroom
Better food and drink
Larger in-flight entertainment and “noise-reducing” headphones
Priority check-in, security and boarding
1.5 Elite-Qualifying Miles (EQMs) per mile flown vs. 1.0 EQM per mile flown in economy (generally)

The article states that this will be a proper W cabin like they have on the 789s and upcoming 77E retrofits, as opposed to a Y+ which is regular E with extra legroom. It's a separate class of service.

From what I can gather, until the true class is offered for sale and the whole fleet is modified, the seats will first be just Y+ seats meaning that they are status or small fee based. Once the W program is in effect and these are used internationally, it will be a separate class of service one must book and elites don't get to

Is that how others understand it?

For some reason I thought A332s weren't supposed to stick around long.

Anybody have a schedule of which tails will be retrofitted when? Being selfish as I'm flying PHL-CDG-PHL in Nov/Dec.

the LUS A330-200/300ss are already the most spacious Y cabin across the Atlantic - the forward cabin already has 33-34" seat pitch.

well, I guess no more.

Nitpick: On AA, premium economy and Main Cabin Extra are two different things. If the 777-200 retrofit is any indication, the A330-200 will have both.

Premium economy is a dedicated class of service with a better onboard product. Main Cabin Extra is a standard economy seat with 2-4 inches of additional legroom.

For being such an otherwise frugal airline, US Airways sure was generous with their seat pitch. I still love riding in their A321s with comfy, well-padded seats at 32".

Is it the same PE cabin as the 777s?

Did the aircraft receive any other upgrades or just the Premium Economy fitting? The seats in these planes lack adjustable headrests in Y. The IFE could use an update as well. While the ex2 system works fine, US didn’t install remote controls in Y, and the touch screens are horribly unresponsive.

This.

So many die-hard L-AA fans love to complain about the L-US A321 fleet for the lack of power and what not, but yet fail to realize that the A321s have the most spacious Y cabins in the sky.

It is he widest narrow body by a few usable inches. That is true. 'Most spacious' from a customer perspective is probably the C Series at this point, though.

Yes all aircraft are being installed at Paine Field.

HE is talking about legroom as well. The 321s aren’t slimline like the 319s, yet have tons of space, even in normal rows. Flown CLT to dozens of places on them (including SEA,LAX, and DEN) and they are a super comfy (although powerless) ride. The LAA 319 design doesn’t compare.

JetBlue A320s have 34" pitch in regular coach. One will also find AVOD, power, and satellite wifi. Every B6 aircraft type & config meets or beats 32" pitch in coach, in fact.

I think these were originally supposed to be retired by next summer. However, no real timelines have been announced yet as far as I'm aware. Anyone have any updated info?

IFE "updates" could mean removing the screens and forcing passengers to stream to their own devices. Be careful what you wish for.

If someone has already booked a flight in a section of the aircraft that is currently economy, but will become premium economy or main cabin extra how would that be handled? Would AA just move the seat(s) to a different part of the aircraft?

They'll most likely reassign to the most similar seat in the class of service you paid for.

"Unoffficially" the MD-80's are to be retired in 2019 rather than 2018. So perhaps they might extend the A330-300's for a bit longer. I guess it will all be clearer soon, when they announce their fleet plans for next year.

With AA deferring A350 deliveries, would that affect the longevity of the 333 fleet?
