Attn SFO Spotters: QF 744 VH-OJM final revenue flight (QF73 SYD-SFO) this Sunday, 30 July 2017

Tue Jul 25, 2017 2:38 pm

As of this Sunday (30 July) QF's 744 fleet will drop down to 10 frames with the retirement of VH-OJM. VH-OJM will operate Sunday's QF73 SYD-SFO then position to MHV as QF6013

VH-OJM has served Qantas for just under 26 years, delivered in September 1991 and named "Gosford" logging close to 120,000 flight hours and 14,000 cycles

Really sad to see the B747 fleet reducing in numbers :( It wasn't that long ago QF had a strong fleet of 36 B744's.
Farewell Gosford!

QF74 SFO-SYD is not operating on Sunday, I guess you could say its been cancelled for the 30th of July

They always tend to schedule these 1 off flights around the low demand periods hence the QF74 cancellation.

120.000 flight hours is an Impressive record. 26 uninterrrupted years of service. Wonder why OJM lasted a few years longer than the most of other 744s of the first batch QF got. Its the all-time QF flight hour record holder I´m sure.

Actually both OJM and OEB were actually due for retirement last financial year but a decision was made early last year to keep them going due to strong demand for international travel and lower fuel prices

"Gosford" is ancient. I travelled on this very 747-400 from LAX to JFK in January 2016 (having connected at LAX from the QF11 A380 flight from SYD) and I can tell you the 747 was looking particularly old and tired. The cabin was tidy but showing signs of wear. The restrooms were really old and in bad shape, particularly at the back. It was a shock to enter the cabin after having been on the relatively more modern A380 overnight. A few people sitting near us had flown on this plane from BNE that night and remarked it wasn't a great experience.

IIRC they were dropped about the time the A380's were introduced

The "City of..." part of the name was dropped when aircraft were repainted into the 2007 livery. Most of the fleet was retired in the 1984 livery and with their original "City of..." names.

Also, the late-90s deliveries were named after islands and the ERs were always just "Sydney" or "Parkes" etc. -OJA City of Canberra was the last "City of..." aircraft in the fleet until she was retired in 2014.

I suppose VH-OEB won't be too far behind her then, weren't those two the last without the interior upgrade?

VH-OEB actually had its first class refreshed a couple of months ago

https://www.ausbt.com.au/qantas-refresh ... irst-class

The first class has been refreshed as it will be used for a round the world charter in April 2018

http://australianaviation.com.au/2017/0 ... d-charter/

I would say it will be retired by the end of the 17/18 financial year, which ends on 30 June 2018

What are the maximum hours or cycles allowed on a 747-400?

I'm afraid this doesn't answer your question but a reliable source has indicated -OJM certainly earned its stripes & was 2,000hrs shy from requiring a C Check.

Thats not what I was asking for. OJM was never named "City of ...", always only "Gosford" from new, while all contemporary fleetmates were named "City of...". Ignore the 3 744s built at the end of the 90s and the ERs. Is Gosford not a city, or why was that so?

There is no where indicating QF dropped the trend of naming their B747 fleet. Even though -OJM was simply named "Gosford", the aircraft was is still referred to "City of Gosford".
