AA 192 HKG-LAX Double Diversion

Thu Aug 03, 2017 2:25 am

Looks like today's (08/02) AA 192 HKG-LAX diverted twice! Once to PVG and then subsequently to HNL where the aircraft is currently sitting.

I know flights do divert for multiple reasons, however in all of my years in the industry I think this is the first time I have heard of a single scheduled flight having to divert twice. Unfortunately at the moment I do not know the details as to why this flight diverted first to PVG then to HNL.

The HNL reroute was planned due crew duty time limits following PVG medical diversion.

Makes sense. Easier to fly replacement crew to HNL plus US bound travelers should already have correct passports/visas for deplaning in HNL vs PVG.

AA had a double diversion last year in DEN. A JFK-EGE diverted to DEN for fuel, I believe. The flight then took off to EGE but no one had looked to see that the tower had closed prior to their arrival, so it diverted back to DEN a second time. The crew timed out, and the flight had to resume after they got mandated rest.
