New NON-LCC startups

Mon Aug 07, 2017 11:29 pm

I was thinking about this. In the last 5-10 years, has there been any start-up airlines besides single market luxury airlines that was NOT based on the LCC or ULCC model?

Kind of hard to justify starting a full service carrier today. Airlines are already extremely expensive as far as start up costs go. And full service carriers many times compete on the breadth of their networks which is even harder to replicate. The exception of course is if you start a full service carrier with a narrow niche to focus on.

Going the LCC route allows you to minimize your startup cost and allows more surgical precision when it comes to finding your niche and addressing holes in the market. Unless you're willing to just stomach losses for a while to build up your airline, the LCC route makes more sense.

Also carriers have also demonstrated that they can move from a pure LCC model to a more hybrid model over time. So you can eventually make the transition later if you want.
