Anyone know which birds are these? ESPN estimates the planes cost the Patriots $10 million each. I wonder if they are close to that cost. ER frames. Also redoing configuration. "The Patriots changed the configuration of the plane so every seat is a first class seat, many of which recline entirely for players to rest."
Could this be the beginning of a trend with major sports teams, with the rising costs of charter flights?

If charter companies are charging teams ~ $4m per season, the Pats recoup that cost in 2.5 seasons...less if you factor in the rental fees the team will get when they aren't using them.

The plane acquisition cost would not be the primary factor in estimating the breakeven point on this. The fixed costs for owning 2 767s will be huge (hiring pilots, f/a's, airport costs, operating costs, fuel costs, etc). All of those costs are baked into charter operations, so the financial break even will be much longer than 2.5 years. However, the Patriots will also have a great recruiting & retention tool for players, better rested players, etc, so I'm sure those non-financial considerations were taken into account.

While I can see some advantages for such a move, the NFL season, including training camps, 4 pre-season + 16 regular season games, and a month of playoffs, mean those aircraft are going to be sitting idle for 6-7 months a year.
