Pittsburgh is also BSK384 - B738 - http://flightaware.com/live/flight/BSK384

One B738 is definitely not enough for a football team and all that comes along with them.

That makes sense. For the relatively-flew flights involved per season per team, I was surprised that all one team could come up with was Miami Air. Don't get me wrong, they are an excellent and flexible charter operator accustomed to dealing with Important People and catering to their every whim. It just seemed like Atlas and Omni had some Seriously Sizeable pax aircraft that were better fits and should find their way to at least a few of the AA-Orphaned Teams, like when World flew the Bills around on a very-nice MD11.

Also, I'm still a little perplexed as to why the Patriots would do a 125 operation when safer, more-experienced, better-trained, better-supervised pilots, f/as, and maintenance were available from ATI, Omni, and Atlas to crew and maintain their aircraft, not to mention dispatch, etc. That would be a vastly-safer arrangement, and I can only assume that arrogance, ego and know-it-all-y-ness were involved in their decision to reinvent the wheel. The 25-cent word is probably "hubris". Sometimes with folks like this, a paranoia about privacy enters into the decisions as well, and most show-biz/sports people really aren't sufficiently-knowledgable about what they're purchasing to understand that there's a reason most people do it differently; the desire to be special or private overrides good judgment. In some sense, this is exactly what killed Joan Rivers -- doing surgery at a "special" "private" surgicenter that didn't have the kind of rules, policies and safeguards that would have been present at one of the 4 or 5 World Class hospitals in her home town of NYC, where the procedure wouldn't have gone sideways, and there would have been people who could fix it if it did. It's also what killed the publisher of the Philadelphia Inquirer -- a private aviation department where the guy's beloved and trusted pilots had long-ago stopped bothering to use checklists or get top-notch recurrent training on their aircraft, so when something initially-inconsequential went wrong in a very-forgiving location, they still ended up killing everyone.

I am quite aware of Part 125 operations and have wondered why they chose the Part 125 route myself. However, how do you come to the conclusion of an this operation is substandard when it has not even started yet. I do not think the Part 125 is sustainable for no more hours than the aircraft will be used for the team and I suspect they will keep records and training to shift to 121 easily when they chose that route.

Their operation is going to be highly regulated by the insurance carrier when you are conveying a football team with a $167M salary cap plus coaches and support personnel the insurance company is going to have some pretty tall requirements one would guess for that type of financial exposure.

Okie: Any in-house operation is there to please the master. The get-there-itis for a football team has to be gargantuan. Throw in the egos of the people involved, and the pressure to get 'er done is more than you can expect non-union employees of the "charter" (if you will) to resist. Throw in brand-new people, policies and procedures, and it's going to have a safety level and safety culture far below that of an Atlas, ATI or Omni, much less a DL. There's no way around that.

And indeed given that the NBA has a deal with DL in which DL is basically the CMI operator of an NBA-owned subfleet, there's no reason to think that DL or another major wouldn't be willing to do the same for the 2 Pats planes -- especially given that they are a type widely-flown and maintained by DL. The NBA did it the right way, and put safety first. The Pats did not.

Now, is this likely to cause an accident? Accidents are extremely-rare and require a whole lot of stuff to go wrong in sequence. Which is why NASA says that looking at fatal accidents is a statistically-invalid way of judging "safety" of a carrier, because as a data point they don't reveal much. So I suppose much of this is theoretical, but for all the reasons I discuss above and in an earlier post, Part 125 is just a dumdumdumdumdum way to go from purely a safety perspective.

This whole operation reeks of ego and hubris first, everything else second.

Great point--total hubris and arrogance, frankly.

And the Pats were on another DL 752 from LWB-IAH and on their return home. Wonder when these paperweights will actually operate.

I am shocked that the Dolphins and Steelers are using Miami Air, I suspect they will be chartering two planes per trip because a 737-800 is too small for an NFL team. Just my 2 cents.

And there you go. Omni can do the Ravens in a 767-300 or even a 777. Atlas can do the Cardinals and Jags in a 767-300 or (as they just did with the Jags) one of 3 747-400 pax birds they have available for charter. It appears that for both the Cardinals and Jags recently, Atlas used the second Sonair aircraft. That's a sweet layout: 10 in FC suites, 143 in Business Class, 36 Y, but even the Y is nice. They distinguish between "business" and "premium economy" on the Houston Express, but IIRC, it's service only; the seats are the same nice huge-legroom business seats.

The players and coaches should be very happy with that airplane. It's one heck of an upgrade from an AA 767.

An American A330-300, N270AY, is currently getting on the move from PHL to CLT, where it will pick up the Panthers for the trip to Jacksonville. Callsign is AAL9710 for the ferry flight and AAL9476 from Charlotte to Jacksonville.

Green Bay used an MD-90 and 752 for GRB-IAD for the Redskins preseason game last week as well.

I have a question. Once the NFL teams get a charter plane, do they stay with that specific aircraft, or does it switch around? I was just curious to find out.

This whole operation reeks of ego and hubris first, everything else second.

wjcandee- I welcome a private conversation with you regarding your perception that CFR125 Operations are unsafe. As I have been a Director of Maintenance for many years in 125 and we hold ourselves to a 121 Standard on many different Flight and Tech Ops levels.

It's all just a disguise for hating on the Patriots, as the haters always do. Nothing more.

I have a question. Once the NFL teams get a charter plane, do they stay with that specific aircraft, or does it switch around? I was just curious to find out.

You mean once an aircraft from a carrier like DL flies them on a particular ship, do they use that same ship the whole season? Nope. They don't necessarily even use the same type of aircraft (767, 777, etc.) the whole season. The airline rotates an appropriate ship out of service on the mainline, brings it in to the pickup point, picks up the team, delivers the team that day, and puts the aircraft back in mainline service. On Sunday night, they do the same thing.
