Arrive JFK at 08:50
Immigration queue 1 hour (typically lesser), out of terminal 10:00
AirTrain to Jamaica, connect to LIRR to Penn Station according to Google Maps 52 min (I do this every time I land at JFK, and it is accurate) 11:00
For your return flight, assuming you don't have checked baggage on a day trip and already have boarding pass on mobile, arriving 90 min before flight is more than enough, so your target is to reach JFK by 21:30
So, leave Penn Station at 20:00 (LIRR->AirTrain + 30 min buffer just in case)
11:00 to 20:00 is pretty good available time to be "where YOU really want to be". You can easily cover Times Square, Grand Central, Central Park, going up to one out of Empire State/WTC/Rockefeller, Wall Street Bull, Staten Island Ferry for views of Statue of Liberty and downtown, and heck if you feel adventurous even a short trip to Intrepid Museum!

"To mark the start of a new daily service from London Gatwick to New York City, low-cost airline, Norwegian Air Shuttle is challenging European travelers to explore the Big Apple in just one day. If you should take the airline up on the challenge, you’ll be left with 14 hours to explore all the major sights in this famous East Coast city."
"The new service departs London Gatwick in the early morning, arriving into New York JFK between 8.50am to 10 am. Your return red-eye flight takes off at 11 pm, landing back into Gatwick at 11 am the following day. Norwegian describes their new schedule as being" “perfect for a weekend break.”
DY LGW-JFK early AM schedule:
Monday, Tuesday & Friday 05:50AM -->08:50AM
Thursday 06:45AM -->09:45AM
Saturday 05:35AM -->08:35AM
Sunday 07:00 -->10:00AM
Daily LGW-JFK PM Schedule 17:05 -->20:05
DY JFK-LGW AM schedule:
Daily 11:15AM -->11:15PM
Daily JFK-LGW PM Schedule 22:00 -->11:00AM
How many 787-8s and -9s has DY taken delivery of this year so far,
and how many more are to be delivered.
How many flights a day between AA and BA are offered to LHR on similar schedules
and how many from Virgin and Delta in the same market.

If you can afford to fly to NYC from the UK, you can afford one night of hotel.

For that reason for me those flights are out of the question, there's no way I can get in Gatwick that early. They're saying Europeans, but they forget that Europe is bigger than London. I live in the Netherlands, my local airport is Amsterdam. Norwegian doesn't fly Amsterdam - Gatwick, not even during the daytime let alone at night. The flights out of Gatwick are useless to me.

anrec80 wrote:Yeah - that's given Norwegian even has mobile boarding pass out of JFK. Last time I flew with them they did not. And one more - after you pay for your meal/bags it will be more than BA. I wouldn't fly them again if there is a BA ticket available for comparable amount.

You don't really do Terminal 1 or NY public transportation often, do you?

I also live in the Netherlands, about three hours away from Schiphol by public transport. Many flights there leave in the morning. Are those useless to me? No, I just travel to the airport the day before.

It will even generate ticket sales from people who look at the flights, realise it will be a huge strain with the jetlag and stuff, then extend it out using the early start and late return to maximise a short break in NY. Bottom line is, it's captured the consumer's eyeballs.
This is a positive version of Ryanair going negative withe the charge for toilet access story. It's all about eyeballs on the product, all publicity is good publicity etc. Whilst the customer is on the website they will price up flights and if it's a good fare, then book it.

Sounds like a typical UA flight after they cancel a flight out of EWR two days in a row.

Maybe you should step back and ask yourself if you have anything to offer before you type. What you describe is not typical, and you're comparing it to what is scheduled on Norwegian. United has several flights a day from Newark to London and will add extra sections when necessary to accommodate. And this thread is not about United, maybe you should speak to someone about your unhealthy obsession.

18 hours? Not good on geography? Or not good on math...
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/NAX7015
LGW-JFK avg 7 hours,
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/NAX7014
JFK-LGW avg 6 hours,
Total = 13 hours of flying
