Even though Southwest didn't announce SMF to HOU nonstop service today, Southwest might add nonstop service from HOU to SMF in the future since SMF is one of the top destinations from HOU that does not yet have nonstop service from Houston Hobby.

The two largest routes in the contiguous U.S. between two Southwest Airlines airports that are not to jetBlue focus city airports, that are not to AS's main SEA hub, and that are not served nonstop by any of the big 4 U.S. airlines (AA, DL, UA, and WN) are LAX-LGA and PHX-CVG. However, LAX already has nonstop service to NYC since AA, DL, B6, and VX all serve JFK nonstop from LAX and since UA and VX also serve JFK nonstop from LAX.

I had forgotten today was the day for WN schedule extension. What a surprise for us STL folks...SJC and SMF. Kind of surprised they didn't balance a bit with an eastern add (BDL/RIC/ORF) or something but frequencies out of STL tend to be heavier eastbound anyway. Personally I have no reason to visit SJC or SMF but glad to see STL growing for WN.

And yes, they do seem to be preempting AS a bit on the left coast.

I'm pretty sure this is the first SJC-STL since the TW days, possibly also held over after the AA/TW buyout during at least part of the AA hub days. It's been a long time. This one surprised me almost as much as SJC-MCO daily.

I am really surprised BNA-PDX hasn't happened yet. That is the one big hole that seems obvious but I guess the demand must not be there? If BNA was in E75 range, I think AS would have started it already.

AS could do a seasonal BNA-PDX from May through September on a 737. I think it is only a matter of when, not if, AS announces this route.

BNA is technically within the E75 range, but it is at the very end of it and it wouldn't be the best idea to attempt it.

Seems like entirely out of their comfort zone but ewr oak and ewr SAN will test out if southwest model works on these transcon flights with premium first class options and very low yield in economy. I seriously doubt wn will be capturing anything high yield operating once a day with all economy config.

But ewr San directly competes against as and ewr oak competes against ewr sjc offered by as. So maybe this will take a bite out of as transcon flights.

I agree with those posters disappointed to not see IND-SAN and MKE-SAN back on the schedule at this time. IND should be back in June, I would say, and hopefully permanent at that point. MKE-SAN (and MKE-SFO I guess) remain total question marks for me; the only encouragement I can find is that the route is still on the route map but then, there is currently a flt in the market...

Apparently WN decided they wanted to say they were back in the SAN-ELP market so they've added a token Sunday-only flight starting in March 2018. I of course have no idea what their future plans are in the market. Could this have something to do with what WN expects to see from AS soon?

Of course AAG is paying very close attention to this schedule release from WN. I wouldn't be surprised if we hear a batch of new route announcements from the SEA-folks very soon, and I see 3 golden opportunities for them right here in this post. Could we see AS jump on SAN-IND and get the route started before WN ever brings the 'seasonal' route back? Could AS jump into SAN-ELP with a daily EMJ -- IMO a much better suited a/c for the route -- very quickly? SAN-MKE is another great chance for AAG to beat out WN. Again, IMO, an EMJ would be the perfect airplane to start up the route.

Multiply these suggestions by all the other CA cities that WN just bumped way up -- such as SMF and SJC -- and I know it can't all be done. Nevertheless, I hope (and expect) to see AAG answer WN in a big way. And CA should be the winner when the dust settles! The battle continues, and keeps escalating...

this is indeed a massive shift of WN's focus from the northern tier of the US to the west coast.

The growth into competitive transcon markets will be particularly worth watching but WN is likely to know what they are doing and made very good decisions with these route choices.

Southwest will be down to 1 daily nonstop between DAL and MEM starting on April 9th, and Southwest really needs to add nonstop service from MEM to additional cities west of the Mississippi River, including STL, MCI, DEN, and PHX. STL and MCI no longer have any nonstop service out of MEM, and there are businesses based in both the St. Louis and Kansas City metropolitan areas that do business in Memphis along with businesses based in Greater Memphis that have a presence in both the St. Louis and Kansas City metropolitan areas. In addition, Southwest currently does not have nonstop service out of MEM to any city destination west of DAL and Southwest really needs to add nonstop service to destinations west of DAL.

In addition, Southwest could also add MEM-ATL nonstop service in order to provide easier access to the East Coast from MEM, and AirTran used to serve ATL nonstop from MEM prior to Southwest beginning service out of MEM under the Southwest brand.

WN is a very well run company. They clearly do not see the business value in adding more MEM flights or they would have done it already. MEM-ATL was an option they passed on years ago; it is unlikely they will go there now.

Further, whether coincidental or not, many of the flights in their seasonally cancelled list are to from markets where DL is strong such as in MI and MN while most of the markets they are adding are not flown by AA, DL or UA.

Not really. On the East Coast (actually a lot of it's the Midwest) it's pretty much just announcing all the winter seasonal routes coming to an end like they do every April. Obviously though the West Coast was the big beneficiary of this extension.

AS tried it but on the p.o.s. Q400. Don't forget, WN figures 40+ thru passengers on their GEG/SMF-SJC flights heading onto Southern Cal. But back to the Q400, it's akin to taking the pony express.

So Hearing this morning GK pushed a major WN Announcement that was scheduled for yesterday because of the on going Events in HOU,HRL and CRP. More schedule releases and announcements to come sometime in the next 2 weeks pending the aftermath of Harvey! Good on GK and WN for pushing what ever it is to not shead light away the traumatic events in south Texas.

I don't know. It seems like a hole from SEA because WN doesn't serve the LA area from Seattle, but the market seems very saturated. Spirit just cut LAX-SEA, and DL went from mostly 717 on the route to mostly 738 and 739 now, further saturating the market. What makes you think that the market will be served less after the VX brand is discontinued? Alaska will just be the airline selling those seats that are currently on VX. WN could consider it, but I don't know if it'd be profitable, as the market is a bloodbath right now.

So Hearing this morning GK pushed a major WN Announcement that was scheduled for yesterday because of the on going Events in HOU,HRL and CRP. More schedule releases and announcements to come sometime in the next 2 weeks pending the aftermath of Harvey! Good on GK and WN for pushing what ever it is to not shead light away the traumatic events in south Texas.

That's what I'm hearing from all different sources.
But I wouldn't go to hog wild with the information.
But conspiracy theories are running rapid!

I would be surprised if Hawaii is announced in the next 2 weeks.
But I'm gambling on 2019 myself.

Confirming yes year round for OAK-EWR (SAN as well I assume)

Yes, confirming SAN-EWR is also permanent/year-round starting next April. (I believe the only reason it isn't currently year-round, from this summer when it began, is due to the fleet reconfiguration going on at WN. It was expected to go permanent as soon as the a/c was available; this was also said of the other 'seasonal' routes that WN began from SAN this summer: GEG and IND. They apparently decided to start with EWR -- coincidentally, a route flown from SAN for almost a year now by AS -- while GEG and IND have no competition (yet) from SAN. Makes sense to me.

WN rarely does 'seasonal' from SAN. The few routes that began as seasonal here, for whatever reason, became permanent pretty quickly. Currently, in addition to IND & GEG, the only other seasonal route is apparently MKE, unless it has been dropped and will not be back. Nobody seems to know what the status of SAN-MKE really is. It was announced as permanent when it re-started in August 2016, and was supposed to be running daily into this Nov -- that is, it will have run for ~15 straight months -- but now with an abrupt stop this Labor Day and no re-start set yet. Could be another fleet-related 'temporary' suspension, or...?

They actually never officially announced it this time around, so they are just saying that it will be a new service in the Spring.

I don't think so. There's no secret with the MAX. They're visible up at Boeing, we know they start on Oct 1st, etc. It has to be delivered between now and then, so no real surprise.

Hearing that something will be at the October company event. Everything points to Hawaii.

Rumor on Twitter was that it was to be their first major rollout of the MAX aircraft. They have been pretty quiet about the MAX since they took delivery. Given that a hub is underwater and so many people are suffering its not a good time to be taking a celebratory tone.

On an unrelated note, what is with the 3x daily FLL-JAX flights. Are they just looking to pick a flight with B6? Can't imagine there is much money to be made on that route.

This is what I was getting at. First delivery of a new aircraft could have been a big announcement/event that could have happened this week. It would have lined up with something being pushed back 2 weeks (like flyguy mentioned). The CEO for WN even said today they will address in in a couple weeks. It all lines up to me.

During the summer, there has been a Sunday-only service SJC-BOI that was never announced, and didn't really get caught by anyone until a few weeks ago. Since almost no one knew about it, they are just going ahead and saying it's a new flight.
