Update: EK to upgauge DXB-IAH to Airbus A388 again

Tue Aug 15, 2017 8:13 pm

There has been internal speculation/rumor in EK at IAH that the beast will be returning. Thoughts?

So you work for EK? If not, what is your source for internal speculation?

having family in the oil industry in Houston, I can tell you that they are beginning to see an uptick and to travel more. Some J travel privileges are being restored (thank god!), so (anecdotally) perhaps the EKs of the world are seeing some travel demand returning.
When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No-one has ever collided with the sky.

I have also heard from people who work the EK flight @ IAH that it will be upgauged to an A388.

I would be curious to know if there were any way to know how many rumors on a.net come to fruition? They have to send those Whalebuses somewhere, a return to IAH might be in the cards.

How's the SEA flight doing? Wasn't it 2x 777 before the electronics ban? I wonder if they will send 1x 388 here

AI is considering IAH or DFW for its next expansion to USA, which I don't think is a good idea due to the long distance from DEL. If EK brings back 388, this should discourage AI from even thinking about it. Also with the laptop ban gone, EK may be thinking ahead.

Man, I've on this forum since it launched and if I had a dollar for every rumor that did not come to pass (especially regarding IAH), I would have many, many dollars :cheerful: :dollarsign: :dollarsign:

I've talked to people who work for EK at IAH. There's been speculation for about a week or so.

Very unlikely.

They carry a crap-ton of cargo in those 777s on that specific, both of which offer far move volume than an A380.
Add to that the increased difficulty in maneuvering an A380 at SEA.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil

Great point. Those flights give EK a very unique advantage for time sensitive cargo into the ME/Surrounding area.

From what I understand, much of that cargo is actually Boeing parts/products, so not only is it revenue for EK, but it's a savings for them as well, being the transporter of what they (and others) in the region need.

But EK now have daily 777 flight to DXB, down from double daily.

Oil industry travel will not be in business class except for high up types anytime soon.

We need to see 80$ oil forvthisvto happen and we'll see $30 oil before we see $80.

Downstream business is booming in la & Texas as a result of low oil and nat gas BI this does not generate near the travel opportunities as most of the supply base is domestic.

Net net iah international travel will not be aided by petrol in the next 5-10 years

Single 777 still gives more cargo than an A380.

Would be super surprised, the 380 needs a full premium cabin at premium yields to make this work, the IAH loads of late don't justify this, forward bookings I have no idea.

Even tho price of oil is low, it has been there long enough for it to stabilize even normalize. Houston regardless of the price, is a hub for all things oil and everything down stream from there. Hope to see the A380 back.

Great way to earn business that would otherwise go to FedEX/UPS/other cargo operators. NonStop = fastest to that region. Boeing/Suppliers keep the belly full. The 77W now and future 77X have such a valuable role in the EK fleet not only for passenger economics but also below deck cargo.

With all the cities that EK had to retrench from, it will be interesting to see what happens when a city (BOS/SEA/ORD, for example) has too much demand for one 77W but not enough for two. What's their option aside from swapping the 77W for an A380?

EK will have in a few years A350s/787s to play with in such scenarios...

The only way I see this possible is if the 77W on DXB-IAH is weight-restricted. EK 77Ws are rather dense, and the route is one of the longest 77W flights operated today. Through why can't they operate 77L on the route? Lack of equipment?

Of course it is.

No aircraft between USA and DXB is flying a MZFW. They're all somewhat "weight restricted"

Nope.

Range at MZFW for a 351T 77W is just over 5700nm... exactly the distance of DXB-BOS.

The "problem" is that it doesn't take into account the hot conditions at DXB, winds, etc. No way they could get that on the westbound for those reasons, and BOS doesn't have the runway length for them to do so on the eastbound according to ACAPS charts.

Yes, lack of equipment. They have only A388 & B77Ws

Not to mention it's usually hot and humid on the other end in Houston for most of the year as well.

You're both assuming too much:
EK often feels that a restricted 77W is still a more profitable proposition than a full 77L.

When they switched LAX from 77Ls to 77Ws, they initially restricted the 77W by 30 seats... yet that still left them with more than 50 additional seats (over a full 77L) that they could sell.

So yes, there's more 77Ws than 77Ls, but availability isn't always the reason they choose to swap them out.

Fair point... what i meant to imply was EK has more 77Ws than 77Ls on their fleet and those are ones they can deploy. But I get your reason and probably that's the reason their fleet is structured that way

That’s supposedly standing in the way of Boston getting it, notwithstanding the A380 gates there and EK’s very own (and nice) lounge.

Good to see the whale doing the IAH flight, I wonder if EK will now re start some of the cancelled flights or maybe a new destinations with the spare plane, lately EK is adding a lot of new flights, it's a big expansion going on right now.
I'd love to see ATL or DTW in the network soon.

LOL at this thread, especially the guy saying we'd see $30 oil before we got close to $80. Brent is trading over $65 today and has been slowly trending up (up $25 since the end of 2015).

We will see if this rally has legs when the US production numbers explode this summer.

Summary

Growing U.S. shale oil poses a very real threat to higher oil prices.

The rig count has reached its highest point in almost three-years.

DUCs are a climbing and major shale oil companies have boosted capex to grow production.

Activity in the Permian Basin is expanding at a significant pace.

The Permian Basin has spare productive capacity that is second only to Saudi Arabia.

I'm sure DFW will come back. surprised EK hasn't tried to capitalize on EY's exit, and I think QR is going to stick it out at DFW. while they don't codeshare with AA anymore, I'm sure they'll continue interlining since they're both oneworld. but QR is evening and EK is morning, I see room for both
