If Virgin Atlantic should ever get the A380 they could have a new Spirit of Freddie and call it 'Fat Bottomed Girl'

Nice, that man really deserves it (although there are better portrait pictures of him, this one seems to be from the early days of his career...)

Hope they use more British rock stars for their tail fins.

Doubtful.

UK has some of the loosest personality/likeness laws out there. From what I understand, the standard is "commercial exploitation," but that's a rather difficult threshold to prove, as it's so easy there to claim artistic license as a viable defense.

DY could argue that they're not getting any extra money from having him on their plane, than they would be without (which in all likelihood, is probably true); thus it's not commercial and just an artistic tribute. Doubt it could be overcome.

That's why Posh Spice kept losing in all her image/likeness related lawsuits.

Doubtful. It would be a very costly thing for Norwegian if they were to pay for the use of the portraits on their tails. They do ofcourse ask for permision to use the name and image from the family or whoever is in charge. Sometimes they get yes, sometimes no.

Nope, looks more like mid-late career Freddie to me. He had long hair and no tache in the early Queen years.

I was on the Everett plant tour at the beginning of August and the guide said of one of the numerous Norwegian 787s on the apron that Freddie Mercury was on one of the tails, I couldn't believe it and didn't ask for clarification. It is amazing that Norwegian is honoring a musical icon/legend in this way!

I think rather than pay for a sequence, they allow the CAA to assign them the registrations based on what is next available. I may be wrong.

That's why Posh Spice kept losing in all her image/likeness related lawsuits.

She tried to sue Peterborough United Football Club and lodged a complaint with the Patent office because of her worldwide fame (allegedly), because the club is known as "The Posh" and has been since 1921.

She lost that lawsuit too.

Norwegian would no doubt love to have had Elvis and also Marilyn Monroe on the tails, but that is proabably more difficult to get approved. Norwegian could perhaps do it legally, but the airline don't put anyone on the tail without approval of family or whoever runs the estate.

Very costly, that's the point, that's why there are copyright laws. They're chasing in on someone else's celebrity.

It'd be hard to bring this under Copyright law, as that concerns ownership/originality of expressions.
Easy to do with sounds, videos, and compilations of images. More difficult to do with a single image.

As such, if a country doesn't handle personality rights in its own subsection of the law, then it's easier to bring under Trademark law instead.

Jurisdiction also has to be taken into account... if that aircraft never came to the USA (as odd as that would be), there wouldn't be much of anything Elvis' estate could do about it, either way.

Is he? Not sure about that.
The hair doesn't match that, either - it was much shorter in '86.

When the tail was originally announced, they used an actual photo on the tail - this seems to actually have been the inspiration for the drawing they ended up using.

Image
http://aviationtribune.com/airlines/eur ... -fin-hero/

A bit of image searching shows this to be 1981, and it appears to be from the same photo shoot during which the Greatest Hits 1 cover was taken.
Probably the only time he had that strange fringey haircut at the front, which makes the drawing on the tail look a bit weird to me.

Well, Norwegian are also doing it with a few pretty obcure ones, in fairness.
Outside Ireland, Tom Crean for instance (also delivered in the last month or so) isn't really a much-known name.
Mercury is the first popular musician, and they're only now expanding from Norwegian/Scandinavian personalities to UK/Irish/Spanish, as they're expanding their business there.

As for permissions - I'd be curious how this works exactly. An interview with Crean's family definitely makes it sound like Norwegian talk to the estate of their "tailfin heroes" first.
Freddie is a drawing, too, while others completed at the same time (Tom Crean, for instance) are photos, just like Norwegian has used so far. So besides the right to somebody's representation, there's probably also the copyright to a specific photo to take into consideration. Rock/pop stars can be a problem in that regard because a lot of rock/pop photographers are big names in their own right and would probably ask for a hefty fee.

As far as I know Norwegian constantly rotates it's aircraft between their bases. One moment it may be Gatwick based, the next moment Copenhagen based and a few days later Rome based. Sure it'll see Barcelona some of the time, but not all the time.

Norwegian has already honored a number of musical legends although, if their genre is of no interest to you, you might not think of them that way:

Victor Borge (1909-2000) - Pianist and humorist
Ole Bull (1810-1880) - Violin virtuoso
Kirsten Flagstad (1895-1962) - Opera singer
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) - Composer
Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) - Composer
Christina Nilsson (1843-1931) - Opera Singer
Evert Taube (1890-1976) - Composer and balladeer
Geirr Tveitt (1908-1981) - Composer and pianist

As Norwegian expands into other countries we will no doubt see some more familiar names appearing on tails.

I knew that they were honoring musical icons across different genres and time periods (as they rightfully should), in addition to other key figures, but I should have clarified that I initially was not expecting Freddie Mercury to be on a Norwegian tail, but it makes sense now given they have bases throughout the U.K., nevermind the U.K.-based subsidiary itself.

I'm excited and curious to see who else they honor as Norwegian gets bigger!

Very off topic but I always wondered why Virgin Atlantic didn't name a plane with a New York City-themed registration "Lady Liberty" after the famous statue in the river...

Norwegian has already honored a number of musical legends although, if their genre is of no interest to you, you might not think of them that way:

Victor Borge (1909-2000) - Pianist and humorist
Ole Bull (1810-1880) - Violin virtuoso
Kirsten Flagstad (1895-1962) - Opera singer
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) - Composer
Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) - Composer
Christina Nilsson (1843-1931) - Opera Singer
Evert Taube (1890-1976) - Composer and balladeer
Geirr Tveitt (1908-1981) - Composer and pianist

As Norwegian expands into other countries we will no doubt see some more familiar names appearing on tails.

I knew that they were honoring musical icons across different genres and time periods (as they rightfully should), in addition to other key figures, but I should have clarified that I initially was not expecting Freddie Mercury to be on a Norwegian tail, but it makes sense now given they have bases throughout the U.K., nevermind the U.K.-based subsidiary itself.

I'm excited and curious to see who else they honor as Norwegian gets bigger!

Perhaps there's a John Lennon tail coming up ?

If Norwegians tails aren't limited to the deceased, they could add another famous Brit, Steve-O!

Doubtful. It would be a very costly thing for Norwegian if they were to pay for the use of the portraits on their tails.

Very costly, that's the point, that's why there are copyright laws. They're chasing in on someone else's celebrity.

Did Alaska pay/still pay for using Chester on their tails?

Chester? I thought that was Hillary.
