Air Canada new livery update thread

Tue Aug 22, 2017 5:43 pm

On the mainline fleet, I have only seen the new livery on B787 and A321. Does anyone know whether the A333 will be painted? Given impending retirement of the 767 fleet I wonder if they will get the new livery. Interestly, I have not seen any pictures of the new livery on 319 and 320 aircraft either.

The 319 is the first aircraft to go with the arrival of the 737 Max.

As much as the ice blue livery was a cool modern look when it came out, I like to see AC going back to their more traditional look with this new livery.

To add to that - there will only be 5 767s left by the end of next year.

Their new livery makes me sad tbh. It is not only completely unrepresentative of Canada, but also dull, lifeless and boring. And it looks out of date, being similar to their 90s livery. They didn't need to change what they had. Yet another livery #EpicFail.

Nothing has been painted for the past 3 months or so since the fleet is at max utilization for the summer season. Expect more planes to be painted once the busy season dies down.

This is what many of us are wondering. The A321s are not being retired which is why they have mostly been repainted. The A319s and A320s likely won't be because they will get retired. Ben Smith said that the 767s that aren't retiring should be operating well into the next decade so there is a chance the ones staying will be repainted, the A330s seem to be staying for now so there is a chance they do those as well. The 777s of course will be repainted. The 190s probably not. For the past couple of months they have halted repaints perhaps because of the busy season and the only new livery aircraft havering been added to the fleet are new deliveries. I'm curious to see when they start again and what they start repainting.

Ok you don't like it, but that's not exactly what we are discussing here...

The non retiring B767s are the Rouge ones though? The remaining Air Canada maxhijes are the oldest Canadian Airlines ones from 1991ish.

No, Rouge is maxed out for widebodies or maybe one more.....some B763s are staying with mainline for a few more years...

I can't wait to see the 777s. I did not like the new scheme when I saw pics of it but a dreamliner coming in to land looks amazing. The Rondelle is a nice touch on the belly and the engines. Those bandit cockpit windows are cool which can appear tinted against the late evening light and the light on the whole bird is magical. Of course I will miss the ice blue esp on the 777s.

Whenever the A330 C-GFAF gets repainted, a certain Aeroclassics 1:400 diecast model that came out months ago will cease to be a fantasy model and either be proven accurate or inaccurate. I'm not buying until I find out.

As well as a few A321 & B787 aircraft painted there are also some regional jets in the new livery eg a CRJ (C-GJZS) is in the new livery.

Maybe AC is now scheduling paint to coincide more with their maintenance schedules. Once the initial batch is done and out there to display the new branding, to save on money and time others such as the 77W will get sprayed as their checks come due off-season.

I like the new branding as it's more maintenance-friendly too. A dark belly is much less prone to staining and the toothpaste colours did tend to show up dirt easily.

The 4 CR9s in the new livey are new deliveries and the new livery E175s such as C-FRQN are exAeromexico Connect and are "new" deliveries to Sky Regional. As far as I know they haven't repainted any Express yet other than the B1900s that have been stripped of the Air Canada Express branding.

Just out of interest, how many (if any) new aircraft were delivered in ice blue livery after the new look reveal happened ?

I think there were only two in the mainline fleet and both 787-9s. There is C-FRSI delivered on 02/09/17, the day they unveiled the new livery and then there is C-FRSO delivered on 02/23/17 which I think was the last mainline aircraft delivered with it. There is also the new Jazz CRJ-900 C-FJZD which was delivered with it and is in service with it, the other four of the new CRJ-900s I think might have been delivered but repainted before entering into service.

The 5 CRJ-900s were all delivered in the blue livery back in Dec/Jan and sat in storage in YHZ. Like you said some were repainted prior to entry into service in April.

I was wondering what was going on with the B1900s. Here in YHZ i've seen them stripped of titles so far and that's it....also interesting to see that they're no longer on the AC website....are they leaving the fleet? (Sorry that this is somewhat off topic, but maybe they're not geting repainted?)

YOW-FRA and YOW/YHZ-LHR will likely account for 3 of those 5 mainline 763s until AC decides what to replace them with. The other 2 would be for backup and likely a couple of YYZ-west rotations. YOW/YHZ-YYZ would be the other routes to keep rotating the birds through the YYZ base.

However, I'd imagine there will still be more than 5 763s at mainline by the end of 2018 given the rate of international growth at AC.

Sort of kind of leaving. They still plan to purchase capacity (for now), but they will not longer be branded Air Canada Express.

As of August 1st, 8 for December 31 2017 and 5 for December 31 2018 is still the plan. We'll have to see.

Of note, the plan also has 18 MAX aircraft joining the fleet, and only 10 A319s being retired in their place.

YHZ-LHR will become a 737Max route..so no more 767 there starting in 2018.

Seems kindof surprising since I've heard they do well with cargo.

And back to the topic at hand, somewhat...I don't mind it. Saw it not too long ago as I was on one of the "new" E175s from YUL-YHZ and didn't mind it.

Bummer, would've liked to see the 767 with the new colors, but it makes sense not to paint them if they're on their way out.

Ok, but that's not what we're discussing here; however, I'll bite. Most boring in the world you say? How about China Eastern, how about Fly Jamaica, how about JAL, how about Air France, and how about the 90's Air Canada livery to name a few?

From what I heard cargo is the reason why they've switched unless they really can't wait to get rid of the ETOPS A319s or maybe move them to Rouge, but at any rate if the A319 isn't good enough for the cargo, the 737-8 is no better.

In winter yes (in fact a MAX could bring back year-round YOW-FRA service), but when demand in summer is in the mid-80s on a 763, you'd sure be leaving behind a lot of pax on a MAX...not to mention cargo, especially out of YHZ.

Also YOW-LHR has too much O&D & gov't traffic (i.e. J class demand) to warrant anything less than a 763 at any time of the year.

There's surely no way they can repaint the whole B77W/B77L/B788/B789 fleets by summer given they haven't startes yet?

It does seem to be a rather aggressive project indeed. I am referencing an AC newsletter that said all 777/787 would be repainted by summer 2018.

The refurbishment of the 777 interiors and entertainment system went extremely fast. Of course we will just have to wait and see.

Of note, the plan also has 18 MAX aircraft joining the fleet, and only 10 A319s being retired in their place.

What about the A320s?
Also, has the configuration of the 737s been finalized?

There is no public fleet plan beyond December 31, 2018. There are no A320s scheduled to leave before then. By the end of this year, the fleet will remain stable with 2 767s leaving, and 2 Max 8s coming online.

It sounds to me like it will have 30" pitch in Y then. I guess another reason to avoid them.

With the new slimline seats like those used at Westjet and on Rouge, that really isn't a problem at all. I'm 6'1" and 275 lbs.

Exactly how I feel about it too! I don't like it the first time I saw it, partly because I really like the old one. But ever since I have been more and more liking it especially after I saw it live.

The main thing I don't like about it is the orphaned rondelle on the bottom half of the fuselage. It seems so out of place instead of having it right beside AIR CANADA where's it's traditionally been when it's appeared on the fuselage.

This was the part for me that took the most getting used to, but because I've seen it enough times now I guess I've kind of accepted that that's they way it is supposed to be. I also like the larger font as a result. It looks like a throwback to the old TCA livery that had their logo in a similar place away from the titles. That old livery even had a similar mask on it.
